Let's begin 2019 with some classical music on the theremin. Playing Debussy's first arabesque was quite a challenge on both instruments. Hope that you will appreciate this unusual arrangement !
It’s true! I haven’t seen any videos from Grégoire since he was a kid, and now this (and his other recent videos) is this finest theremin playing I’ve heard since Clara Rockmore. Thank you, Grégoire.
Yeah, I just discovered his channel. The first video I saw of him was the Clair de Lune video, so I thought "Ah, let's see his latest video" *and I discover he has a beard now*
I have heard quite a lot of various theremin artists old and new but this guy... I don't know, he might be the best theremin artist in history. One of the very best for sure! Probably Leon Theremin himself would have been thrilled by this performance.
@@huh736 mate, you know Carolina Eyck is the one who literally invented the technique Grégoire Blanc is using ? some people can use it better than her of course, the best performance doesn't belong to the inventor, but we need to give credit to the inventor anyway
I'll be honest, when I saw the title I thought "no way"! I didn't believe those triplets would be feasible or sound clear and accurate enough on the theremin, and I feared you'd just have to simplify the music. But sure enough you've done an astonishing job. The instrument's versatility in your hands is simply stunning.
When the theremin is in it super range, it sounds like a woman singing opera. && it’s mid range gives slight violin vibes. I love it’s sound really. && your makeshift vibrato is so slick man.
Indeed, and it only goes full synth in the lower registers, quite a beautiful instrument, and to think it's so incredibly old and made by a Soviet radio scientist!
ohmygosh when i was listening to your clair de lune video last night i was hoping for you to upload arabesque .. LITERALLY JUST A NIGHT BEFORE YOU UPLOADED THIS MA’AM IM SCARED
Amazing ! It’s been a very long time I had this piece in mind. But it was sooo difficult to play it well on the theremin and make it sound elegant - and on pitch of course… I couldn’t have achieved this some years ago. Finally I just reconsidered this last weekend as I was looking for a piece to play on theremin and piano. It was fun also to make the video-editing: since my weird rendition of Halvorsen’s Passacaglia I’ve never been through such a big work... And yes, I played the piano as well - quite challenging as I’m only a side-hobbyist of this instrument… I’m glad you liked it anyway ;)
but guys... do y’all know how seriously hard this is and how talented he is??? he is basically pulling sound out from the air like, frets/keys/valves/strings who??
Dr. Siracha -Theremin is probably the only instrument (including voice) I know that you don’t touch to produce a sound. That makes it a little bit harder, in my opinion, to feel how your movements affect the sound. When I play, I can feel how my hand moves on a vibrating string to create higher or lower pitch (by feeling string tension). I can feel larger vibrations against my fingers when I bow louder. I can feel resistance, stops, starts, bounces, smoothness, etc. Touch helps a lot when playing an instrument, and going without when making music it takes a little of our intuition away. Theremin must rely a good deal on having a good ear. If you mean getting good at an instrument requires the same kind of work ethic across the board... I guess. Same with a lot of skills.
Sarah Rachel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LYSGTkNtazo.html it was harder before this girl created the 13 hand positions I think it is. You just have to tune it to your surroundings and have muscle memory so it is hard but when you get used to it I imagine learning it is like learning any other instrument. The hand positions are octaves.
Ooooooh! There's actually a reason Debussy sounds like hisaishi, the composer for most of the Ghibli films, and sideways does an excellent video on the topic, but basically it's bc hisaishi used traditional Japanese tetrachords which are similar to the pentatonic and whole tone scales used by Debussy!
Wow this arrangement is absolutely beautiful! I love the combination of piano and theremin. It's like the theremin would sing. The end was so satisfying because I noticed the typewriter and got excited as it was in the end scene. I have to thank you for uploading this!
I’ve always been fascinated by the Theremin as an amazingly expressive instrument but wrongly thought it could not be played with precision. I’ve watched several of your videos now and every single time I marvel at your control. I especially appreciate your ability to modulate the level of attack and decay to bring out a character I did not know was possible with a Theremin. Bravo and thank you! 👏
I don't know why I heard this rendition it always make me cry a little. To put you in context my girfriend always said that I never cry and should do to it more. Maybe I'll listen this song more. Great rendition!
I used this vid to introduce my 81 yr old mom to this strange instrument. She was very impressed by both the theremin and your overall musical talent. Greetings from Curaçao 🇨🇼
Oh, this is beautiful. The Arabesque No. 1 holds a special place in my heart, as have you come to share a similar place as my new found friend and fellow musician. God bless you!
Everything in this video's so stylish. A beautiful man playing wonderful music by a great composer, the old typewriter, an old Golf outside the window. P.e.r.f.e.c.t....
Growing up in Miami, the local Museum of Science sponsored a television series called "Star Gazer". Hosted by the planetarium director, Jack Horkheimer, this was the theme song. I have to believe that Jack would have truly loved this performance on the theremin.
So incredible. The absolute unwavering precision that you have to have is bonkers. Not to mention the artistry and beauty that you can’t get from practice. You are a blessing to the world. Never stop ❤️
I wouldn’t know how to express how much raw emotion I felt in your performance. This was truly a gift to be able to experience listening to your music, especially in the hands of Debussy. I feel wondrously fulfilled.
It sounds like an Angelic piece already, This made it even more beautiful! I figured to myself when I listen to theramin covers, it kinda gives off an Underwater vibe for me.
