I had not "planned" to be personally convicted by The Chosen's portrayal of Judas. So loving, so tender, so real, so TRUE, this scene. I love how you're bringing out the lessons we can get from this simple exchange over laundry. Oh how I wish I had learned these lessons back when I was a baby Christian in college. It's taken me 44 years to learn some of these lessons, THE HARD WAY. Oh how God has had to thrash me over rocks to get me to leave some things behind. I thought I was so smart, so talented, and had such an agenda about how God ought to use my gifts and skills. As Nathanael said in his first episode, HUBRIS.

If my memory is correct Judas was telling his sister about joining Jesus, he told her not everything was about money, his sister said something like “it’s always about money with you.”

Judas had no interest in becoming a "doer" of Yeshua's words, he wanted to manage Him according to his own beliefs (he wanted Yeshua to become a doer of HIS words instead). Reminds me of satan telling Yeshua what he could give Him if He left His Divine mission and instead followed him. 😐

Judas attitude reminds of the scripture that says “These people praise me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” When he first expressed his desire to be a disciple, Jesus reminded Judas discussed the meaning of name “God be praised. “ He then emphasized that was praising with the hands then He asked him “are you willing to do hard things?”

Wow, excellent point. We best praise God by being "doers" of His Word - this is represented also by the hands. I hadn't thought of that. Anointed insight, Simon. 🔥

I love that out of everyone, Simon the Zealot is the one who's brcoming the most wise and mature one. I think him being the oldest (at 40) certainly helps him to understand Jesus's teachings, and hes alresdy shifted bis life immensely when he joined the zealots thst he already knows how to adapt to another one.

With the notes from Judas's theme, notice how it clashes with the underlying soft rising notes. These notes played earlier in the scene, but It is almost as if Judas's notes are intentionally louder and heading in a different direction.

Oh, I didn't notice that! So many great things about this scene. To me, the instrument described as the "coins" sounded like a rattlesnake's rattle or a snake's hiss--signifying that Judas is allowing the devil a foothold. I suppose it could be both coins and a snake, but there aren't any rattlesnakes native to Israel.

Did you notice Judas said “Kingdom of the Messiah” and NOT the “Kingdom of God”? It’s not about God for Judas - it’s about an earthly kingdom. Funny, physical expectations haven’t really changed all that much in 2,000 years. People still look for physical things much more than spiritual things even though Jesus made it clear to the woman at the well - spirit and truth. Love your insights, Brandon! Especially hearing Judas’ tune!

Brandon, you talked about these musical themes that keep showing up with Judas. "Leitmotif" is the term used in music (as well as literature) for themes that show up again around certain characters (generally speaking, also works for settings, etc). Richard Wagner popularized (and arguably created) Leitmotif with his popular opera, "Der Ring des Nibelungen". One of the most well known pieces is "Die Walküre" or we call it "The Ride of the Valkyries" in English. Funnily enough, this piece actually has been featured as Leitmotif in pop culture all the way from old school Loony Tunes to current Tiktoks. (And obviously inspo for LOTR, both the author and the film maker!) Anywayssss, just some useless information that I carry around in my brain that kind of relates 😂

Handcrafted soaps made from scratch require three things to become soap: oil, water and lye. It is the chemical reaction between these ingredients that turns them into soap. Most soap also has other ingredients added to provide benefits to the soap, or to color or scent it. Lye can be made from wood ashes and water, or from a salt water solution
@MsSweetlandofliberty

Yes, as a soap maker, I concur. Real soap is not detergent, which is a synthetic chemical of recent origins, harsh and with an unhealthy pH, that is, too acid.

I remember people complaining that Judas was too likable in season 3. Now in early season 4 he is definitely not likable. We can also see the cracks starting to form that will lead to his ultimate demise. I love how you point out all the times Jesus is trying to instill in Judas the right lessons, and we see how he kept missing it because he refused to see the forest through the trees. He truly loved for Judas, but he just would not…

Simon Z has come a long way. He has a much better understanding of who Jesus is and what he came to do now than he did earlier. Earlier in the show his idea of the nature of Jesus' ministry was much closer to Judas' idea of it now. But he has watched and learned. You can hear it when he speaks. You're right, that is why Jesus paired them together, hoping that Judas will learn something.

