Thermomate reached out to me to do a review on their Point of Use Hot Water Tank. In this video I do an unboxing, and perform a detail teardown of the unit showing how to perform maintenance such as replacing the heating element and/or anode rod. I intend to check on the condition of the anode rod in 6 months from the install date.
Any questions please let me know. A big thank you to Thermomate customer service for sending this unit to review!

In the deep past when I did commercial remodeling and upfits I sometimes got 5gal 120VAC standard W/H pullouts as that was enough capacity to pass code for hand-washing in non-habitable buildings. One element, slow recovery. And now you know why many budget restaurants never seem to have hot water at the bathroom sinks...

Yeah I have another video coming up that talks about the boss unit and within 8 months the anode rod was gone!! These small tanks don't last very long without constant maintenance.

Using the adjustable wrench instead of the 10 mm socket is my move 😅. Never can find that elusive 10mm when you need it! Good review of the product.

Seriously I was having a hard time finding that damn 10 mm because I'm working on another project in the garage ha

This is the only mini tank water heater I could find that does not self-destruct if it gets turned on without being filled with water. According to the manual if it is plugged in when empty or only partially full it will shut itself off and, according to the manual, you must press the reset button on the back of the unit to restart. This could be a big bonus when used in RV's where it might be empty for a variety of reasons.

I never looked at a schematic but it makes sense if the temperature internally gets too hot. The problem is if it keeps bouncing on that high temp limiter eventually something is going to break. Best to not chance it, fill up the water system before you hit the power switch!
@JDMech

@@Bassguitarist1985 Absolutely! But it's nice to know that if at some point the tank is empty and the power gets applied the hot water heater will not suffer catastrophic consequences.

Your videos on these mini hot water tanks are great! clear and concise, thank you. After owning both the Bosch and the Thermomate, do you have an opinion of comparison in quality or ease of maintenance? I Know I have high mineral content in my water so I will most likely burn through the anode like you. Are the anodes the same size or marginally different? Thank you in advance.

Hey thank you for watching! All these things are pretty much built the same. It's been about 8 months since installing this tank and I'm due for a flush just to inspect it. I'll definitely do a follow up video like I did with the Bosch. The anode rods are all the same size as far as I can tell. Picked one up on Amazon for $13. That way it'll be ready to go when I take out the heating element to inspect.

Great video, I have a question for you. I have the same tank in my food trailer, and stupid me I did not winterize it this season. I notice that when I went to turn on the water, there was no water coming out. I also noticed a leak where you took out the blue panel. Is there a way to fix this, or will I need a new tank.

The white tube that needs to be inspected yearly...what are indicators that show it needs to be changed?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 4 месяца назад
If it's heavily corroded is the indicator. The outward indicator that tells you the anode rod is gone not doing its job is when the tank starts leaking.

how much power will it take to heat up the water if you fill it with cold ?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 4 месяца назад
It's a 1500 w heating element. If you're talking about how many kilowatt hours it takes to heat up the water from cold tap to the set temperature that involves a little bit of math. 😁

The recovery rate is 6.8 GPH, meaning, if you get the 1.3 gallon version, it should be able to raise 30F water to 120F in about 12 minutes. A normal faucet will deliver around a gallon per minute, and you're unlikely to use only warm water when e.g. washing hands. Meaning, you can probably was hands for a couple of minutes or more before water gets cold.

Why are you replacing the Bosch? DOA?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 7 месяцев назад
No, I caught it just in time to replace the anode rod and I now have it as a spare. Apparently my water table is very high mineral content and I need to swap out the tanks every 8 months or so before I run into corrosion problems. So basically I'll swap out one so it's easy to deploy and then do the maintenance on the other one and store it until the other one is due for maintenance.

Do you not need to install the pressure relieve valve to the drain?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 5 месяцев назад
You don't need to no. However ideally you should route the valve through a pipe towards the ground so not scalding water sprays to the ground and not to the side.
@christianpedersen3237
@christianpedersen3237 4 месяца назад
@@Bassguitarist1985 How likely is that to happen under normal circumstances?
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 4 месяца назад
@@christianpedersen3237 not likely but possible. If the thermostat fails always keeping the element going, the hot water would cause an overpressure condition and open the valve.

@@Bassguitarist1985 plumbing of that thing is not trivial. I was going to install it under a kitchen sink, but you would want to avoid having waste water run back into the water heater. Ended up abandoning it.
