Yikes.
I forgot to tell you to subscribe but I would like if you do that. This video took me literally over 48 total hours of editing and it still looks like this. Also that's not, like, two days of editing. That's 48 hours of sitting down and actively editing.
No AZ-1's were harmed in the making of this video.
This is usually the part where I stick a brick of text with a secret phrase at the bottom, but I've got nothin', so here's a line of text with the secret phrase at the bottom.
Which is, "Far be it". Stick that in a comment for access to the secret phrase club.

It looks like there is no variety anymore. Only 4 models out there in 2023: Yamaha Sonogenic // Alesis Vortex // Korg RK 100S // Roland AX Edge That’s it. Sad that there no more options. Thank you for your videos.

As a synth weirdo on my first gear binge I’m glad you mentioned that synthesizer sounds can slide into that “too new to be retro” grey area. It’s something I never thought about. Tbh I’m looking into midi keytar with tiny module digisynth/raspberry pi combo now. It’s not a killed dream I just can’t find a keytar synth with the right sound, and that’s okay.

@@papamagick3749 , I'm checking out your video now. On my channel, I livestream myself practicing a piece for five minutes a day for six days a week for four weeks to show the progress that is capable with even just two hours (5 min x 6 days x 4 weeks) of consistent practice. I ordered a Midiplus Stage 88 a few weeks ago. I was thinking about ordering an MS101, but I already have Retrologue II and Padshop II virtual synths with my Cubase, so I really need more a midi controller more than I need a physical synth. I still adore the MS101 though!

So fun story about that, I woke up in the middle of the night a couple weeks ago just aware that something was wrong. I was trying to fall back asleep and I hear this little tapping noise getting louder. I realized it was coming from behind my head and sat up and caught the KX-5 as it was falling. Scary, but the keytar was okay! Most of the heavier ones have backup hooks in case the main hook pops off the wall. Turns out I needed one on the KX-5 too!

I got into computer engineering because I want to design a keytar and engineer a high-end synthesizer for it. Modern synthesizers are kind of crap, you can't run something that crushes a 4GHz CPU on battery for very long and you can't get much out of a synthesizer that runs on a microcontroller. I'm interested in low-cost, low-power, extremely feature-rich synthesizers, and it looks like if I want that I'm going to need to make it myself. More keytars need built-in speakers.

Wow, someone who has more and loves these things as much as I do. And yes, there is no reason for these keyboards to have a sound engine, they should be controllers only. MIDI is the best thing ever. The heart of my setup is an Arturia Keystep Pro MIDI controller. I love that thing. I have been getting into rack mount synths and romplers. So MIDI is a must. These days if I buy a keyboard it pretty much has to have MIDI. One of the best bang for a beginner's buck is an all in one MIDI keyboard. I have an entry level Yamaha MIDI keyboard. It has like 400 sounds on it. I can just turn it on an play. Since it does MIDI I can use it as a 61 key MIDI controller. I have been eyeing the SHS-10 as my first keytar. I want an all in one so I can just pick it up and play with it. Yea the sounds aren't spectacular. But tha don't really matter that much. For messing around while watching RU-vid on my TV it's just the thing. In my living room I keep a Rado Shack all in one keyboard. It's handy to be able to play along with tutorials on RU-vid. The fact that the SHS-10 does MIDI makes it more usable. And there is a cool cheese factor to the SHS-10. I don't see myself becoming a keytar fan like you are. But I like keyboards. So I need at least one keytar in my collection. If I like the concept then I can just a keytar MIDI controller as my second keytar. Thanks for the video. You just earned yourself a new subscriber.

Actually, I plan to buy myself the Vortex MIDI keytar, because sometimes when working in a DAW, having a full-size synthesizer on my lap isn't the most comfortable way of producing music and it hurts my legs, if the synth sits on them for too long. So having a keytar like Vortex will be great and having a Bluetooth-MIDI capability on it means, that I won't need to even plug it into the computer to play all those VST instruments in the DAW.

