At 36 I was 300 lbs with great blood work. By 45 I was diabetic and started showing signs of heart disease. Now I'm approaching 50 and I am very careful with diet and exercise. This "doctor" is dangerous.
@marcdaniels9079

I don’t know why people think their blood work is a total picture of their health. It’s just part of it and I see so many comments on here about bloodwork in general and saying they have great or even “ perfect” blood work. It’s like saying the analysis of oil in my car engine is great and thinking that means the motor is in perfect condition.
@heatherschramm
@heatherschramm 10 месяцев назад
My morbidly obese father likes to brag about his bloodwork - which he gets a lot of because he has multiple comorbidities. He responds very well to all of the drugs that they give him so the numbers look good, BUT he keeps having other problems crop up that they then have to manage with drugs or procedures. Yah he’s not healthy and the bloodwork is not at all representative of his true life experience or the fact that he’s going to die in the next decade if not much sooner.

I used to train 18 hours a week. And I ate 2 blocks of chocolate per week, and had maybe 3 junk food meals per week. I'd hear people say, "you can't out-train a bad diet" and I'd say, "but look at me." I never had bloodwork done, so I can't comment on that, but my immune system must have been a bit f'd, because I would get sick a few times a year. Eventually I had to cut my training because of a injury. It's also very possible that the injury would have been prevented if my body didn't have so much inflammation with the shitty diet.

I like this new format of putting the study he is relying on at the bottom of the screen as he goes along. A lot of "science based" fitness personalities stray too far and don't actually show what the studies meaningfully support. This format keeps him honest and keeps confidence in what he is saying. It is a very nice touch.

After watching Layne for years it would stand out when people would say all studies prove their point then never show any. Or not study proves CICO etc, even though we no that is incorrect. Also liked in the past where people would quote a study and Layne would respond "Unfortunately for them I've read the study in question".

I’m a fat person. I’ve lost 200 pounds, so I’m significantly thinner than I was. The pro-fat folk do what they do because fat people have been attacked for ages without any compassion. I understand them, but I don’t agree with their methods. I’m fighting to lose my last hundred excess pounds. How did I get that way? It’s my addiction. My mother was an alcoholic. My father molested us. My way of survival is eating carbs. It comforts me. If people would try to understand fat people are just addicts like any other.

I had been a very healthy muscular lean my whole life until my 50s when I became fat but fit - in the “obese” column. Two years ago my Doc said my bloodwork was fine but “on the edge of pre-diabetic”. That was a huge wake up call. With exercise + calorie deficit I am now 40 lbs down with 20 left to get to my previous weight. Blood pressure down, RHR down, HRV up, bloodwork excellent. I am walking proof that losing weight = better health. TY for all you do, Layne…It is important work 👍

Im not someone who will fat shame others. I've struggled with weight myself. I've been through the cycle of losing weight, gaining it right back, giving up, then repeating the cycle. So I know how hard it is so I wouldn't shame anyone else going through that struggle. Plus it's not my place to tell anyone how they should live. But that being said lets not kid ourselves and pretend that it's not unhealthy to be overweight. There's a reason you never see elderly obese people.

@@AdamScottfit Thanks, I do! I feel so much better looking at myself, my clothes fit now (even some of my older ones that I had to give up wearing), etc. I'm aiming to lose another 40-60, we'll see how that goes. Admittedly, it is hard, I do feel hungry at times and not as energetic as I normally would, sometimes it's hard to sleep, etc. but I have been making steady progress nonetheless and I can tell that every time I yo-yo'ed in the past, it was my fault because I stress ate or was too lazy or whatever. @@AdamScottfit Yeah, and a big part of it for me was changing my perspective of myself. I hope someone else reads this and has the same realisation. The problem with this fat doc is that she identifies as a fat person. I used to do that too. But shifting my view of myself to where I saw myself as someone who wasn't truly obese or even overweight, but someone with a healthy level of fat trapped in an obese body, was a game changer. One of the things she’s actually correct about is her criticism of the scammy weight loss industry. There’s no shortage of terrible supplements, as seen on tv exercise equipment, millions of diet books, predatory gym contracts, etc. They supply misinformation and take advantage of people’s insecurity and ignorance. The large portion of the weight loss industry that’s made of of scams should be criticized.

