Really good reaction. You’ll have to watch it several times. It’s the kind of movie that sticks in your craw. Daniel Day Lewis also won Best Actor Oscars for MY LEFT FOOT and LINCOLN so those would be obvious choices. And would you please do a Marlon Brando movie, like ON THE WATERFRONT or STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE?? He and DDL are tied for GOAT. I can’t decide who’s a better method actor. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I named my dog H.W. because of this movie. When he gets rowdy I tell him "That's enough now H.W., that's enough now." One of the greatest performances ever by an actor, and Daniel Plainview is my hero. 😄

Daniel Plainview was an example of pure ambition driving everything in his life to the point where he could never be satisfied. There was never enough. *Last of the Mohicans is a MUST for any Daniel Day Lewis fan.

Notice how Daniel is robbing the town and giving to them at the exact same time, giving them a means to make bread, a new road, because he owns most of the land and has that charisma, you'd swear, out of context and in that moment he cares about them, and then he is robbing from them of their only asset, their oil, because he loves money and hates most people. An interesting but sick character trait.

2007 was a phenomenal year for this "modern western" genre. As many in the comments have already pointed out, "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood" are linked in many viewers' minds because of their nihilistic similarities. May I suggest two other contenders from the Class of 2007 - "3:10 to Yuma" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"?

The Assassination of Jesse James is another powerhouse of a film filled with great performances that's largely a character study of a man and and a meditation on fame. I feel it's a very under appreciated film and is probably Brad Pitt's best performance (IMHO). Like There Will Be Blood, it was also shot my Roger Deakins as cinematographer and, like There will be Blood, it's just beautiful to look at and has a very distinctive look.

37:25 Sam gets it. Daniel had been searching for success all of his life and so once he had it he didn't know what to do with it, or it wasn't as rewarding as he thought it would be. It reminds me of the numerous troubled rulers and actors and musicians that have committed suicide while at the top of their game because once they had tasted success it was not as sweet as they believed it would be. Making your way to the top is a challenge, once you reach the top the challenge is over, for most of us that would be a reward but for some it is just an empty place.

It's also prevalent for elite athletes that find great difficulty transitioning to "normal" life after their career is over. Doctors have suggested that the elevated chemical/hormonal levels in their blood whilst training and competing daily over decades build neurological pathways that can cause an addiction which cannot be replicated once they retire, unless they ride roller-coasters, do extreme sports all day. It can cause anxiety and depression for many if they don't seek help. Many turn to drink, drugs and gambling and lose everything.

Paul and Eli are supposed to be twins but there’s a story behind it. Apparently, the actor that was hired to play Eli was so intimidated by playing opposite Daniel Day Lewis that he was let go after shooting started. Paul Dano, who had already been hired to play Paul, was given the part of Eli and twin thing was written into the story.

I've read this too and I'm no director, but it's not what I would have done. The scene with Dano as Paul is short enough to re-shoot with another actor if they decided Dano would make a better Eli. Just reshoot that short scene and stop confusing everyone.

A lesser mentioned Daniel Day Lewis movie, "In The Name Of The Father", NEVER gets mentioned when his name gets brought up. It's based on a true story and I've never felt so f'n angry after watching a movie! I'd like to see both of your reactions if you ever get around to it, lol. Thanks & great reaction!

All his performances are amazing, that is the thing. DDL is currently the only actor I am trying to watch all his films where he has a lead or significant role (like the Bounty, where he is like the 3rd maybe even 4th or 5th down the list of leads). One thing that makes this easier compared to other great actors for me is how often DDL star in films in genres I like, for example he is in a LOT of historical dramas/period pieces. But DDL alone can float films I would normally have zero interest in, like "The Ballad of Jack and Rose". Still gotta see that boxer film and the one where he play a polish(?) dude. And perhaps some other non leads roles where he plays a significant part.

I don't know where you guys are based, but here in SoCal there was a good year long bit of people around L.A going "I drink your milkshake!" after this movie came out. It stopped around the time Iron Man and Dark Knight came out the next summer. But my goodness, this little catchphrase was EVERYWHERE in pop culture. It was the embodiment of a meme in real life taking place with real people shouting it daily.

