How much of the efficiency difference is due to tire type (LRR all-season vs summer UHP) rather than wheel size?

Quite a bit, we imagine. We are just comparing the factory wheel / tire package not separating out the tire from the wheel

Got my Lucid with 19s and can't understand why anyone thinks bigger wheels and tires look better? I've seen cars side by side with different tires and struggle to see any relevant differences. I dropped my MX90D to squared 19s and everything improved (ride, range, tire life etc). My EQS has 20" and I'm glad it didn't come with 21s or 22s. Thanks for the reviews, but I'll take range and ride comfort every time.

it's less that the 21 inches look better because it's bigger and more because the 21s fills in the gap way better which makes it look planted and less like its tiptoeing.

Personally I think the 19s look fine and the difference in range/efficiency and ride quality is more important to me. I’m not a big wheel fan because it mainly just leads to more expensive tire replacement, more likely to damage a wheel/tire if you hit a pot hole, worse ride quality, worse efficiency, etc. I think the sweet spot here would be sticking with a 19” wheel but maybe going for something a little more stylish, or even making the aero wheels with a removable aero cover (like Tesla).

Main disadvantage of the 19s is traction when pushed hard. The main disadvantage of the 21s is "Summer Performance" tires that will have poor winter grip. More aftermarket wheel and tire options are likely to become available in future years.
@lyfandeth
@lyfandeth Год назад
There's always (the same) trade-off of mileage and performance when you change wheel and tire sizes. Among other things, everything else aside, low profile tires will ride harsher, give better performance, and need expensive wheel replacement when you hit potholes that a higher profile tire would safely pass over. The limited choices in tires and wheels apply to most cars. Same way that an M+S rated genuine snow tire will always be different from summer slicks, wet or dry, rain or snow.

My Lucid Air arrives in a month and it has 19” wheels for range and comfort. I’ll take the compromise on style to improve these factors. I chose 19” on a new Tesla model S for a better ride & range because several owners said 21’s were awful. I also chose 19’s on Lucid because EV naysayers always ask how short is my range. 19’s allow me to boast longer range than their ice vehicle.
@jorgecintron9674
@jorgecintron9674 Год назад
Range is still king and in our situation we need max range. With the 21’s you’re basically removing the buffer when charging to 80%. In other words with the 19’s you could still reach far destinations at 80% SOC but will have to charge to 100% with the 21’s going the same distance. It’s a big deal. The range is what sold us if not we would have just went with a Model S long range and saved $35k.

Curious about the 20’s as well. Also curious as to what you would purchase in my scenario. I have a 152mi one-way trip to work, where the car will seat for 3-4 days outside, before coming back and driving back home 152 miles. I currently have a LR model 3 that I have to charge on the way back. I have an order for the Touring Air on 20’s. I’m also considering model S/X, And Rivian R1S. I like the convenience of charging in the Tesla and am familiar with their products, but curious in my scenario what you would pick. Thanks!

What’s this thing (obsession) you have with wheels? Don’t you remember from kindergarten that the “Wheels on the bus [or car] go ‘round and ‘round”? That’s all they need to do! He also does a similar test if you return the charge is the car back to 50% again to get the killer reported by the chargers, deals with possible inaccuracies in with the car reports. Of course he de-rates the value by I believe 8% for charging losses. He has this data on numerous vehicles in a Google sheet.

I assume that few EV drivers aside from Kyle, Tom [insert Cake "Going the Distance" soundtrack] drive for 5+hours w/o stopping for a bio-break and grabbing a little charge while they're at it. Once a car can reliably break the 300 mile barrier and make the run from Amarillo to Trinidad or other long lonely stretches between chargers, travelling all comes down to charging speed and how pleasant the car is to be in. For me, I chose the Air GT. I just like its vibe and love its overall performance. Heading from DFW to Little Rock tomorrow to spend the week in the Ozarks. Fun roads and a car able to enjoy them. Will also have a motorcycle there because, well, you have to. I will take my tablet along to see Kyle's canyon run. I took my Lucid up Poudre a month ago but traffic and construction were pretty awful, then it started to rain. Will be interesting to see how he does.