something i hate so much is how prominent voices draw conclusions or draw causal relationships, and then say things with a LOT of authority. I feel so embarrassed to admit it but i HAVE in the past bought into misinformation regarding health/nutrition, because of some random conclusions that someone on the internet is stating. it's so easy as consumers of content to pattern match our life experiences to what's being said by a person with influence on the internet, because a lot of time we have our own life stressors and we just want *answers* to our concerns - especially something as serious as health. i think the way i thought of it was literally like, these people have such a huge following - how could they possibly be saying something that's just grossly incorrect? whether it's a popular influencer or a quirky internet conspiracy theorist i'm learning to take information with a grain of salt. i understand this woman's point about fatphobia and diet culture, and that i totally agree with. i wish people knew how to separate out sociology/emotional well being phenomena - which are COMPLETELY valid - from making extrapolations about everyone's physiology or biology. i initially felt resistant to Dr. Norton's very direct way of speaking because as a person i'm very "fluffy" emotionally and love to have self care practices that are more for my own fun/happiness and not necessarily about science or logic, but i actually feel so grateful for it, because i'm getting suuuch a better understanding of how flawed influencer/internet figure culture is for health and nutrition. in all honesty it reminds me, to a lesser degree, of religious figures in India who give crazy advice to people who are suffering from some horrible life circumstance which involves some ridiculous act to proclaim their devotion - very self serving and dogmatic, and so disconnected from the dense reality of what people have to go through.

After a couple of decades of paying very little attention to my weight, I went on a weight loss program (calorie monitoring and exercise) a few years ago, and went from 275 to 177. I stopped the monitoring / exercising as my priorties changed and some how I got back up to 260(?). On May 1 of this year, I restarted my program and I'm currently at 195 and losing at exactly the rate that my program calculated. I realize that this is anecdotal and all, but I kind of get the feeling that when I do the math and pay attention to my diet and exercise, I lose weight. But, when I'm not paying attention I gain weight. It's almost like there's some sort of mysterious, mystical, magic is at work??

I'm back to 215lbs after a year of training in the gym. Why am I heavier? Because I completely gave up on my 1600 calorie/day diet and now eat like 3000 and am focused on strength and muscle. Then the pounds melted away, and stayed away. I’m no longer on statins or bp meds. My A1C is 4.9, and my BMI is ideal. I’ve had no problems keeping the weight off since I adopted my new way of eating, and I never go to bed hungry. Healthy eating is satisfying. 😋 I never count calories either. In 2020, I ate one meal a day for about a month and a half and lost 29 pounds because I went from three meals a day to 1 meal a day and no snacking. Then I started basic resistance training for a bout two months and moved onto general strength training for about another two to three months, while eating 3 smaller meals made of whole foods and supplementing whey protein shakes daily, and I gained about 10 lbs over that time. Then over the course of two years I slowly increased the amount of food I eat daily and periodized my training to develop my speed and power in addition to my strength and I gained another 15-20 lbs, but my body fat percentage is lower than it was at the beginning of 2020. Point is: everytime my calories/day go up I have gained weight, and everytime my calories/day have gone down I lose weight.

The weight gain came after when I returned from deployment and had to quit exercising for six months due to injury. My point here is that it's not necessarily weight gain that results in bad blood markers and I haven't seen anything that shows whether metabolic syndrome causes the weight gain or vice versa. I'm thinking most people don't go in to get tested until the weight gain has already begun.

WOW this dr is sooo bad! Look I've struggled with weight but it's 100% from the intake. We are terrible at keeping a tally or total of the number of calories epically when it comes to highly palatable and high energy dense food. Not only is it hard to keep track but it's hard to not make ourselves feel better about it. There's comfort food and then there are the times where we feel we did something good so we deserve a reward. The problem with those are they are a break in the habit and you don't keep track of the extra calories and they just add up. This speaks directly to the adherence point

Oh boy I Wish there was nothing we could do - Then I'd keep my life of junk food and on-line gaming all day long. There's plenty most of us initially don't Want to do. But the math checks out. Even now at 42. Started on this hopefully my last journey down to 70 kg back in December, took the slow and steady train. Minimal to no diet fatigue, 27 kg down, 15 more to go. I miss junk food sometimes. But realized it doesn't taste as dreamy anymore last time I ordered some? I'm actully feeling a lot better eating right - physically - mentally too, since the work pays off. It's a new life, but I like my new life of intake tracking and gym pants :)

I’ve spent years running 5k every day (that’s five thousand miles btw), eating only a single small lettuce leaf each day. I am now so overweight the scale just says, “Over 9,000!!!” Finally a serious and respectable medical practitioner is telling the world my story.

You know exactly what she would say to those that keep the weight off, "They have developed an eating disorder". That is always the way fat activists put it, because to them any sort of restriction of intake is a disorder.

When I was on whole foods plant based diet, I gained 40lbs, but I'm under no illusion that I wasn't hypercaloric. I couldn't stop eating. The surprising part of that diet was that my lipid panel went completely out of control. Lipid panel control was the whole point of going on the diet.

