How can u say that when Grand Rapids has ghettos and highly segregated neighborhoods. There are citys up north that have no ghettos and are all white. Definitely not a bad city overall but it has a huuuuuuuuge drug problem and some bad areas...

BlkWisdom101 Amoah now adays it seems that people (black and white) think its cool to be hood or uneducated. aint nothing cool about being poor. There is a huge difference between GR and Detroit. The DPS system has failed the last 2 generations, to where a huge population of our kids and there parents are functionally illiterate. There is so much desparity and depression in the D to where selling dope is one of the only job options. I dont find that in a lot of cities. There is nothing cool or fun about that. I respect the man that that can arise, and be a man.

Grand Rapids is indeed a great city. However, just because most other big cites (like Detroit, Flint, Chicago, Kalamazoo, Toledo, Fort Wayne South Bend, etc.) have high crime rates, that does *not* mean that they don't have anything good. I have been to big and dangerous cities like Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta, L.A., Milwaukee, Baltimore, Birmingham, etc. Yes, a lot of people will say that those cities are horrible when it comes to crimes, *but* they all do have some great things and good areas in all of those cities. With that being said, I'm not saying that Grand Rapids is a bad place to be because believe it or not, I was born in Grand Rapids and have lived there for the first 10 years of my life and have never had an issue living there. I love riding through downtown Grand Rapids and visiting all the nice places there. Grand Rapids does have some great places are good areas to live in.

Drugs are fucking huge here! There might not be as many murders as say Detroit or Chicago but the drug problem stretches from the ghetto out to the burbs. There is definitely bad areas in Grand Rapids and a lot of latino gangs here... The opiate epidemic here is huge right now i live in a suburb of GR and have lost 10 friends already to heroin/drug overdoses

Most of Grand Rapids's hoods aren't actually that bad. I used to live in Wyoming, Michigan, which is a Grand Rapids suburb, and I had to get to my work in Rockford (just north of Grand Rapids) and had to go through some of Grand Rapids's neighborhoods to get there. Grand Rapids is actually pretty decent for most part.

By the way, My information comes from walking on the street and working in homes all across the county every day. I talk with more people that I don't know every day then you do in a month. i also observe the consistency of peoples behaviors in public and private. here is one of my most consistent observations. every upper class home that I enter is packed with books, piles and piles of books. the smarter, more successful people in the world read books constantly.

That's great that your niece is a reader. If she is reading books that can teach her how to move up in her field of work then she may become the next to improve her surroundings. East GR is 99% white literelly. Look it up. Compare that to rich areas in Detroit like Troy, Rochester hills, West Bloomfield (which is I believe the richest city in Michigan). Or Middle class/upper class areas in Detroit like South field (Which is 50% black more than Grand Rapids city as a whole), Auburn Hills, Waterford, Madison Heights. Grand Rapids black economy is behind and I believe this is because of racism.
