Therewolf Media - “Your Turn to Lie” | Sou Hiyori VS Kokichi Oma 

Hi! Commissioner here. Firstly, Therewolf did an AMAZING job with this track. These two are characters I really love and I love the matchup as well. But, obviously the glaring question is “Why this matchup?” Due to their characters and also how there is another your turn to die character that seems to fit Kokichi much better. I did think about just leaving it and not talking about why I prefer this idea to the more popular one, but this is also the only time this matchup will be in the spotlight of the wider vs community so I figured i’d share why I like it so much. This will also be suuper long so apologies for dumping an essay on you lol In order to explain i have to go into spoilers a lot, so massive spoilers for Your Turn To Die chapter 3 and Danganronpa v3 below for those who need it This Matchup refers to Kokichi Vs Midori (who i call sou). I prefer Kokichi Vs Sou to Kokichi Vs Shin. Now I might get angry men with pitchforks at my doorstep for saying that, but I'll explain. Firstly, connections: Two male characters who appear as antagonistic figures in visual novel games, despite not being the overarching antagonists They participate in killing games, of which involve at least two people dying, one of which will be decided after a trial is held where the one who has been voted the most out of the group of participants. In these trials, there will be specific individual(s) with certain roles (The Blackened and Sacrifice, Keymaster and Sage) which are decided before the trial starts, in which the outcome of the trial will end differently depending on if the person voted is one of those roles. Both the main characters end up tackling these trials via presenting evidence and taking other people’s arguments in order to pit them up against other people’s arguments These killing games are mediated by inhuman characters which are horrific versions of toys (Monokuma being a teddy bear and The Dolls) of which have very advanced AI Both of the killing games they participate in have similar members, such as a detective who has stopped doing detective work due to trauma relating to it (Shuichi Saihara and Keiji Shinogi) - a main character who had their best friend (and potential crush) die after the first trial (Shuichi Saihara having Kaede Akamatsu die and Sara Chidouin having Joe Tazuna die) - an eccentric scientist with adult themes (Miu Iruma being lewd and Kazumi Mishima being a heavy smoker) - a quiet, serious character who dies in chapter 1, however turned out to be super significant to the plot which is discovered after their deaths, having ties to those who set up the killing game (Rantaro Amani and Kai Satou) - a very skilled artist who ends up being a bit selfish in the end, and end up dying (Angie Yonaga and Nao Egokoro) - a non human character that has advanced ai (K1-BO and literally any of the dolls) - a naïve best friend to the main character, who cheers everyone up in their naivety but ends up dying (Kaito Momota and Joe Tazuna) - a loveable murderer (Maki Harukawa and Alice Yabusame) - an ex-sportsman (Ryoma Hoshi and Q-taro Burgerberg) They are both a part of evil organizations (D.I.C.E and ASU-NARO) They are both two of the most cunning people in their worlds and do some of the most vile things within their worlds, known for constantly lying and manipulating numerous people They both wear scarfs They are both the de facto leader of some kind (Kokichi being a Supreme Leader and Sou being the Floor Master) Both of their pasts are shrouded in mystery, only having small snippets actually confirmed about it Both die in a situation where they almost intentionally kill themselves while involving another member of the killing game, but contrast as it was always a part of Kokichi's plan to die and have Kaito survive while Sou intended for Gin to die, however ended with him being the victim instead Both of their games also came out in 2017 Firstly, yes a lot of these apply to Shin Vs Kokichi, but not all - so right off the bat, Kokichi Vs Shin has less connections - with Kokichi Vs Sou having all of the connections they do and more But what about the point of their characters and personalities? Sou is pure evil, while Kokichi is very complex with his motives and actions, so this matchup is trash!!1!!1! Don’t get me wrong, Shin fits Kokichi’s personality and morals much better than Sou - which is why I still like Shin for Kokichi. But to say the entire matchup sucks because Kokichi and Sou aren’t the EXACT same or don’t fill the same roles is really lame to me. And beside, another reason why i prefer Sou over Shin for Kokichi is the fight interaction Shin Vs Kokichi’s fight interaction is pretty simple, they both attend trials and try to get each other voted to die. But honestly, other matchups do this much, much better. Sara Vs Hajime for one, and hell - Shin has a better opponent within danganronpa for this fight interaction as well, the Ultimate Imposter. This works better because it focuses a lot more on their characters and personalities in how they contrast. They both pretend to be other people, yet in contrasting ways. (note, this matchup has soooo many connections, but i am already pushing the character limit on a youtube comment so i’ll leave it for now). This lends itself well to showing off their personalities, and also seeing their facades break and shatter as they become more and more desperate. Meanwhile, Kokichi Vs Shin is just “they both lie all the time across the trial”. By comparison, Kokichi Vs Sou is much more interesting. Kokichi’s goal was to beat the mastermind of his killing game, so having him against another death game mastermind is a good start already. Kokichi would be subjugated to a death game set up by Sou, with them both trying to kill each other, trying to outsmart the other. At first, Sou would just see Kokichi as just another competitor, and overtime would grow more irritated, yet intrigued by him and his antics. Similar to Your Turn To Die, Sou would show up every now and again to taunt, and potentially try to kill Kokichi during the game, and you can have a cool, yet kind of funny moment where Kokichi instantly turns the tables on Sou, despite Sou being the one who initiates the confrontation. Eventually, it would end with one last main game, with both Sou and Kokichi having moments to big brain the other. Regardless of who wins, you can have the loser still have a massive impact in the story of the fight. If Sou wins, Kokichi could put him in such a position where he is almost guaranteed to lose to the other participants - or at least put Sou in a very tough spot. Meanwhile, if Kokichi wins it would cause ASU-NARO to focus on Kokichi’s actions, and try even harder to induce despair and agony among the participants. These endings are another thing that Shin Vs Kokichi lacks, which is another point to Sou Vs Kokichi. Their deaths also contrast in entertaining ways. If Sou wins, then Kokichi would die laughing maniacally. If that is a lie to himself to cope with his own death, or his own insanity would be unclear to the other participants, keeping in line with Kokichi’s characters. Meanwhile, if Kokichi wins, Sou would be panicking, his confident and sadistic demeanor braking, as he screams for his life - representing Sou’s fear of death and also giving an entertaining and satisfying win. One last time, I am NOT saying Kokichi and Sou are the exact same with personality and purpose as characters, that better fits Shin. But, Kokichi Vs Sou has more connections, and a much better fight interaction that other matchups cannot replicate, while Shin Vs Kokichi’s does. And again, just because a character isn’t the exact same, or the exact opposite from another, doesn’t mean a matchup cannot work. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk lmao Other Stuff: (the tracks used as references are: Madman, REAL FICTION, Hope Searching, Wonderful Story and Unpleasant Wind) I also considered the track name “A Madman’s Harmony” which i think is also really cool, as it plays into the name of Sou’s ost, and the full Danganronpa v3 title, but i ultimately decided “Your Turn to Lie” simply because not only did it also work, but it sounded cooler in my opinion

