In this Physics video lecture in Hindi for class 11 we explained thermal expansion of solids and different coefficients of thermal expansion. We also derived the formula for different coefficients. Thermal expansion in solids is of three kinds, viz., linear thermal expansion, area or superficial thermal expansion and volume or cubical thermal expansion. Similarly, coefficient of thermal expansion in solids are also of three types, viz., coefficient of linear thermal expansion, coefficient of superficial thermal expansion and coefficient of cubical thermal expansion.
Definitions of different coefficients of thermal expansion :-
Coefficient of linear thermal expansion : It is the change in length per unit length per unit change in temperature. It is denoted by α.
Coefficient of superficial thermal expansion : It is the change in area per unit area per unit change in temperature. It is denoted by β.
Coefficient of cubical thermal expansion : It is the change in volume per unit volume per unit change in temperature. It is denoted by γ.
These coefficients have elegant relation.
α = β/2 = γ/3
