Paul Thomas Anderson wanted to make a nice happy movie about an oilman named Daniel Plainview and his nice pastor friend played by Paul Dano, but then highly-respected actor Daniel Day-Lewis came in and threw oily mud all over the whole thing. And that's the movie
The next episode will be: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!

Is no-one going to acknowledge the fact that Dan, James, and Riley are all wearing the exact same shirt?

Regarding the brothers being identical twins played by the same actor, I remember reading that originally a different actor was cast and dropped out late so they decided to make them identical twins pretty last minute… I don’t think that was the original intent

Dan! Glad to see him with the TJM crew, I think he brought a lot. I'd love to see an episode with Dan a featured guest alongside the OG trio! Great job as usual! Looking forward to Eternal Sunshine, as well!

They had to recast Paul for some reason either just before or during shooting so they had to use Eli (Paul dano) for both parts, its a bit confusing but its meant to be 2 different people and not have any impact on the story

Got plans to review Elvis? Only asking as I think Austin Butler will receive a nomination for his performance and I think it’d be interesting to get your takes on him, Tom Hanks accent/performance, cinematography being that it’s a Baz film, etc. Anyways thanks for continuing this channel 👍🏼

43:23 because he wasn't born into wealth, it may be his attempt at sounding sophisticated and educated, important and wealthy. An affectation to signal that. Similar things happen today, certain groups take on a certain type of speech to signal their identity.

1:22:38 Robin williams in Aladdin... that's where it traces back too. Star power in animated films. Before that, wasn't really a thing. He was PIIIIIIISSED that disney used his name in all the promotional material, I think it was actually a violation of his contract. But they are big and powerful and did it anyways.

I've read the book couple of times, and it has very little similarity with movie. Even the characters and the motives are totally different. Upton Sinclair was popular writer here in Croatia during socialist regime, because he was extreme left winger. The book is very good, with well written characters and themes ranging from big capitalist stealing land from poor, religious fanatism and the perversion of faith, about sex and love, even homosexuality, trade unions ... That said, the movie is an art piece of it's own.

12:10 certain parents believe that the "best way" to show they care is to devote themselves to the accumulation of wealth. They convince themselves that they are "doing it for their family." And completely lose sight of their family

1:21:51 this is why I hate fan castings of books or w/e... because they cast the most popular actors, ignoring that there are thousands and thousands of very talented actors who either aren't well known, are voice actors normally, or just haven't been cast in any TV or Film thing yet

I'm pretty sure the Ma in Mario is pronounced like the ma in mama. The other pronunciation sounds closer to Me (meh) in Japanese.

8:50 Upton Sinclair - American Socialist - Among the pantheon of notable American writers From the wikipedia on the film (an actually decent summary for once): After Eric Schlosser finished writing Fast Food Nation, reporters kept asking him about Upton Sinclair. Although he had read Sinclair's book The Jungle, he did not know about his other works or anything about Sinclair himself. He decided to read most of Sinclair's works, and eventually read the novel Oil!, which he loved. Schlosser, who found the book to be exciting and thought it would make a great film, sought out the Sinclair estate and purchased the film rights. He thought that he would try to find a director who was as passionate about the book as he was, but director Paul Thomas Anderson approached him first.[14] Anderson had been working on a screenplay about two fighting families. He struggled with the script and soon realized it was not working.[15] Homesick, he purchased a copy of Oil! in London, drawn to its cover illustration of a California oilfield.[16] As he read, Anderson became more fascinated with the novel. After contacting Schlosser, he adapted the first 150 pages to a screenplay. He began to get a real sense of where his script was going after making many trips to museums dedicated to early oilmen in Bakersfield.[17] Anderson changed the title from Oil! to There Will Be Blood because he felt "there's not enough of the book to feel like it's a proper adaptation".[15]

Sometime in the future we _need_ a Charles martinet edit of the film. Preferably a dub using Martinet himself. In lieu of that, a deep fake fan edit or something of that ilk. I suspect it would sound goofy, but it needs to be done. (Edit: I wrote this before James suggested the same thing, but that doesn't change the fact that I want it, so I'm not deleting this comment).

Lol it’s been an interesting recent trend for the podcast. Though there was a period in the spring where it was nonstop new movies every week and no old ones so I guess this is to compensate. In their defense, there haven’t been many big movies out lately at least that I’ve been aware of, though I’m curious to see if they’ll review Avatar 2. And I was curious about them doing Amsterdam but after its poor critical reception I doubt it will be featured here either.

From what I can tell on wiktionary, "kino" comes from the soviet film technique "kino-eye" which derives from the russian word for cinematography (kinematógraf). 4chan used to have the weirdest slang...
