As an occasional thing this 'behind the scenes' version does work. I'm not sure it'll be popular if you do it every video due to the amount of 'dead time' rather than your normally much more condensed format, but it was really good seeing the interactions between you and your staff.

I really appreciate seeing the entire overhaul on something like this, start to finish. You could trim some of the process of unsticking the old bearings, but I can also just scrub forward in the video if I don't want to watch it.

I have always used a Proto wheel puller to remove blower bearings, quick and simple. The arms bolt together and the reach is about 18” to 20”. No cutting, no heat. I’ve had mine for 45 yrs.

Coming back to this after a "Simple sink repair" turned into replacing the whole sink XD. The strainer baskets have nuts holding them on, and all the teeth sheared off, so there was no way to remove them. Entire reason for the repair in the first place is that the original installed didn't line up the pipes correctly, and there was weird strain on the couplers. One sheared in half and the drain didn't hold water any more. Rather than try to line the pipes up, which literally just took loosening the couplers and wiggling them a bit, *They wrapped coat hangers around the PVC to try and compress it*

The benefit of aluminum is that it does not produce sparks when high speed aluminum hits aluminum. So fan manufacturers use aluminum in grease rated fans as a safety feature whereby if there ever is contact between the rotating fan and the stationary body it will not spark and ignite the grease on fire.

You can also notch the bearing race with the grinder and then strike the cut with a cold chisel to break it open as they are so hard and will be prone to crack if forces are right. Pretty hazardous from the sharp flying pieces of steel aspect, but it can open the bearing race without cutting all the way into the shaft.

Good job chris I use to have too change pillow block motor bearings all the time when I work as an industrial maintenance man for 10 years. We had to freeze bearings sometimes to remove them

Not that I don’t find myself glued to your other videos; I really enjoyed the high detail format, it flows well. Spending 15 years in the field (electrical) I eventually “progressed” to desk jockey I can’t tell you how much I miss working in the field. They say working in the office is safer and easier on the body but having done it now for 5+ years I don’t agree. I think it’s worse for the mind, body, and soul.

Speaking of fan wheels, we were in need of new motors for our industrial pressure washers that we were upgrading from gas, and found two NOS Century motors, and had to have the aluminum fans removed. They'll never be the same. These were 7.5 HP, 440 vac. Since these motors sat outside in the weather, they needed new bearings, but they were a lot less than off the shelf, and the boss was happy with the outcome.

Slight correction. It is not the sentrifugal force you are using to get it of. It is the mass of the wheel and thusly momentum you are using. I have used the same teqnuicke to snug up wheels on cars (yes I always go over them after the car is on the ground) but to get it sort of tight, it works. And to loosen too if it is not too tight.

This is also why impact guns are so effective on wheels, even if it is off the ground. You hit it to loosen, it is so fast that the inertia of the wheel keeps it still enough to loosen. Or tighten.

I think the term you're looking for is "angular momentum". Something heavy wants to keep running at the same speed (full stop is also a "speed"). That applies to straight line motion as well as turning motion.

Chris good job, wow! we used to get those fans back in the old days of the late 1990s for $ 1,500.00 - $2,500.00, I almost spit my tea out my nose laughing so hard when you said they cost $20K I was like WTF. lol Maybe you in the wrong business and need to start thinking about building commercial rooftop fans? lol there can't be more than $2k in parts and sheet metal that is a heck of a big profit margin. :)

There's an easier way to remove that bottom bearing or other bearings. Remove the bearing shield. Break the bearing race by punching, drilling, or prying. You can remove the bearings which will allow you to remove the bearing flange and outer race. You can then remove the inner race in whichever convenient method that your prefer. I have used this method many times. Hmmm, you might want to invest in a set of pulley/sheave pullers. Perhaps some laser pulley alignment too. Though old school methods are always good to learn. Just rewatched the video. On the taperlock, there will be two other holes, threaded. These are used to disengage the taperlock from the pulley. Just re-rewatched that section. Looks like there are no holes. My mistake.

Funny how those bearings last like that. They're not meant to be in that "thrust" position. They should by all rights, just come apart as gravity pulls them. Dead blow hammers usually have lead shot in them not sand. I feel for ya Chris with these guys that have little knowledge about what needs to happen on things like this. I'd be ahead of you, on a simple job like this. Another nice vid though.

I work with a lot of bearing housing before and the way we used to take the inner bearing out when it was hard to removed. We used a small can of 134a and spray the shaft until it was frozen and that will make it really easy to remove any old bearings .

Sorry for posting multiples,just throwing some things out there.Another tool that works pretty good is an SDR drill on hammer,use point or flat chisel bits to drive bearin to free it up,auto mechanice use aor chisels we rarely have aor so its the next best thing!

use a small sledge hammer and a long chisel loosen one re install then do the other.drill hole into shaft and sink allen screw so the shaft does not spin.thanks for sharing.

With a small oxy torch you can cut the outer bearing race easily. After this heat the inner race a little red hot and apply one smash with a chisel on the dot. Job done in minutes.😁

Since the whole bearing assembly is removed I would have considered using a chisel to crack the bearing house and bearing races. After all those items are relatively brittle.

@@ehsnils I've done it that way as well. I've punched all the ball bearings out of the race and was left with just pulling the bearing housing off. Many ways to get stubborn bearings off a shaft. Some days one way will work, when others it wont. Hell ive even used our pipe freeze kit to shrink them to get the new one on too.

another tip I have used is cut almost to the shaft..then take a chisel and hammer it in to the kerf and most times the inner bearing race will crack and open enough to come off easy

On that heating part. As long as the 2 materials are different you can heat them both. One will expand slower than the other. Ideally. The bearing in this case. You probably could’ve hit the whole area as hard as you wanted with the torch cause you arent gonna heat that shaft up enough to expand as much as the bearing.

Chris, you have A LOT more experience than I, so this is an honest question. Shouldn’t the adjustable pulley be as close to the motor body as possible to cause less wear on the motor bearings? I have been taught that having it out so far acts like a lever against the bearings….great video as always!

You are correct, but proper belt tension and alignment of the pulley will negate most of the potential damage. Technically speaking an adjustable pulley should only be used to get the proper airflow setting, then a fixed pulley would be installed.....this is mostly not the way it goes. Dont get caught up in all the technicalities. Do your best and let the chips fall where they may. By the book is great theory....but seldom reality.

@89DHVAC ideally yes the motor pulley should be closer but as i said in the video I had to move the pulley up in order for the set screw to hit the bottom of the key, the notch for the key did not go low enough on this particular motor

As far as I know, dead-blow hammer is usually made of using iron pellets (like shotgun shot), not the sand. Still, Some hammers are made using sand, but they are rare. Cheap ones made with steel shots, as far as I know.