One of the greatest films of all time. Essential cinema. Paul Thomas Anderson's peak achievement. Great films are the ones where you don't know how to feel after it's over. They aren't trying to win your approval. But they will call you back. And they will reward on repeated viewings.

@@andrewburgemeister6684 I COMPLETELY agree with you. There is "Boogie Nights" and "There Will Be Blood" and then there is all the rest of PTA's work. "Boogie Nights" is a perfect movie, and one hell of a party. There is NO WAY they won't love "Boogie Nights"; I can't say that about any other PTA movie. (I'm not saying they won't, but "Boogie Nights" is a slam dunk)

This is one of my favourite films ever. It’s definitely worth a couple re-watches whenever you guys can, because it just gets better every single time. Can see/get many different character moments, shots and even unique interpretations, like Planview being a vampire. A suave but deadly creature in the night, sucking the blood of the land, getting hungrier as he goes, living alone in an empty castle, and to carry on his legacy, biting/turning those who he sees himself in, like H.W. or his “brother.” But as soon as you threaten his way of life or his castle, he’ll kill you or cut you out with little remorse, like he’s a superior being entirely above you, because to him, he is and always will be. But in reality, he’s just a former shell of a man that became a cold-blooded monster deserving a stake in the heart. I love this film to pieces, literally just because you could see so much in it, literally and figuratively.

So I think the main plot of the movie is that Daniel has a miserable existence and he doesnt understand why. He thinks that other people make him feel that way, so he wants to have enough money and power to be able to keep everyone away from himself. But the real reason Daniel is miserable is because he is lonely, his hatred towards other people made him unable to sustain any type of relationship. When Daniel adopted H.W. he finally wasnt alone anymore and that made him happy, but that coincided with the first time he struck oil, so Daniel mixed things up and associated his happines with becoming rich. Once H.W became deaf they werent able to communicate with each other anymore and once again Daniel became lonely and unhappy. Since he never understood why he felt that way, instead of learning sign language, during that last conversation with H.W. we can see that he never learned it, and restoring his relationship with his son he focused his efforts in making more money and becoming more powerful. So at the end of the movie we see that Daniel became the richest and at the same time the most miserable man in the world.

14:31 That is known as a "blow out" and they still happen today, if a driller has underestimated the pressure of an oil source or they haven't used equipment rated for such a source then piercing the void that contains the oil means that that oil is going to erupt out of the Earth like a black volcano. Oil pockets are often under enormous pressure, if you pierce one of those pockets then oil will blast up into the air like a punctured water balloon. In the early days of oil "mining" a blow out would be celebrated because it meant you had hit the motherlode, but as the industry progressed people would recognise the dangers of a blow out - the pressure release would destroy equipment and tear men apart. Not to mention the obvious fire risk...

Depending on the chamber pressure that a drilling platform expects to find it will place mechanisms within the bore hole itself and at the surface of the bore hole that are designed to withhold the expected pressure fully or release in controlled bursts. The Deepwater Horizon accident of 2011 was the result of a failure of just such a device. The bore hole had been lined with the wrong material and that caused a back pressure to build up, but had the BOP (Blow Out Preventer) held it's ground then the accident would never have happened, but the BOP malfunctioned and was also not sufficient for the pressure involved. In many other blow out events the BOP has worked perfectly, sealing a bore hole before any gas or oil could escape.

I love this film, regardless of what some people think, it's not a boring film, Daniel Day-Lewis performance keeps you engaged. Great reaction. Should definitely check other Paul Thomas Anderson Films, especially Boogie Nights.

Even Scorsese who originally said that had a few lines more to clarify what he actually meant, and he had nothing against the event movies. No Country for Old Men was being shot at the same time nearby. When the derrick went up in flames, @15:45 the smoke was so thick that No Country had to halt filming for few days until it all cleared away.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of my favorite directors. Boogie Nights put Anderson on the map, and Magnolia put him up there with the top directors of his generation. The writing, directing, cinematography and music are extraordinary. Also, Tom Cruise gives such a top level performance, it has to be seen to be believed. Please keep up the great work.

