I have never had so much personal enjoyment and connection with any other camera before, and I have been on the road with many cameras in my last forty years... Thank you so much for your pation and enthusiasm and certainly for your wonderful photographs. I'm looking forward to every new episode!

I loved your comment about the camera taking you back to when you first fell in love with photography, that was my experience too. I switched to Olympus from Canon FF around 4 years ago and it completely reinvigorated my photography. This is not to denigrate any other brand, ultimately it's finding the one that works best for you (and I genuinely believe in this day and age there's no such thing as a bad camera), but the Olympus/OM-System just suited me to a tee. Love the vlog too.

I have to admit the one camera I really love using is my Olympus OM-1 35mm slr. Yep, tis a 1970's film camera and it's a joy to use. I wanted one when I was a kid in the 70's and swore I would own one some day. That day came a few years back and I am not disappointed, it was truly worth the wait. I don't use the built in light meter as I haven't had a battery in it for ages and it's fine, it's a fully mechanical camera. I have an old Gossen Trisix selenium cell light meter that is still accurate half a century after being made and it is definietly a great experience. There's a lot to be said for having a "Batteries Not Included" day out. Just me, my OM-1 and a couple of Zuiko lenses. Bliss!

Oh man watching this video and the landscape you are walking thru with all the greens and water and trees. This is an infrared shooters paradise. Just recently got a em5 mark ii ifull spectrum and it is so nice and never go out without it now with a couple of IR filters. Plus you can shoot a lot of stuff in the middle of the day when the lighting for normal color photography isn’t the best. It would definitely look into IR. It’s just fun

Yesterday I picked up my OM-5 model from 2015. It’s been sitting in my den all these years. I went bananas over how much fun it is. More simple than the latest gear, it was sheer joy to fool around with its basic features. A great camera. Many times I wonder if people fully use a camera’s capabilities before they jump to a newer model just because it is new.

Definitely get that buzz you talk about from my Fuji XPro 1. It's an 11 year old camera that I'll take anywhere, any weather, generally chuck about, and get great pictures from. What's more, after years of abuse, there's nothing that's happened to affect the quality of the pictures. Your point about just treating it as a tool is definitely part of the magic.

I sold all of my Canon full frame gear 18 months ago and I invested in Olympus and a mixture of Olympus and Panasonic lenses. I did it to reduce the weight and bulk l carried. As a person with mobility and health issues and it is the best move I have made. I still get awards in international exhibitions and sell prints. The quality is great and the EM1 mark 3 and EM5 mark 3 are feature filled and convenient and unobtrusive in busy areas. Lovely images as always and so much inspiration and enthusiasm.

Hi Henry! Another great video. It's a lovely area there, I know it well. Great to see your transition to mft. I've always enjoyed your videos, irrespective of what camera you were using (the choice of camera is far from the most important element of photography!) but as a mft user for many years I can relate even more to your videos now. (Lumix user myself). Use the same Peak Design clip on my rucksack when walking or cycling, shoot handheld the majority of the time and general just enjoy being out and about in the countryside with my camera with me. And yes, it's great fun! 😊

What a treat! Not only got another great video from you, but also got a happy trip down memory lane. Back in November 2019 we were staying in Avirmore for a few days, and one morning woke up to thick fog and I knew Craigellachie was where we needed to go. I took one of my favourite photos from Scotland around the spot you were by at 21:50. We then went to the top of the crag and were treated to a cloud inversion. For a couple of people from the sub-tropical Gold Coast the entire day was such a treat! Thanks for a great video Henry, and I second your plug for Aviemore and it's pubs, and the Cairngorms in general. We also stayed in Braemar and that was also wonderful, though much smaller.

My favourite ever camera was a Fuji bridge camera, went from that to Sony and just couldn’t get on with it at all so traded it in and have gone back to Fuji with the X-T5. Early days as not used it much but think it’s going to be fun again. It’s brilliant (and inspirational) to see a pro photographer using what would be classed by some as a non pro camera and getting such enjoyment and great results from it 👍

It is good to hear you talking about the composition and light long before you even touch the camera. I have often walked past a scene that I thought would be good, gone on further and then came back, only to find the light gone. Technically IBIS is very good. I have had the E-M5ii for many years with its "4.5 stops", which is good but its effectiveness reduces with the length of the lens. The performance of a super-zoom is compromised by that which makes it a super-zoom, its extreme zoom range. They try hard but cannot be good at all focal lengths. The 12-200 is a 16x super-zoom. The 12-200 is often compared to the Panasonic 14-140 10x travel lens (which does punch way above its weight) but a more reasonable comparison is the often forgotten Panasonic 45-200ii f/4-5.6 4x zoom. The mark 1 dates from 2008, one of the first MFT lenses and not much loved due to the primitive Mega-OIS. The mark 2 with Power-OIS sorted it out but you will find both rather cheaply on the used market. The E-M5ii handles the mark 1 rather better than a Lumix back does. With the mark 2, no change on an Olympus back but a different animal on a Lumix. For long shots, Olympus do have a soft-shutter function.