"I'm going to do it MY way, not Jesus's way." That's exactly what Cain said by offering vegetables. That's what Nimrod said, when he built the tower in Babel. That's what Constantine did when he nominally accepted Christ as the Son of God. It's called "Designer Religion." It was done frequently in the time of the prophets--slipping again and again and again and again into idolatry. Designer Religion. The Jews were familiar with this--many pagan influences caused Hellenistic Jews, and other off-shoots, and sects, like Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots and other factions. My question is, after you read Revelation 3 about the future of the churches, how can we not see that New Testament Christians are doing the very same thing! The 1,260 days between the hand-off of all political and civil power from the pagan Roman emperor to the Bishop of Rome until the Pope was arrested in 1798 by General Berthier (under orders from Napoleon) and he died there. In the meantime, the Reformation started and people started reading the Bible for themselves, the leaders had their own ideas of what the Bible taught, and the Protestant churches split--Lutherans, Wesleyans, those who followed Zwingli, Huss and others. In the Great Revival after the war of 1812, even more different doctrines and denominations splintered off. In the latter 19th century, it got worse and more convoluted. So how arrogant are we today to think we're not following God as we should, and we have our own Designer Religions that won't end well. We really need to read the Bible for ourselves and see what God is really trying to teach us--The Bible interprets itself if you read it carefully and pay attention. God needs no help from us to interpret. We just need to read the whole thing in context and not stop at one or two verses at a time. It's never done that way in the Bible.

I just noticed, that when discussing when Jesus fed the 5,000, the reason He did not charge a fee, or even a donation, was a symbolic metaphor for Jesus' offering of salvation: it is free, without cost, and be fed to being full with all you want or need, with plenty left over. I thought that even though Judas was a businessman, he was a bit skeezy; a scheister. As Simon rightly said to Judas, he was smart, but not wise. Wisdom comes only from God.

Please enlighten me on the scene where Judas was presenting to Simon the Zealot the percentage % of collection they could have in the feeding of the 5,000. He mentioned the place where the feeding of the 5,000 was held and he said "DECAPOLIS" instead of Bethsaida. Decapolis is the place where the feeding of the "4,000" was held. Do the editing department of the Chosen missed or overlooked this?

DETAIL: At the very beginning of this conversation, Judas confessed to "Z" that he sold his shares of the family business to follow Jesus and was left with nothing. A glance into his materialistic heart, considering he was the "keeper of the purse" and John's gospel tells us he used to help himself out of it. He obviously regretted his current lifestyle. So, the 30 pieces of silver would sound like "compensation" for "time wasted" with Jesus, since he didn't get what he hoped for and was now a pauper.

Really good analysis. However, the who laundry detergent ingredient list is not believable. I do historical spinning. In fact told Dallas in his very first mini Christmas show not to use knitting as knitting was not until 15th century. Weaving and a thing called sprang were to make textiles. He responded to me. Anyways, historically stale urine was used to scour textiles. Yes, old urine collected and let sitting for weeks. Concentrates the ammonia. Bleach and grease remover. Spinners used it to get oils out of yarn. Weavers used it to finish the cloth. Not saying it was the only way to clean clothes but is a very well established rudimentary cleaning solution. Lye based soaps required spent wood ash. However, maybe you can tell me what fuel was used for cooking? Isnt wood very rare in Israel? Like too rare for burning? What do you know about this topic?

Now I will probably have to re-watch the series and pay special attention to the music. LOL , yeah Judas as well as all the disciples are about to have a very rocky road ahead, as Jesus will really challenge everyone with some of the comments he will make. Very true comments, but also very hard to understand. I must say the 'thank you' by John was awesome! That was brilliantly done!

But you weren’t there 2000 years ago so how do you know what the sea of Galilee looked like?

I love your pointing out that the "coins" sound is being incorporated into Judas's theme. I think you're probably on more of the right track as far as the composer's intentions than I am, but the first thought I add when I heard that was the rattle of a snake's tail. Foreshadowing Judas's coming betrayal of Jesus influenced by the Deceiver who often appears in the Hebrew Bible as a snake/scaled dragon creature. Loved this video! Thanks, Brandon!

Judas is lazy and wants everyone else to do the things. Judas never gets it.

In my opinion, this scene was too long, almost boring.

How do you know it was coins making that sound in Judas' theme? That's genius indeed!!! At first I thought it was a rattlesnake 😅

sounds like someone tossing coins in a hand for sure, but maybe we'll get to ask the music guys someday!

The biggest thing to remember is that in the show, Jesus called all his followers to follow him except Judas. Judas asked Jesus.