There Will Be Blood is my #1 favorite film of all time. I’ve seen it hundreds of times and I think it’s truly perfect. I hope you and Sam go through all of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films. Much like Tarantino, he’s only done 9 films in his career so I hope you can go through his films. Some great highlights would be Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, and The Master-all are perfect films to me.

Funny thing is the first few times I watched it I didn’t like the movie, but yet, I kept returning solely due the Day-Lewis’s performance and the filmmaking (I’m 15 and I’m starting that film nerd obsession) and overtime I just fell in love with it. Maybe hundreds is an exaggeration but let’s just say if push came to shove I could do a one-man stage production and recite this movie word-for-word. I just love everything about it lol

My #1 of my desert island movies. I could watch this everyday. This was being filmed at the same time, less than 10 miles from the Coen brothers shooting No Country for Old Men. The oil derrick fire had to pause shooting for the Coen brothers for the day.

Paul Thomas Anderson obliterates the idea of "three act structure," and just sends his stories going anywhere he damn well pleases. And even though this movie is ostensibly based on a novel, he really only uses the basic idea behind it to build his own story.

I don’t know boogie nights did seem like it had a three act structure not that I’m complaining I guess what you said about his directing style didn’t come until later in his career

I thought this movie had a clear three act structure. The first act is the first 20 minutes or so establishing Daniel's character. The middle and the bulk of the story is the second act which explores his character more extensively by telling a story of his rivalry with Eli at the Sunday Ranch. The last act was the ending after the last time jump where Daniel's character reaches its conclusion through his "settling of scores". PTA's films aren't structured around narratives, but rather character building. The narratives only serve the overarching directive of revealing more of the characters. If you see it through this lens you will see very clear three or four act structures in every single one of his films.

Paul Thomas Anderson described this as a horror movie when he was courting Daniel Day Lewis to play the role of Daniel, the actor was semi-retired at the time. The metaphors are plain to see, oil is blood, Plainview is a vampire and his nemesis is Eli Sunday the preacher.

This movie is one of my all time faves. It’s a masterpiece of modern cinema. The performances by Lewis and Dano, the cinematography and production design, the rich symbolism, the music, and of course the story. I love how Eli and Daniel are so similar despite loathing each other so immensely. I think that’s why they hate each other - they can’t stand to have a rival and yet that is what fuels them most.

🎯 I got to meet Michael Keaton at a Dodger game in the late 80s. I went to the snack bar and noticed people rubber necking toward the guy in front of me. I slide over to see and it was Michael Keaton. I wanted to say something that wasn't typically fan-like, so I said, "Excuse me Michael, I just wanted to say I enjoy your work." He said, "Ah, hey, thanks. Can I buy you a drink?" When I heard the word "drink" my mind went immediately to alcohol: I don't drink. So I reflexively said, "No." (Yeah, I said that. Palm to forehead) I got back to my seat and told me girlfriend and the couple we came with. The ladies lost their minds. Game over and they see Michael and his girlfriend walking up the steps to leave, and they scream, "Michael!" He hears them, grabs his girlfriends hand and they both run up the stairs and out the stadium, being chased by my girlfriend and her friend. To this day, I think of that day and wish I could meet Michael again to apologize on so many levels.

The music was awesome for this movie. Jonny Greenwood should have won an Oscar for the score but Jonny used music he had previously released as a solo artist and was not eligible for best original score.

This was filmed, damn near, on the same location as "No Country for Old Men, and at the same time. The smoke from the oil derrick fire was so thick that it halted filming on "No Country" until the burnt oil smoke cleared. Also I think HW issue, other than deafness, was Traumatic Brain Injury. Similar to how Phineas Gage's personality changed when he had that spike / crowbar driven through his head.

Another aspect of the movie is that the blood in the movie is Oil. It is used to replace the blood of Christ as we see many scenes where OIl has a religious tie to it. Take for example when Daniel baptizes H.W. with a drop of oil on his forehead. Or when Daniel finds oil he wipes it on his hand and raises it like a pastor would at a sermon. Oil represents the new blood of the land replacing religion since all the prayer in the world for these downtrodden communities has not brought water, rain, or nutrient-rich land. The towns where Daniel Plainview wanders are desolate and destitute of good tiding. So oil has to come and save them. And you hear the promises he makes them, new school, roads, water, better crops. The life they all dreamed of.