@Miata822 Год назад
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 The software fundamental to the operation of the car (motor calibration, suspension, traction control, stability control, ABS) has been faultless. BMS/Charging is great. The adaptive cruise is a joy to use, especially in stop and go. Cross traffic and automatic emergency braking (yes, I tested it in a controlled environment) works well. The lane assist is functional but clunky but that should go away with lane centering update. Several nav updates, including satellite view, are much improved and actually useful. Audio works well on Bluetooth, radio, and Tidal is great. Auto wipers work well. I never use auto-High Beam. The app is pretty basic but functions well. The lock/unlock with the key/remote can be quirky when the battery gets low, which it does too quickly. Sometimes the center screens are still slow to boot up, but that is less common than when I got the car in March. In any case the car can be driven immediately w/o waiting for the infotainment screens. So, in general I don't have a problem with the software. It is still clearly a work in progress, but I have seen progress since I got the car just over 6 months ago. I love driving and love to travel, often travel to good roads just to drive them. I'm in the DFW area and have been to Colorado and the Ozarks, heading back to the Ozarks tomorrow. Almost got the Taycan but the Air is far more comfortable and doesn't give up that much in cornering.

Hey Kyle, yeh those 21 inch wheels get you "all weak in the thighs" for their eye candy appeal but have you even for a minute moment in time evaluated the durability of those 21'inchers on somewhat marginally maintained roads? How do they fair on roads with potholes & similar defects that are quite challenging to tires with smaller sidewall profiles when compared to 18 or 19 inch wheels with taller sidewall profiles? Some erudite folks might consider the 21 inch wheels compleat with their skinny sidewall tires to be BUTT UGLY especially when their DURABILITY is very questionable.
@missingegg

Maybe I just don't care that much about what other people think, but I'm having trouble seeing why I'd buy bigger tires with worse range and worse ride quality just to have better looks. Large diameter wheels are great for people who are really doing performance driving. But let's be honest, very few of us do that. It's mostly just an aesthetic choice.

Tom got over 500 miles in his 70 MPH loop test while Kyle got 435 miles on one test with 19 inch wheels (4.0 miles/kWh), perhaps 450 in a second test on 19 inch wheels (between 4.1 and 4.2 miles/kWh) and now 392 miles of range on 21 inch wheels (3.6 miles/kWh). These variations in results are a bit nuts, on the same route in very similar weather. The 21 inch wheels might offer a bit more air resistance, but in general I associate differences in tire range with differences in rolling resistance. And, if I plug the Lucid Air into a calculator measuring air and rolling resistance, I can easily account for these different results with relatively modest differences in the rolling resistance coefficient. Which leads me to suspect that much of the Lucid Air’s remarkable range is based on VERY low rolling resistance 19 inch tires.

Very little difference in the appearance of the larger versus the smaller wheels. Rather, having experience the larger wheels on my Tesla model three which has yielded increase danger of grinding the wheels into curbs, bottoming out on potholes, increased noise, reduced range and reduce riding comfort, I see no reason to have these larger wheels and low profile tires which simply say stupid and impractical. There is no way that you’re going to get anywhere near the full cornering potential of these vehicles if you drive extremely fast. You would only see a difference with the larger wheels if you were at a point where the vehicle was near its traction limit which would probably be extremely dangerous if not illegal in those use cases.

The 14% difference in inefficiency is tolerable if one wants better dynamic capability on warm roads and the bling factor of the 21'" wheels. Warm weather performance surely is much better wtih either the 21 ore 20" Lucid wheels. They are dangerous on cold roads, much less slippery ones. Of course, appearance is subjective, but is it necessary to denigrate the apperance of the 19' wheels? To me the 21'" wheels are too flashy as well as having dubious durability given the low aspect ratio tires even on perfectly flat surfaces with extreme cornering where they have been seen to disintegrate. I have 19" wheels on my AGT in part because the 20" are not available now and because no winter compound tires are avaiable for the 21 or 20" wheels. I will order 20" wheels for the warm weather in March through Nov. in NE. By next year I believe that winter compound tires for the AGT should be avaiable for 20" (staggered) wheels that are fitted with Michelin summeor compound tires.

0:33 What the fuck. That’s not “transparency” that’s just opinion and it’s stupid crude and rude.

Kyle's obsession with big wheels is a big disappointment, in someone that has otherwise produced well-made videos. The idea that one would make real sacrifices in range or energy cost - not for something useful like more passenger or cargo space, but for a teeny tiny cosmetic change that 99% of passerby would not even notice... - sorry, it just leaves me with the impression that Kyle is a very shallow person. If the vehicle's range is indeed so good that losing 15% of it is simply irrelevant, this means that Lucid made the battery too big, making the car too expensive, and that they should have simply shrunk the battery and lowered the price.

Weird comment and a bit judgemental. Its a test for people that like different options and who cares what someone else likes it's their car.

Can you check out the real battery capacity?
