(Old school method) fill your filter sock with clean small grain white beach sand. Run 24 hours. Optional: After you remove sand, then use charcoal. Run 24 hours. Look up water polishing.

Late at night, when all is dark. Turn off your pumps and filter. Shine a flashlight into your dark tank. Touch the flashlight to the glass. Look at your micro fauna being attracted to the light. We want these in our tank. The rest of the stuff in the water column is organic waste and such. The trick to filtration is: keep the good, remove the bad. More on this if your intrested.

On the return water area, can you put some cheap filter floss or polyfilter? That should catch and make your water clear, and it will catch any unnecessary ditritis and you don't need to wash. Just bin it every week or when you do water changes.

do you mean where the actually surface skimmer I moved is? Because I do have filter floss in the back chambers that the water runs through that I usually rinse or change depending on how it's looking.

@@DreamStateLiving that area would be extracting water right. Doesn't it make sense to have filter floss on return area? Thus any bits are picked up and doesn't end up in your tank? I don't have a red sea so don't know.. Tbh

Does that piece pop out to clean it in vinegar. Looks like dust from room. You running central heat or ac. Change filters in ducts. Looks like dust from air.

i run a skimmer and i still always have some crap on the top of the water. Usually this has to do with either excess nutrients or algae. I cant get rid of it. Lets see an update if yours worked soon

lol well its not good that you have the same issue but happy to hear even with a skimmer it happens lol ill keep ya updated!
