Hey everybody and IGP! Ryan here, the solo developer of the game. As always, It's an honor that you play my game and I am always looking forward to your video! Thank you so much, you're amazing as always. I just love the style of all your videos and I really really appreciate it that I am included in that. There's no way you did this in one sitting without walking away or taking a break. This is terrifying but next level.

So at the end... ...the recording mentions "the ones that stand there and watch, and observe" as opposed to attacking like the red enemies. I'm guessing that whenever your scanner revealed the shadow of a person but an actual red enemy never appeared, that's what was happening. There was a "watcher" standing there, watching you. Creepy.

Okay so the visions of the house Francesca had were just the watchers convincing her to get home and spread the virus? Or perhaps a vision of what would happen when she gets home, trying to lock a creature in a room.

Dude Steelkrill is an absolute god at making horror games, I hope he keeps making more they're so good

This game’s atmosphere is freaking terrifying, I love it. ❤ This developer makes some pretty amazing games, I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s next after this.

A 1 hour video from the legend himself?! What a good day it is

So IGP's surprise at being able to see previously scanned areas through walls made me think people might like an explanation about this technology. It's pretty common for LiDAR games to use the metaphor "painting the environment" to describe gameplay, but your character isn't physically marking anything. LiDAR stands for Light Detection And Ranging. The scanner shoots a laser and measures how long it takes to reflect back. Because light has a fixed speed, how long it takes to come back tells you exactly how far away the point it hit was. Shoot the laser at a bunch of different points and you can build a point cloud! Each point has an x, y and z value (basically forwards/backwards, left/right and up/down relative to a fixed point). If you want a DEM (digital elevation model) of the countryside, you mount a LiDAR scanner underneath a plane, fly it at back and forth while scanning the ground, and each point it captures has latitude, longitude and height above sea level recorded. If you want a 3D model of a room, you use a handheld scanner (such as a newer iphone) and the device's accelerometer keeps track of how you're moving it, so that each point's xyz values are consistent relative to each other. Then you feed this point cloud into visualisation software, which maps out all those points according to their xyz values, building your 3D model. The character in the game is basically walking around in a VR headset displaying that 3D model in realtime! If the in-game scanner can't see part of a wall, like when IGP hasn't gone fully around the corner, then it doesn't have any points recorded to block his view of a different part of the 3D model once he moves further. We can intuitively tell there's probably a solid wall there, but the visualisation software isn't trying to look real, it's just showing us all the points. Something nifty about this game is that it makes in-game sense that Francesca can see the point cloud generated by the handheld scanner - she's already wearing a spacesuit, and given the specialised mission they were on, of course their helmets would have the necessary VR tech already built in. I'm not sure what kind of onboard processing power you'd need for a handheld scanner and VR headset to be able to map the point cloud instantaneously, but given the scanning isn't particularly dense this honestly seems pretty realistic. The dimension where lasers work but flashlights don't notwithstanding 😉

I imagine the game’s basic theme is sensory deprivation, or rather, the extensive limitation of the visual sense, adds to the tension. The fact that the only manner to obtain some form of visual coherence is through the lidar range finder, it definitely made me feel so uncomfortable, anticipating a visual anomaly that may or may not happen. And the the use of sound definitely terrified me, tbh I find it to be eerily comforting, and its absence just makes one’s heart sink. Absolutely loved it. A film with the same concept would be very badass.

I've said it before, and in this video you can BARELY hear it, but adding the echo to your voice adds so much immersion

I'm always amazed at how the Indy developers create the most intense games with the most unique mechanics. Honestly these people deserve all the credit and really should gain so much more recognition for the amazing games they create and I'm so glad channels like this bring the spotlight they truly earn

kept asking why we put structures and statues on that planet, and never once considered that it's an alien planet they recently discovered. They didn't build that stuff, something else did. How are you going to build in an environment you can't even see light in?

I hope you continue your Sons of the forest series, the open world/ semi nonlinear flow of the game truly made your lets play unique and enjoyable, reminding me of your OG subnautica videos.

sorry IGP, don't think I can finish this one. You have a fear of the deep ocean, I have one of not being able to see my surroundings. Being stuck in a pitch-black environment with only a tool for a piss-poor replication of sight, while a hostile enemy is lurking around, is too much. I just can't.

Trenches was an amazing game. Skilly live and an IGP video. Utter heaven.

Love the gameplay truly but on god I can feel just pure unadulterated TERROR during the hiding portions and I swear I almost had a mini heart attack at some points! 10/10 would watch again!

Oh man as soon as I heard the male voice at the end I was like "Professor Bryan?" At first I thought he was still alive and left behind but when he said don't leave I realised what it actually was. That was awesome, the lidar navigation is such a cool concept just giving you stationary images that you have to keep on refreshing when stuff is moving. Really fantastic game.

The moment I saw that this uses Mic, and read how you described it with sheer terror in the title, I instantly knew it was steelkrill. Hats off for being able to get your name associated with top notice Mic utilizing horror. And MY GOODNESS, LIDAR!?!? INSTANTLY BETTER; LIDAR HORROR HAS TO GET BIGGER!

How cool would it be to have a Horror game with no sound!!! For example the main character have hearing aids to hear and somehow his hearing aids...and it can go anyway...haunted house, murderer trying to kill him, and so on and so forth the list goes on!!!! All I'm saying is it would be interesting to play a game with no sound!!!

Depends on how loose the screw is, if its really in there, no you can't use your finger. But if it's loose enough, which surprisingly it doesn't need to be as loose as you might expect, personally i've uncrewed many screws with my fingers.

Yo there are like 2 different versions of this video when I watch on my phone is it 1 hour 7 mins and 42 seconds long has no intro in which you explain the game and the audio lines up with the video But if I were to cast it to my TV then it is 1 hour 8 minutes and 35 seconds long, adds the intro in which you explain the game, and the audio is substantially lagging behind the video, about a 1 minute and a half behind.

The gameplay of this with the Lidar scanner is very similar to an older game called Scanner Somber, it's been a while but I'd recommend it for more of this sort of action.

50:10 that is easy to explain on how that works, you just apply collide on objects and then put the opacity at 0%, and when you apply some kind of particles to it (on this case, that light emitter) they just collide to it but you can still see through holes, got it? is not that hard :)

I forget that IGP has kids sometimes so when he says something like "I play (Game he plays with his kids) with my kids" I always have to back track a little lol.

I bought alot of games of steam from watching igp and I almost never play them I scare easy and I live alone in an apt with no neighbours I don't know why but it's been almost a year now no one has taken the units beside mine and its quiet as F at night all you hear are dogs barking at 2am then stop at 3am