MASTERPIECE. I remember leaving the theater saying to my friend, “I know I liked it, I just don’t know why yet.” These performances stick with you until you see it again. Then they become a part of you. And Jonny Fing Greenwood of Radiohead scoring the soundtrack. Paul Dano only had a few days to prepare. Paul Thomas Anderson also filmed most of the same scenes in multiple locations to see if it worked better. I could watch this movie every day. And sometimes I do!

I think HW was acting out because he had lost his hearing and ability to communicate effectively. He was dealing with the trauma of losing his hearing and his father not understanding how to deal with it emotionally. People who lose their hearing later in life are still able to effectively communicate (continue to talk), but it’s very possible that a young child who lost their hearing would stop speaking as they would be unable to hear themselves and have no audible feedback to respond to. I’m a pediatric speech pathologist and I often see frustration in my deaf patients (and any child) when they are unable to communicate their wants and needs. It can lead to severe behavioral issues if a parent is unsupportive or unable to assist the child to communicate. And these are just kiddos who were born deaf or partially deaf. Poor HW lost his hearing around 10 maybe, so the trauma and anger issues would be real.

Paul Dano is awesome. He was brilliant in War & Peace too. I saw this movie in the cinema. It was stunning on the big screen. An amazing study of a complex and extreme man. I loved the last line: ‘I’m finished’. So many ways those words can be read. Daniel day Lewis put great performances into Age of Innocence and my left foot.

44:54 I think to put him in a good/bad guy category would be too simplistic. He is both and neither. He is a human being with a heart, but he is also ruthless and he hates people in general. He cares about his ambition above everything else, and he has his own morality. What he said about using the kid to make deals is true, that was part of the reason he took him, but he also loved him. Although I would say his love is a bit different from the love regular people have. I think he loved him because he saw the kid as an extension of himself. For him it was more "my son" than another, distinct, human being. And I think that's why he was so bitter at the end, during those years the film doesn't show the kid grew up and started having his own life and his own plans, independently from Daniel, so Daniel could no longer see him as an extension of himself. Now the kid was just another person, another competitor. That's what he meant by "killing my image of you as my son".

He got rejected by his son, that is what you see in his old days. He was so wounded after loosing his brother, being betrayed, having his pride played with - I mean who knows how low was him before we meet him for him to rise so high - and then he was rejected. After his son grew into a man he wanted to become his own man in his father's business but that just alienated him further, the last Daniel had.

High five! :D For me, this is what I watch movies for: to show me something I never thought I'd see, to give me an experience I could never otherwise have. The last section isn't my fave part but Sam at 37: 25 really nails what, for me, it's all about. What a movie, what a performance. And as for director Paul Thomas Anderson? BOOGIE NIGHTS!!!!! A completely different kind of movie, you guys will LOVE it. Think Tarantino meets Goodfellas! Unbelievable cast, headed by Marky Mark in his greatest performance, hands down. Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham, Don Cheadle, etc etc. The absolute HIGHEST recommendation for "Boogie Nights" (1998). One of the great movies of the 90s.

One thing I always see missing from any Plainview analysis/reaction, it needs to be noted that, in addition to his mountain of other pathologies, he's also a raging alcoholic. Anybody who's ever dealt with that knows it's just gasoline on top of whatever other fires you have going on in your life. It makes bad situations 100 times worse. Fascinating character, fascinating performance. A movie I never get sick of.

I had an uncle that worked in the oil fields in Texas and Oklahoma fighting fires and it was/is an intense job. You basically have to detonate explosives to essentially blow the air away to extinguish the fire.

There was another actor to play Eli Sunday, not Paul Dano. The dude was so freaked out by Daniel Day Lewis staying in character he quit and/or was fired. Paul Dano played both characters. It 100% threw(edited) me for a loop too when the movie first came out.

Paul and Eli are twins. Originally, there were 2 different actors playing the characters. But Paul Anderson loved Dano as Paul, he had him play Eli as well and changed the story to make them twins.