Thank you for the insights in this video (and in some others that I have subsequently watched). :-) I do enjoy the way that you "play yourself", and I (too) welcome advocates of MIDI. Me, I'm currently balancing my MIDI (vector music) gear with traditional (bitmap music) gear. And making much of both of it available wirelessly (Bluetooth and otherwise). Trying to resume making music after maybe 15 years. No, I'm not fancying a keytar in my near future. The expressive side of my music is likely to be dominated by wind controllers, from the "humble" re.corder (by Artinoise) up to the AE-30 (by Roland), with the WX5/VL-70m couple (by Yamaha) as my long-time friend. (All these are here on RU-vid, with real musicians.) (One of my two "life works" is re-recording my 1990 work-in-progress. It has survived as both poor audio recordings and as MIDI files that pre-date General MIDI files.)

Thanks for the insight... this clip probably saved me money on experimenting with these instruments.... I Was looking at keytar as an option for a OMB (one man band) to play one key to get a chord out of or sequence of programed chords... but dont know if they make one like that since what was stated that most are not polyphonic... the other otion was to trigger a sampler with sampled chords on it but midi note values would probably not correspond to the root note of the chord... Cheap keyboard sythns have fingered chrods but those chords can change at the slightest touch if you try to ad a sharp or flat.. it is really something that I believe was never perfected... an accordion has fingered chords on the back bass buttons that are fixed and that is more or less what I am looking for in a keyboard... the search from how to get there from here continues. o for the sampler issue....I might just take the sampler itself that I am trying to controll and mount it to a stand.. in order to touch its pads while I am playing to trigger the stored samples.. but sttill havenet found a way without a computer to trigger a program chord that is in the keys of a synth or keyboard or keytar... if any one knows of a keytar or keyboard that can do this which is portable I would apprecieate some input...
@СергейПопов-д6ы
Samples with accords. I have tried many options... but if you need mobility, then recording ready-made chords into samples for your songs is the easiest option... I connected several synthesizers in a chain and controlled one key and a pitch band... I tuned +-12 tone on one, and +-7 or 5 on the other ... and wow, it was an interesting and unique experience... especially when one goes +12, and the second at the same time -7... but not everyone allows you to do this... Roland AX-09 is able to use cases, but it will still have to be controlled by a computer... or alternatively korg wavestate or its progenitor korg microsampler

I enjoy your channel, even though I don't have a keytar and don't plan to splurge for one anytime soon. I *do* have a Yamaha PSS-50 portable keyboard (37 mini keys.) I wish it had come with buttons for affixing a strap, at which point it could be an honorary keytar. I may yet figure out how to do an aftermarket modification to put a strap on it. I also possess a melodica, which is basically the keytar of wind instruments...

Often when questioning peoples decisions we start with "what were they thinking when..." etc. The point I like to make about the less desirable people of the human race is that they CAN'T think. These people are the ones that, in a Keytar relevant context, cannot understand the purpose of a MIDI controller because of its lack of inbuilt sounds. They don't want, but NEED a sound to happen when they turn it on and press a key because thinking any more than this is beyond them. This is of course despite a MIDI controller's positive attributes, for example: Being broadly less expensive (often including the sound module whether it be another synth or running on the laptop and phone you undoubtedly already own), more expandable in sound choice and play style, greater choice in size and shape of keytar, lighter keytar, more control capabilities, greater customisability of said controls, easier and cheaper to replace without losing your signature sounds because they're on a different device... BUT KEY DON'T MAKE SOUND?!!1

I go through phases. Currently it's been the Yamaha Shs-200 because the overall size plus the wide key range really helps when I'm trying to come up with new melodies, and the speaker makes it fast to pick up and put down. When I'm doing new, idk what to call it, textures(?), like how different layers of sound can work, the rk-100s is fun, but it's very annoying to switch patches on. For doing live looping, I'm pretty fond of the kx-5 plugged into the dx100 because the kx-5 is really smooth feeling to play and the dx100 sounds really good. And then if I'm traveling, it's usually either the rock band controller or shs-300 plugged into garageband for iOS.

But that being said, I have a vortex 2 because the sad realities of price and flexibility. Edit fun fact: If you're all-in-one keytar sounds have gone out of style, use this one tip (doctors hate this!): put them through delay and reverb - and then they'll like nothing, which is in right now.

