Thanks, Andrea, for another very helpful review! I love that you have actually used your gear for several years before reviewing it. Anyway, I have the updated version of this mattress, the NeoAir XTherm NXT MAX, which, I read in the comments, you have now, too. I've used it on a few trips now, and while it's certainly warmer at 7.3 R-Value than my old Therm-a-Rest and REI inflatable pads, I've still been cold in my Ultralite 20F, even when using the XTherm in conjunction with a RidgeRest on top of it. One thing I'll mention is that, while the new version of the pad does still make the crunching sound (which doesn't bother me), the older one, in your video, sounds much more crunchy! I think that they had intended to improve that with the new version, and it looks like they did. However, I really like that your older version has a darker color on the bottom, which makes it easier to tell in low light which side goes up. Another thing is that the first time I inflated it, I got so frustrated with how long it took with the inflation bag that I finished just by blowing it up with my mouth. But when I got home, I got freaked out thinking that I had just introduced all kinds of bacterial moisture into it, so I tried to dry it out using some techniques that I read about online, inflating it and deflating it in the sun several times. Now, I only use the inflation bag, and I hang the mat with the valve open in my closet to dry when I am not using it. Finally, and unrelated, at 4:50, it looks like you are using a JetBoil, and you are using it inside your tent. I have never done that because I was afraid of accidents, but I have been tempted to do it many times. Or maybe you used it in the vestibule, then brought it in? Thanks again, Andrea!

Thank you. William, for another super detailed comment and for watching this video. It's viewers like you that make it all worth it :) Yes, I upgraded to the NXT as well, rather, I bought it for my husband, but basically, I'm using it all the time "for testing purposes!" :D I love it even more than the original version because inflating it is so much easier, although I did have my problems when I tried it for the first time, lol (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oFeAkDIyaeo.html) I'm surprised to read that you thought it was slow to inflate. The bag is pretty big, bigger than our lungs can hold air, so I think it's actually faster. As I stated in the video, I only use the bag to avoid mildew growth inside. I love the trick that you used to dry it out, though, and it may be worth creating a video about that! Thanks for the tip. A thing like that is hard to test if it actually works, but it makes a lot of sense. About the JetBoil in the tent, I use it inside in the winter when the weather is bad, but only because I know that the Hilleberg Nammatj 2GT has extremely good ventilation. I also know that boiling water with the Jetboil is super fast, so I don't have a problem doing it. It creates a good bit of moisture in the tent, of course, but if you have a blizzard raging outside, it's totally worth it :) You can check that out on this trip if you want (or any other winter trip on my channel) :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EYWMWavqhyU.html Thanks again for being so super active on my channel. Yeah, I didn't think about it until I saw a review for this mattress years ago before I bought mine, and you could see some mildew spots when they held it up in the light! And besides, the bag it comes with works so well, MUCH better than our lungs :) Thanks for watching my video!

Yeah, I was upset when I noticed that I threw the kit out, but it didn't matter in the end with the replacement that you can buy anywhere :D I tried to buy the same pad as you did just before we moved to California (Oregon has no sales tax!!), but REI didn't have any in stock. I took a new Sea to Summit Extreme to Argentina. Failed on me after 3 weeks in spite of it never being in contact with the ground. Now using a dense foam mattress, 3" thick. It's heavy and bulky, but I'm leary about air mattresses now. But if I do go back it will be this one, or the new version. Good info!

Thanks for watching my video :) My very first mattress was foam as well, but pretty thin and uncomfortable. It’s a good feeling to know that it will always work for you, that you can’t puncture it, but the weight, size, and comfort of this Therm-A-Rest is hard to beat. I never take it out of the tent to avoid any problems with it, but it’s just such a great one the it’s worth taking a little extra care.
@coke0drinker

mine had a leak, couldn't find it using alcohol or bathtub submersion. Had to re-pump after a few hours on a long trip. Good thing about the warranty. If they can't find leak, they will give you a new one. Otherwise, they will repair for a reasonable fee, though most people can repair themselves
@adventuresandreams
@adventuresandreams Год назад
Thanks for the super useful tip about the warranty, Gerry. I actually don't even remember how long it is good for, but I will do the test very soon to find out where my leak comes from, and if I can't find it, I'll contact the company. From what you say, they seem to be really good about repairing or replacing the mattress. That would be so great. The leak is no big deal if I'm just staying somewhere for one night, but every multi-day trip requires daily refilling.

Thanks for the review! This helped me make my decision to go with the XTherm NXT MAX Large instead of the XLite. The more durable bottom you mentioned was something I was looking at, but you mentioning that you use it in the summer without issue, and the side sleeping aspect very much convinced me. They say the NXT quiets the crinkles, so let's hope the bears won't think anyone has a bag of chips in my tent! Happy trails!