A film where every second is savored, I love the location shooting, the entire feel of the movie, I’ve watched it sober, drunk, high, early morning, late night, always finding something new. I think PTA faltered with The Master and Inherent Vice. Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and TWBB are his best films IMO

The scene where Daniel says something to Eli after the baptism. It’s unknown but in the final scenes Daniel yells at Eli. “I TOLD YOU I WOULD EAT YOU!” I like to think he says to Eli that he would eat him for what he did or something like that. Another thing I realized that the first time Daniel says he loves his “son” to him it literally falls on deaf ears 😮

I think this movie is as much about what isn't shown as what is. There's little exposition of Daniel's childhood. The "I'm finished!" final line is delivered as he is sat there like a toddler who's just finished their first potty poop and is calling a parent to wipe up his 'mess', he is a stunted man. He adopts H.W perhaps because he saw himself in him and wanted to mould a 'mini-me', but that's also why he came to resent him, as H.W became a well adjusted young man with genuine love in his life. The leaving to set up his own company thing was just the breaking point for Daniel to finally lash out. His deep hatred of humanity and anybody who fosters genuine connection was momentarily dispelled by the arrival of would be brother Paul, Daniel begins to soften a little, slowly but cautiously opening up thinking he's found a genuine connection in his long lost brother, but his default cynicism retakes hold and he has his instinct proven correct, the guy is a fraud trying to leech his lifestyle and wealth - once again Daniel has his world view confirmed, people are shit, don't trust anybody. Daniel is a very pitiable character.

When I first saw the movie when it was released, it left me feeling hopeless and with a thousand questions. When I came back to the movie in my 40s, I realized it was one of the greatest acting performances of all time. Particularly the last 10 minutes. I have never seen anything like the last 10 minutes.

This is an incredible film and the performances are truly amazing. And yes, Paul is Eli’s twin brother. Originally Paul Dano was cast as only Paul, but after working into he film for a few weeks, Kel O’Neill, the original actor cast as Eli, was let go mainly due to things just not working right for writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson. It was rumored that O’Neill quit due to how intense Daniel Day-Lewis was, but that was just a rumor. So because the original actor who was going to play Eli was let go, Dano was asked to play Eli in addition to Paul and in doing so, Paul and Eli are now twin brothers rather than just brothers. Also, I think the end where Daniel tells HW he’s not his son, I think he did that in a way so he can finally be his own man and not just what Daniel wanted him to be and he’s not really happy how he did that as we saw Daniel have a flashback to a moment when HW was a kid and the two sort of having a father/son moment, but then that moment ends and Daniel probably believes that was the best way to handle that situation in that moment and is likely why he was drunk at his bowling alley. That’s just me though.

There Will Be Blood is quite a lot like Citizen Kane. Both have characters chasing after success, even though that isn't at all what he needed. What he needed was real human connections and healthy relationships, but his relentless need to wipe out the competition and to chase after success drove him to moral depravity, and caused him to drive everyone he ever cared about away.

IMO, among the 2007 films mentioned, the Coen Brothers film "No Country for Old Men" is head and shoulders from the rest. From Wikipedia: "No Country for Old Men premiered in competition at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 19... Sign language ? Originally it was invented by monks in Christian monasteries ( vows of silence middle ages ) but it became used for the deaf around this period. ( helen keller) although some people question that story. ( she was deaf and dumb ) and couldn't communicate at all until she was 11 or 12 . ( a teacher tried the monastery sign language thing and it worked)

Great reaction!! Your thoughts and comments are always so thoughtful and right on the money. I commented when you guys reacted to "Gangs of New York" that, for me personally, Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor of the last 35 years. After watching "Gangs of New York" and "There Will Be Blood'", if you really want to see his range, I recommend watching "The Last of the Mohicans", "Lincoln", "The Age of Innocence", "In the Name of the Father", and "Phantom Thread". The guy is a chameleon like no other.

Paul Dano was playing twins. Originally there were two actors, but one had to bow out, so the director just told him to play both brothers. Unfortunately this wasn't made completely clear, so it became a distraction trying to figure out whether it was twins, a scam, split personality, etc. Still a great film about ambition, the "American dream," self-delusion, etc.

Plainview wasn't a crook: he was a brilliant, ruthless misanthrope forced by circumstance to bow to the humiliating demands of people he secretly loathed. That and his pride made him a killer. Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all time.