I am trying to recognize anything in Aviemore from Google Maps that I can identify but no luck. I stayed there in 1977 at a small lodge/pub on the main road owned by a distant relative, Jimmy Ross. Back then the ski facility was very new I believe. Of course being from Canada there had to be a curling team from Canada on the ice that day, but mostly in the bar. I was driving through the highlands staying with several aunts and uncles. Sadly my last time in Scotland and seeing any of them.

Congrats on new camera and thank you for the wonderfull adventure. The first 2 photos i do like the first one a wee bit more, focal distance brings out more detail, however the lighting on the right side and reflection of second image seemed to give a scale of the scene. To answer Your question at 28 min, i have used my phone (Nigel gave me idea) usually on more intimate scenes, it seems to help “focus” on scene/subj.

I started out photography with a Nikon D7200, which is funny, because I remember, you had the same camera when I started following the channel. But I could just never really get to love using that camera. It was a brilliant piece of gear, but not intuitive at all for me. Then a couple years later I got myself a Fujifilm X-H1.. and it just got glued to my hand. It taught me to adore the process of taking an image. There's something about these retrostyled cameras that's different. Great video!

Morning Henry! That was a really great video, thanks for taking us on a good tour of that nature reserve, and sharing some really superb images! For me personally, the primary enjoyment is being at a beautiful (and peaceful) location, and the photographs that I try and capture are more to retain a good memory of where I've been and then to share with others. As you say, the camera is just a tool, knowing what elements of a scene to capture is the real challenge.

I love the OM5. When I got mine, I literally just received it, and headed off on a trip to Japan. Best travel camera as far as I am concerned. Only had the 12-45mm F4 PRO lens with me though, but it was perfect for a lightweight kit. I am now retired but one of my prior consultancy places was with MacDonald Hotels, and I was supposed to visit Avemore through them, but my trip got cancelled. What a lovely little early morning walk you've taken us on, thank you Henry. I have a Canon camera entry level and I absolutely love it! I only bought it 18 months ago but have taken thousands of photos, as I am fortunate enough to get out 2-3 times a week. I think of a location and go with the flow. Don't really have any expectations but rather a few ideas of what I might be looking for on the day. I subsequently have a ball, as I wander about and come home with some photos that pleasantly surprise me. You could say I'm hooked, it's so much fun!

Interesting to hear your thoughts regarding the new camera: I tend to agree that the OM products are a delight to use. They always seem to have capabilities that are easy to access, which points to a depth of thought behind the system. I never really felt comfortable with my Fujifilm, and though I still have my RX-10, digging into its menus is excruciating. Yet all have been designed to be _used_. So in all likelihood, it's probably just the way my mind works that sees me comfortable with OMS. The same goes for processing software - I'm enjoying LrC, but it doesn't mean other applications are inadequate in any way. One thing I found just a few days ago, the OM high-res mode can be used to smooth water as if you were using an ND filter, and you gain a bit more dynamic range (according to the experts). I had a really good fiddle with that, and I think I got some promising results. I needed to apply a bit more thought to what I was doing, but it was just an experiment.

Henry, I know people are going to think I'm silly for feeling this way, but I have a special place in my heart for my Nikon D5100. I know there are cameras with a lot more mega pixels, that focus faster, and take better low light pictures; but I love my old D5100. I keep looking at D5300s and D7100s but I just like my old camera. I've even considered replacing my D5100 with a D610. But every time I go to pull the trigger I change my mind. I wind up buying a lens, or some other piece of equipment that goes with my Nikon. This morning I called KEH and ordered a Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED IF Autofocus APS-C Lens to replace a Sigma lens that is about to die. I thought about getting a 50mm prime lens, but why bother when I'm happy with my crop sensor body. I guess when my old girl finally gives up and stops doing the job I'll look into getting something that has a few more bells and whistles. But in the mean time my D5100 and I are going to keep taking photos.

New camera at last (postage isn’t what it used to be). Your reflection photos seem to take on a kind of Claud Monet feel ~ absolutely stunning.

Cracking video Henry, I've had my OM5 about 3 weeks and really enjoying photography again after hauling around heavy cameras. The smaller size is great for hiking, love the image stabilization and the built in nd filters, the colours are painterly, as were your super forest images. Looking forward to more 👍

Henry, enjoyed your video as usual ( in Aussie a bloody ripper ) but forget the stills for a moment your video work is excellent and the colours from the landscape pop. I think image stabilisation is the way of the future in photography, anything to make you leave gear at home to capture low light situations is a bonus & yes enjoy the moment it's all good.

Cracking images there Henry. Loved the colours. Looks like you’re having great fun with the new camera. That’s amazing image stabilisation too. Anything that helps you leave the tripod at home is a great thing in my opinion. I really dislike the damn things 😂

I have a used OM E-M5 with a pancake lens as my car camera for those opportunities when I don't have my main camera. Great cameras. I have 3 olympus cameras including a modified for IR E-M10. Great video, lovely shots.