If it doesn't have a neck, it's not a keytar. Also as someone who's been making noises via ipod/iphone midi for far too long, I'm sick of midi. I'm sick of cables and phones and extra bullshit. I just want a box that makes noises. I've got a bunch of controllers that barely get used because I'm so over cables & camera adapters. I hardly use anything other than a Korg Nanokey Studio just because of the bluetooth connection. I get that midi has a shitload of options, but between the dozen or so beatmakers, DAWs & softsynths on my phone, I tend to get lost in finding tones.

Wow the Keytar collection has really grown since 2017 first video!!!!!! So much synth/midi controller/all in 1 goodness. I play drums and use electronic kits, however I’m really interested in midi controllers, synths and secretly wish I knew how to play keyboard/keytar.

I arrive here having had a vision of a keytar thou needest. 'tis the Yamaha CS01. Seek and ye shall find. I also had a vision of another keytar that thou needest not: the Behringer UMA25S, which hath a hellspawned key action that verily is shallower than a flea's fundamental orifice. Spurn this infernal device. That said, I quite like converting other 25-key MIDI controllers into mini-keytars; it's all down to whether the pitch and mod wheels are top left rather than bottom left. You will know why. As a pastime it is entirely without purpose, hence liberating.

As always, thanks for your experience and insight. Also, I'm concerned about the water damage and potential mold. Mold can affect various aspects of health/mood. If you'd like mold testing (from a urine sample), I can order it for you at the same price for which I get it.

Those urin testing outfits are a scam. If there is an issue go to an actual doctor. If they think a test is warranted; they will order one. But yes mold is bad for your health and should be taken care of.

@@jennoscura2381, it's interesting that you commented about the mold test, as yesterday, I got back results from the urine mold test I ordered. After years of brain fog, fatigue, excessive need for water, etc., the test showed an elevation (and a high elevation) in just one of the markers. The mold is probably colonized in my sinuses. I now have direction for treating it. Not all most tests are the same. The one I used is from Great Plains Laboratory and they're rather reputable. Do you want me to keep you updated about how the treatment goes?

@@DavidGeliebter My issue is people with vague symptoms getting a bunch of tests they may not need. If I have something going on I let my doctor know. If they think a test is in order; they will order one. Woo peddlers like to on about "toxins" or candida as the cause of people's problems. Folks then spend a bunch of money on tests for something that may not even be an issue. If a medical doctor won't order a test; it's not necessary.

@@jennoscura2381, I hear you about people suspecting that everyone with any health issue has a Candida overgrowth. I was the same way for a while thinking that everyone should be tested for thyroid antibodies. But I disagree that if a medical doctor won't order a test, it's not necessary. My friend's physician had just been testing her TSH (for thyroid) and it was coming back normal. I asked her to urge her physician to run a complete thyroid panel. The physician did it and my friend's TG antibodies came back at 4,705 IU/mL. Everyone considers 61 IU/mL high. This led to an ultrasound showing nodules on an enlarged thyroid and confirmed Hashimoto's disease. So for my friend, the thyroid panel was a necessary test even though her physician thought it was unnecessary. Another friend had gastrointestinal issues for years. Physicians ran several tests, but it wasn't until we spoke about it that she got a SIBO breath test and a positive test result for SIBO. Again for this friend, the SIBO breath test was a necessary test even though all her past physicians did not think that it was necessary. For myself, I went to a physician and was told that I was healthy. I had brain fog, fatigue, and more, but all the "necessary" tests came back normal. I suspected mold and did the urine test. It came back highly positive for verrucarin A. For myself, , the mold urine test was a necessary test even though my physician thought I was healthy. I know other stories too, but the point is that while many physicians are well-intentioned, they are doing their patients a disservice by ordering only basic testing.

@@DavidGeliebter Yea sometimes you need to get a second (or third) opinion to figure out whats going on. That's why I am glad my doctor has had no problems referring me to specialists. There is only so much a primary care physician can do.

Great to see a followup to the video that made me embrace music as a hobby! :D Very well explained, I could have really used the breakdown of the three main categories when I first started out. An addition to you discussion about synth keytars, is that they often have an external sound editing app (at least the AX-edge and rk100s/2 do), so that you can program their patches with the same detail as a software synth - but is obviously not as convenient as just getting a dedicated regular hardware synthesizer with all physical controls(Like the MS-1).

If you're not afraid of MIDI, Apple MainStage app is dead cheap, has all the Logic sounds, and is built for live performance.
