Today, about 56 percent of the world’s population is urban; by 2050, it will be nearly 70 percent.
Cities have the potential to be really efficient hubs of humanity that can support sustainable living; however, many of them haven’t been designed that way. So urban planners around the world are trying to create "green" or "smart" cities. But how green and smart are these urban innovations? And do they result in a greener city for everyone, or just a chosen few?
In the fifth episode of All Hail The Planet - a series delving into the social, economic and political forces undermining meaningful global action on climate change - Ali Rae speaks with the director of the African Centre for Cities, Edgar Pieterse; the director of the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice & Sustainability, Isabelle Anguelovski; and a professor of urban planning at the University of Lagos, Taibat Lawanson.

Especially in my country. Loads of these green luxury upper middle class projects have been coming up yet the portion of the population that can afford these is so small and their demand already satisfied that I'm left believing completely that these projects are essentially a bubble. Good episode as usual...

Special and informative series. Massive respect to the whole team for pointing out the hypocrisies of the elites.

Great video series which really gets a level deeper than most reports about sustainable developments!!! The funny thing for me is, that mega cities try to replicate the day-to-day live of small cities in Europe or North America: these are actually pretty good in the availability of public goods, medical services, education, local connectivity, 15 to 30 minute distances and have not too much of gentrification as big investors are not too much interested and push up housing costs. Maybe the answer simply is not to go too big and counter the effects of power and capital accumulation in these hubs.

the section on greening and gentrification is interesting. wonder about the long term.. for example the Chinese highrise that is experiencing mosquito infestation because the plants on the building floors are causing water to pool allowing for mosquitoes to breed...

Waited to see more about the great need for well-planned and functioning mass transit. Seems that is a central problem growing cities will need to provide if they hope to contain emissions. Maybe in the next video.

Wealthy people. Climate Change. Social Media. Projects require funding. Reform requires study and initiative. Civilization requires action.

It seems that all cities, no mater how "green", still rely on the capitalist consumer model. All actual production of food and energy products have to be imported at a high energy cost. I used to live in a mega city and now live in the country. In the city I always worked in economic industries/legal etc while in the country I have always been a truck driver. The two worlds simply don't connect in terms of focus, needs and growth models.

Blaming management consultants is all fine and good but they only do work they are paid for, so, who really benefits from the smart city drive across Africa? At the end of the day it all comes down to income inequality, first ensure all citizens who seek it can earn a living wage and have decent housing and infrastructure then we can talk about an equitable green transition.

How can we take anything Al Jazeera says about Carbon and Climate change seriously? They are a state funded media - who said state's only export to the world is oil and GAS. Rich Hypocrisy I would say!

With increased interest in urban living; there is an investment opportunity in the infrastructure reform. Big Farms and Infrastructure Reform. A way to improve.