Hi Henry, watching you using the OM-5 has really got me excited about the idea of a move to MFT. With increasing age I just dont enjoy lugging around a Canon 6D mk2 and assorted lenses so going down the MFT route means I can continue to enjoy my photography . Thanks for the inspiration and keep exciting us with your adventures.

Loved this one Henry, very exacting on your thought processes for composition, very helpful. Beautiful area, your right it is good for the soul. When I go out in those beautiful places I have trouble capturing what I am seeing convincingly. It's videos like this that really help with the process of framing the shot. Thank you so much.

Great video Henry with some cracking images. We always use Aviemore as a stop off for an night or 2 on our Scottish roadtrips. Around Loch Garten and Loch Eilein not far from the town is pretty good too. Regarding the enjoyment of photography....absolutely! it doesn't matter what tool i am using for the job, i just live and breath it, it gets the excitement and creative juices flowing whether out in the wilderness or overcoming challenges in the studio. Thats why i specialise and shoot across a wide variety of genres and not to restricted myself as a professional photographer/ retoucher in to shoot one aspect of the industry. Looking forward to the next one.

I love all of Scotland for exploring and finding surprise photo locations. However, for me, it's only late October through to Easter. The insects are just too bloodthirsty vicious buggers the rest of the year. When it comes to Aviemore, it's also a good central spot for visiting distilleries - a must for me in Scotland. Some of those places are also very photogenic in a surprising and very different way.

Really nice images Henry. I remember going back to a Fuji bridge camera from a DSLR around 2010. The reason for doing so was that I'd just got a new dog and couldn't handle all the heavy gear as well. I found myself automatically 'helping' the bridge camera do what a DSLR would have wanted and as a result stopped worrying about whether or not it could take the shot. Meanwhile the dog got taken to new places and so did the much lighter weight camera. I didn't give up on DSLRs as their image quality always had a higher potential, and with a certain lens the filters could be shared. New cameras get you out and about more and that's probably the best reason to get one.

Great video Henry, I what I found as I get older is I like to travel light. I do own a dslr with several lens and tripod but recently I discovered the Panasonic Lumix fz300 Bridge camera. The camera is super light, 25-600mm, shoots raw, 4k video and 4k photo burst up 30fps, the down side is it is only 12mg file size.

I thought I was a Nikon for life user, film SLRs and APSC digital SLRs until age and health issues made me realise in 2016 I had to lighten the load. So these days my landscape kit is an Olympus E-M1 ii with 14-150mm and 9-18mm lenses. I rarely take a tripod these days too. No regrets.

I ditched Canon my DSLR for the mark 1 em-5 back in 2012 and bought a panasonic 45-175 at the time to pair with the 12-50 kit zoom. The system being so small and lightweight was the main reason. I have knackerd shoulders, probably from lugging backpacks all over the shop with too much weight. I now use the em5 mark iii and love it for much the same reasons you mentioned. There's just something pleasing about it. I'm in Scotland with it right now, up near the isle of Skye. Now paired with the 12-45f4 and pan leica 8-18mm along with the still evergreen 45-175 for the most part. I have a, some would say, superior Panasonic G9 too, but that stayed home this time. Lovely in the hand as it is, its heavy and not really what m43 is about for me. Having that camera always brought me confusion. I know it's good and probably technically superior in many ways, but shooting with the em5 series is fun and i always feel more happy and content when using them. I had to force myself to leave it behind for my latest trip because i didnt want to spend half an hour trying to decide which camera to take each day and im so glad i did. My backup is the Em5.3s predecessor the mark ii. Still a fab camera, but dont feel guilty leaving it behind in the car as a backup if the worst should happen to my current cam. Hope you love your Om5 as much as i do its predecessors. A word of caution, my em5 body type is the same polycarbonate as yours, i believe. There were numerous reports of tripod mount failures on my version by people using peak design style clips. I think this was because the mounting point was/is weak in that area when carried that way. I dont know if its still true for the newer OM5 model though. I picked up a small and light arca swiss grip for mine, which is on the camera all the time and spreads the load. Dont know if it would work in the Peak design clip you have though. Liked the first of the two birch tree shots, the one before the sunlight hit.

Cheers Henry, it’s Sean in Atlanta. I am very proud of you, laddie! In October of 2023 to purchase a M4/3 camera is a brave step forward in this (yawn) tired time of people banging on about full frame! I also just purchased an Olympus EMI MII brand new for the amazing price of $699 US! I have had that camera before and sold it, but decided that, for that little amount of money and the serious amount of tech that is in that camera, it was worth the purchase! Free yourself from that tripod and enjoy not carrying the world in your backpack! I still see guys who bring one lens that they know will be the only lens they will use, and yet carry their humongous backpack full of crap, for no reason at all! Isn’t it nice to be free and have the world’s best IBIS with dual stabilisation with the lens? Anyway, I feel sorry for people who turn their nose up at a format they have never used while you and I laugh all the way to the top of the mountain with no back pain! Sean