If you are doing it for fat loss, then cut out the fats and oils, look up calorie density and Dr. Mcdougall s way of eating. Also if you were dieting b4 this, you ll definitely put on weight until the body regains all that it needs and trusts you to keep it that way, and after it gets back to losing as needed, Hope that helps you.

@@vonclare1 Thanks for the tips, but I was on the diet for 2 years, and it was low fat. I was following Dr. McDougal and Dr. Greger at the time. I've never been so hangry in all my life. I couldn't go 3 hours without stuffing my face with more food, all the while telling myself that since it's WFPB, I can't go wrong. I was willing to battle the weight gain with exercise, but the lipid panel I wasn't willing to compromise on. Trigs went from 50 to 500 mg/dL and LDL-C highest in my life. Had to abandon.

The ONLY THING that is obvious from fatdoctoruk's message is that she has had a horrible past and is struggling to cope (psychologically) with her past. Her message has NOTHING to do with helping other people. I can empathize with her and wish her luck and healing. Before you can help others, you must heal yourself.

People much rather hear there is nothing they can do about a problem and can continue down their comfort zone rather than being given a solution that requires work.Im trying to convince family members for very simple dietary/life style changes that would drastically increase their life quality. All I hear in return is "that won't work" rather than "I don't want to do this".The clear conscious so it is outside their responsibility/ability is far more important for them than the actual results. You can see it in every aspect of life, not just diet/health. Sad but true. And we are only going further and further down this mindset.

Would they be willing to try one of the diet coaching apps? You might set them up with one and just ask them to track without changing anything else about their diet or exercise habits... you know, just for fun. Maybe that could be the spark that starts them on the journey?

That woman hates herself, and is really just trying to build a “community” around herself so she can mitigate some of that self-hatred. As someone who used to be 302lbs in 2015, I can say with full confidence that being 170lbs is a much healthier weight and can be sustainable. I no longer have hypertension, I no longer have pre-diabetes, and my joints and heart operate a lot more efficiently. These ailments didn’t magically go away.

Something i think should talked about more is the link between trama and obesity. Its no wonder people cant maintain a healthy lifestyle when their perceptions and tramua prevents drags them down. Fix your mind and then you can fix your body. I personally think you need something to give you that momentum first A really interesting book i recently read which touched on this is the "the body keeps the score"

The reason the health ill-health markers don't show up in standard blood work is because the standard blood panel (by design?) leaves out most of the relevant markers that would indicate increasing metabolic derangement. Adding Insulin alone, for example, could then be compared to fasting glucose to calculate a person's HOMA-IR score which is an incredibly accurate (read: predictive) biomarker test for Insulin Resistance which is the primary underlying metabolic disease linked and at the forefront of just about all other downstream diseases including obesity, T2D, Dementia, Heart Disease, Stroke and the list goes on and on and on. Why don't doctors and insurance demand that a few extra basic markers get tested as standard? Simple. There's not drug or surgical intervention that can be sold to patients until they're well into full blown diabetes or other serious metabolic ailments. No money, no play. The simple fix to avoid this metabolic derangement doesn't cost a person anything and therefore is not advocated by the health or pharmaceutical industry; diet and exercise. Specifically avoiding highly processed (junk) foods that spike insulin leading to eventual Insulin Resistance and Hyperinsulinemia. And resistance training to build muscle which increases insulin sensitivity by providing a larger bucket to hold excess glucose and also a hungry group of cells to continue to use any excess glucose dumped into the blood from the inevitable, (seemingly) unavoidable processed food shoved in our faces at every turn.

I do think there is some validity to the 90+% failure rate for weight Loss and people are more likely to gain weight after dieting. You are basically left with the modern conundrum of knowing losing weight has amazing health benefits AND dieting has a high probability of failure leading to more weight gain, which means most people would probably be healthier if they never went on a diet. That is why there would probably be better overall health outcomes if we focused increasing activity levels, more access to healthcare to fix underlying problems and food quality (cooking skills, food deserts, price of healthy option etc.) rather than telling someone to lose weight and diet.

I understand that people over rotate on shaming fat people and ignore their complaints and overlook how ill thin people might be. But just look at the skeletal system. Extra weight can’t be good on your joints as you age. Immobility can’t be good. All of that has to complicate the inevitable things that start happening where you need a surgery for something (some of that just happens as you age).

Whether it’s the workout, the diet, or otherwise. far too many people are unwilling to get a little uncomfortable to affect a change. Instead, they cry into their Oreos about how hard everything is. They get a tiny bit hungry and act like they’re on the verge of passing out; they get a tiny bit sore from a workout and quit because they’re convinced they tore all of their muscles… 🙄