Thanks so much for watching my video and for your comments. You cannot go wrong with this mattress. It's just such a great quality. If you do buy the NXT, I'd be very curious to hear what you think of it and if the crinkles do stop. :)

@@adventuresandreams The XTherm NXT MAX arrived, and I deployed it for a test sleep. It's remarkably comfortable, especially when stacked atop a closed cell foam mat! There are still crinkles, but nothing obtrusive. If it was a Sun Chips bag before, now it is more like the sound of a very thin grocery bag at worst. I'm impressed with the thickness of the bottom fabric, it seems very durable. Hoping to have some adventures with it soon! ^-^

@@SilencedMi5 Thanks for updating me. I'm so glad you got your mattress and it's working out well. It will be with you for many years, I'm sure. Those really are the most comfortable pads ever for their size and weight. I'm also happy to hear that they reduced the crinkling noise. Did it come with an airbag and patch kit as well? I'm looking for excuses to buy it, but the other one is still so good and probably will be for a very long time.
@SilencedMi5
@SilencedMi5 Год назад
@@adventuresandreams it did come with the patch kit and air bag, as well as an additional stuff sack (air bag functions as a drawstring bag too!). If you were able to repair your current pad, I think it's worth waiting for the NXT generation to go on sale since it cost about $300 all in for the Large size MAX while the previous model can be had for closer to $200 brand new. But, if those phantom holes are still causing you trouble... go for it!
@adventuresandreams
@adventuresandreams Год назад
@@SilencedMi5 The leak is so minor that I haven't even tried to find it. It's really only a problem on multiday trips when it's noticeable that I'm losing a bit of air.:D Well, enjoy your new pad. I'm curious how it works in the tent with the intake valve on the side instead of the top. Space is always limited in the tent, so I can see that being a bit more complicated than having the airbag on top of the mattress to fill it.

I got mine around the same time and it's the most comfortable mat I've ever used. I also got the Max for the maximum coverage for winter and folks need to make sure it's not too long for the tents they plan to use. Mine hasn't developed any leaks but that has to be luck because although I took care of it as much as I reasonable could it has been well used so I would not have been shocked by a leak at this point. Some might balk at the price but spread out over the 6 + years I've had mine it has been well worth it. The only thing that has bugged me about it is the valve sticking up(although it does make it easier to blowup in the tent). I seen the newer ones have the valve positioned on the edge so when it comes time to replace I will get the new one(I'm sure I'll have an issue with the new valve placement then...lol). It is an excellent pad. Thanks
@adventuresandreams
@adventuresandreams Год назад
It’s really worth every penny. It’s just unbelievable how warm it is even on the coldest of winter trips. The valve sticking up has never bothered me. It actually made it easier to adjust the air pressure a bit if I filled it too much, and deflating it while still on it is easy as well. On the other side, I saw a pretty cool air bag that they sell for the new one that seems to attach to the valve easily. I’ll have to check it out in person. But the way the video looked, you would need a good bit of space behind the mattress to sit down that bag on the tent floor to use it properly, while having the valve on the top always gives you plenty of room. Well, I know I’ll buy the new one if I need to replace mine at one point. This sleeping pad really is hard to beat. :)

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm Leaks out the WingLock Valve /// I got a new one and does the same! slow leak.. Test your Valve by using a bowl or pool or anything that you can get the Valve underwater, test closed and open and see if your mat does leak before you go on the trail.. I even pop the top off and i was surprised it does not seat down to the rubber gasket! This would be easy fix for them, they just need the inside of the cap to have the round plastic under the cap to set more into the Tube around the rubber seal.. I do love this mat! But i wont ever use it on Hiking trip ever! I hope none of you have this same problem, no way to stop the leak, when it not coming from the mat it self.

@@adventuresandreams I will let you know, very sad about this, I get the feeling that somehow this mat has somehow been made with a flaw? Even after i bought a new Valve for the Mat, it still allows a slow leak from under the cap and it is closed! I have pool check for all leaks and only leak is from the black cap! When the air is up and the mat is full air, it is best sleep ever! After sleeping it hard to love it when you wake up to very low amount of air in the pad. The leak does not come from the Insert circle with the twist on and off air supply.. Pumping in the air is a little bit more tricky than with the new style, though. I have to admit. I pump for a while and test how firm it feels with my hand. I usually go on until it's pretty firm because when closing up the valve, it usually loses a bit of air again. I put a thumb on top of the valve with the bag still attached. I basically press the fabric onto the valve so I can get a quick seal. Then I turn the valve with the bag until it feels like it's closed. Then I quickly take off the bag and tighten the valve even more. It may take a couple more pumps if you didn't seal it right. This still happens to me as well, lol. The sleeping bag also makes a difference, though, and even the way you sleep in it. Some people don't use the hood, for instance. I also wear a hat when it's colder. I used to also turn to my side with the sleeping bag, exposing the less insulated back to the cold air. All those things could also be a factor in feeling cold. @@texmexia49 That's too bad with your zipper adventure! Otherwise, sleeping bags with a hood might be a bit warmer, but it seems like you have great gear for sure. It's. tricky to give you the right recommendation. I've never backpacked a super long distance, but you might be out for many days at the time, so every bit of extra weight counts. On the other hand, if you do feel cold when it gets down to the 20s and 30s, then this sleeping pad is well worth the extra weight. Hmmm. If you are able to buy it, I would say that you can get away with your current sleeping pad on most of your trips, but when you expect some nights to be cold, I would take the warmer sleeping pad to be sure. Me, I just use it all the time, in the summer and in the winter, but I'm slightly less concerned with weight since I don't travel too far each day.
