This video was a revelation. To do the foundation stitch with the tail is something I had never seen before, and the thermal stitch is just great, so useful. The strap I made looks really good. You explain it really well - thanks for this video!
Over the years I have ruined tops from the metal buttons on my shorts or trousers. The metal buttons under my tops rub on the worktop. I have made myself a belt using your thermal stitch. No more ruined clothes.
I don't know if one person can be credited with this stitch. I came up with it on my own many years ago. I thought I had invented it, but I found that it had already been used by others. At the time, none of the books or magazines I had showed the stitch. Now you can find it in books. It's a great stitch. I've used it many times over the years. Two things I found is that if you make straps as you do in this video, the strap has a lot of stretch in it. If you stitch more tightly, using a smaller hook than normal, there is less stretch. Also, this makes for a more durable strap. Another thing is that if you stitch the strap going vertically instead of horizontally as you do in the video, there is very little stretch. You simply start with a chain the lengths of the strap you want to make and then stitch your rows until you reach the width that you desire.
Just remember that if you do it by chaining the length of the strap, unless you use a sc foundation chain, it’s going to dig into your shoulder if you put anything heavy in your bag!
@@hayleycraig7250 That's good to know. Thanks. I think that is less of a problem if you crochet the entire strap more tightly than you would for afghans or wearables.
When a solution is needed people will solve it individually without each other knowing. 😊 Thanks for the tips and letting us know it's strong strap. I hate cords that dig into shoulders this stitch solves both problems.

The foundation cord blew my mind lol. I just started crocheting and I am finishing up a diagonal basket weave water bottle holder which may get quite heavy when full. I’m going to try this!

I used this on several purses. It’s great cause it stretches without loosing shape. I remember seeing the thermal stitch years ago, but didn’t realize that’s what I was doing! It was trial by error. Thanks I was looking for this because it can be very warm. It’s a bit dense and stiff. I wonder if there is a way to keep the warmth and texture while having a little more give. Is there a dc thermal stitch? I just found it. Thanks!!

does anyone know how to keep the sides straight? mine have the previous chain 1 at each end jutting out at the sides and idk how to stop it from happening