Ok, you have to appreciate that contrast of Danganronpa’s pink blood with normal blood, alongside it matching the characters colors schemes.

This matchup can be described simply with this one sentence: "Liar liar, pants on fire."

This would be more of a battle of wits and words than anything else. One lies to save his friends, even if it means becoming the bad guy to do so. The other lies to bring harm, a wolf in sheep's clothing waiting for the perfect opportunity to bite. In this battle between liars, who would walk away? Who knows? It could just be a lie.

Characters who are good at being liars duke it out

Kokichi:"Can you predict my next move. Knock off rantaro~" Sou: " Only if you have one, Kokichi." Kokichi Ouma, described by Shuichi Saihara as "the human embodiment of a lie," is a schemer who compulsively lies and manipulates. Despite his intelligence, Kokichi is immature and often pesters others. His villainous persona includes teasing and harassing classmates, manipulating trials, and enjoying others' suffering. However, he shows rare compassion, such as expressing anger towards those enjoying the Killing Game. Kokichi hates the Killing Game and seeks to end it, even at great personal cost. Distrustful and paranoid, he hoards evidence and employs cruel measures for cooperation. His lying makes it impossible for others to trust him, leading to his isolation. Sou, initially wary and among the last to introduce himself, appeared kind and friendly, claiming to want independence from his parents. However, during the First Main Game, he reveals his true manipulative and cunning nature, using others for his survival, even manipulating Kanna Kizuchi. By the second Main Game, his goal shifts to ensuring Kanna's survival, showcasing a complex, evolving character. I believe that sou is more strategic and thinking and kokichi more cautic and. Manipulating i believe kokichi has the lead because sou tends to have his moves strategically made but kokichi. Is more adaptaptive

Composition The track "Blossomed" is a Progressive rock with video game chiptune elements. The main theme is a mix of the Cave Theme from Super Mario Bros. 2, Peach's first playable game, and Little Big Planet from Sonic CD, Amy's very first appearance. There are a few cues from certain soundtracks and songs: The Castle Theme from Mario 64, Grand Metropolis from Sonic Heroes, and the main theme from Mario & Sonic and the Olympic Games for the finale. Title The title is a pun relating to real peach blossoms and blossoming roses, most importantly, it describes how they've grown from damsels in distress to capable playable characters. And character development with Peach becoming more independent and Amy wanting to help others with her love, even though this means spending time away from Sonic Cover Art The cover art is a silhouette of Amy's head wearing Peach's crown (similar to their emblems/logo from the Olympic Games series), that's underneath an open parasol while it's raining petals, with Amy's dress having wings from Emperess Peach's strike, holding the Piko Piko Hammer. And below is Peach's Castle in the setting of Green Hill.

Taking a small break from full reviews to avoid burnout (lots of new tracks + busy with stuff IRL = I'm losing motivation so I don't want to completely stop reviews which means break) so I'll keep this one to a general opinion of the track. Overall this track feels pretty similar in atmosphere to other Danganronpa tracks except without the higher and more intense segments. Or more accurately, with said segments being slowly and lesser intensity than its contemporaries. It's a very weird track in how it sounds but not necessarily in a bad way, it balances some of its weirder segments and tones with very catchy and enjoyable melodies and sounds as a whole that result in an unique song that isn't for everyone but that's definitely still enjoyable. I can't speak at all on if it fits the characters or not because I straight up don't know either (I mean, I only know Your Turn To Die by name and Danganronpa is a franchise I know and care so little about that the sheer amount of tracks it has is starting to give me Jojo's Syndrome with an overload of them) so I'm curious if fans of either find it to fit them altho given that I was able to recognize that Danganronpa feeling pretty much right away I assume yes (and given Therewolf's skill I don't doubt that he made it fitting). Either way while it's not my favorite track or anything like that it's still a solid, stand out and enjoyable song. Great job with this for sure.

This soundtrack is quite relaxing actually

The moment I saw the name of the track when I was looking on apple music, I thought that it had something to do with Kokichi. I guess that shows how much I like some of the characters in Danganronpa. Any death battle with the Ultimate Supreme Overlord is sure to be a fun time.
