i really did roll around on the floor and learn bohemian rhapsody on the piano for the sake of this video. if that’s not committing to the bit, i don’t know what is
Thank you for analysing the proshot so I don't have to watch it! I've seen this musical live once and I think that's enough to last me a lifetime. I saw this musical in Denmark, where they did a run before going to London. I thought they did that because they wanted to test out the material so they could improve it before the West End premiere, but apparently not, because almost everything I hated in the Danish production from the awful costume design to the baffling script changes is still there in the proshot material. Some of the production decisions, like using a lot of projections and choreography in place of physical sets, made sense for the Danish theatre, because apparently they have very small backstage areas and simply cannot fit big set pieces anywhere. Why they decided to stick with that aesthetic in London, I have no idea. I also seem to recall they chose that Danish theatre to work on The Prince of Egypt because someone in the creative team really loved their Danish production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which I guess might explain some of the Hunchback lite vibes of this musical. You're a lot more generous than me in your final verdict though - I love The Prince of Egypt the movie and looked forward to this musical so eagerly, and I've never left a theatre so disappointed and angry in my entire life. I'd give it 3/10 on a good day. Oh well. At least it seems like the London production got rid of the Danish act 2 opener, which was an incredibly tasteless comic relief song for Aaron about being a slave. So, uh. Glad that the London and proshot audiences didn't have to suffer through that one, at least!
I get that in the theater, actors have to bellow their lines so the audience members in the backseats will hear and understand them but man! Some of the line deliveries in this filmed play, mainly those from Joe Dixon, Liam Tamne and Alexia Khadime, sound really silly with all of their "PUNCTUATED! FOR! EMPHASIS!" Also, if "For the Rest of My Life" is supposed to portray Moses as compassionate, it kind of backfires. All these people died and he's singing about how bad it is for him?
I AM aware of the musical adaptation of Hunchback and it is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! I'm SO incredibly excited for the Hunchback video in the future too!
I will never forgive them for what they did to The Plagues. They butchered the motifs and character journeys and it's all just... ugh. I wish i had it in me to make a video essay about this musical, but now i dont have tocause you nailed it!
I thought it was dreadful. I’ve seen the DVD and we turned it off after about 15 minutes because it seems so amateur and badly staged. The rewriting of the story is grotesque!
