animated movies are my personality trait :)

“in many ways, the work of a critic is easy. we risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. we thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. but the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. but there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. the world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. the new needs friends.” - ratatouille

This is one of those few movies that have actually changed my life and my entire worldview in a drastic way. Is it a masterpiece in comparison to Citizen Kane? Probably not. Is it my favorite film? Yes.

My best friend was helping me distract myself from a funeral when I Binged the last 2 seasons of HIMYM a decade ago. I loved it worts & all. I've always been a Walter Mitty fan, it spoke to me from the moment i saw the trailer & Sean Penn beckoned into me to watch the film

In terms of a sequel, the film did absolutely nothing but retread. Joy learns that everything matters to Riley, even "negative" emotions and in the case of the film, bad memories. Of course, being a Disney film (and a Disney sequel), they decided to dumb down Joy right off the bat by showing her yeeting all of Riley's bad memories, DESPITE learning in the last film that everything matters to Riley. Not the first time Disney has dumbed down characters, JAKE SKYWALKER, anyone? During the film's climax, Riley has a breakdown which probably lasted about 10 minutes for her. I mean, SO MUCH was at stake, I was on the edge of my seat 🙄. What's most laughable about Inside Out 2 is the lack of consequences towards Riley after she straight up assaulted her friend during the climax. I found it laughable how Riley wasn't banned from ever competing in school hockey. I found it even more absurd how her friend IMMEDIATELY forgave her. Forgive but not forget? That's acceptable. In fact, I would have even accepted a scene which implied possible reconciliation at the end of the film. But immediately forgive after being assaulted? Such nonsense. I guess Disney is spreading the message that when it comes to toxic people who have hurt you, you must forgive and forget. Because this means history TOTALLY ISN'T GOING TO REPEAT ITSELF. Way to teach kids, Disney 👏.

I saw this movie at a drive-in theater over ten years ago along with Walking With Dinosaurs 3D (lol) and it’s a movie I remember liking back then despite how young I was. Even despite its mixed reception, it was named one of the best movies of the year by the National Board of Review, so there were people who saw the brilliance in it even when it had a more polarizing reception. I could even see Roger Ebert praising it as a brilliant film had he been alive to see it. I will admit I haven’t seen the film since, but this video absolutely convinces me that it’s one due for a revisit. :) 14:43 Btw I see my legs in the shot 😆

I watched this movie a year and a half ago after hearing the praise it had gotten from a lot of people and it didn’t work for me as much as I had hoped. The daydreams threw me off and I found the product placement obnoxious, but I think I mostly wrote the movie off because it wasn’t what I thought it would be. Watching the clips from the movie in your video made me want to watch it again, and your discussion of the movie made me appreciate a lot of the things that had thrown me off (especially the stuff about the daydreams and how they change over the course of the movie). It was really cool to hear how this movie kind of changed your perspective and made you seek out new experiences, which is something I’ve been trying to do more recently. I’m still a fairly closed off person, but I’d like to not be, and this movie is a great testament to the importance of getting out of your comfort zone, either by literally upending your life to go on an adventure or by having a conversation with someone. I appreciate this movie more now and I found this video quite meaningful.

fantastic video & _sublime_ editing as always!! i loved hearing your perspective and i admire how personal you got talking about your experience with this underrated gem and even put me in the mood to revisit it myself.. i too relate to the titular character walter mitty’s desire for a more “interesting” life these days more than ever and need videos & films like this as the occasional reminder to savor even the little things that would be overlooked in life. films like these one that touch on themes of the human desire to live life are important and remind us that no one is completely alone in their experiences. i hope you do learn to step out of your comfort zone and get to see the world that’s waiting to be explored by inquisitive and insightful souls like yourself 🌟

I watched this movie in a theater as a teen and totally forgot about it. I think I'd done some project on the short story that inspired it some years before as a kid, and had imprinted on the story pretty hard, but I don't know why the movie didn't stick with me. I certainly didn't DISlike it. anyway, just a couple years ago now I found a song that felt so familiar and hit somewhere deep like a memory of a dream, called Lake Michigan by Rogue Wave. it was only after a few weeks of being so obsessed with it I picked up guitar again that I found out it was used in this movie, and that's why I remembered it. the plot left me but the imagery stayed and was powerful.

Awesome vid! The moment that always stuck with me was when Sean explains that he doesn’t always take pictures of his subjects. “If I like a moment, me personally, I don’t like to have the distraction of the camera. I just stay in it.” Both super relevant today with everyone feeling the need to share everything little thing they do with the world via social media, but also a reminder to me personally (and I imagine many others) to just be present in a moment both physically and mentally and not get too lost in stressful thoughts

Thank you for analysing the proshot so I don't have to watch it! I've seen this musical live once and I think that's enough to last me a lifetime. I saw this musical in Denmark, where they did a run before going to London. I thought they did that because they wanted to test out the material so they could improve it before the West End premiere, but apparently not, because almost everything I hated in the Danish production from the awful costume design to the baffling script changes is still there in the proshot material. Some of the production decisions, like using a lot of projections and choreography in place of physical sets, made sense for the Danish theatre, because apparently they have very small backstage areas and simply cannot fit big set pieces anywhere. Why they decided to stick with that aesthetic in London, I have no idea. I also seem to recall they chose that Danish theatre to work on The Prince of Egypt because someone in the creative team really loved their Danish production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which I guess might explain some of the Hunchback lite vibes of this musical. You're a lot more generous than me in your final verdict though - I love The Prince of Egypt the movie and looked forward to this musical so eagerly, and I've never left a theatre so disappointed and angry in my entire life. I'd give it 3/10 on a good day. Oh well. At least it seems like the London production got rid of the Danish act 2 opener, which was an incredibly tasteless comic relief song for Aaron about being a slave. So, uh. Glad that the London and proshot audiences didn't have to suffer through that one, at least!

I get that in the theater, actors have to bellow their lines so the audience members in the backseats will hear and understand them but man! Some of the line deliveries in this filmed play, mainly those from Joe Dixon, Liam Tamne and Alexia Khadime, sound really silly with all of their "PUNCTUATED! FOR! EMPHASIS!" Also, if "For the Rest of My Life" is supposed to portray Moses as compassionate, it kind of backfires. All these people died and he's singing about how bad it is for him?
