Jaiden, as an active fanfic writer and reader, definitly more people use it for fanfics, literally no one in real life refers to eyes as orbs but we still do it, or no one writes "the older raven-haired woman looked away because she could feel the heat on her cheeks" instead of "Jamie wasn't looking at Rosie because she was blushing", but we do so in the fanfic world
@astra8372
@astra8372 Год назад
If I was writing fanfictions I'd prefer to use my own vocabulary though, maybe I would use references from different sources but I feel like writing is kind of art, so I'd want to "paint" the text myself when possible and when appropriate. I'd try to not overdo it though, fanfictions are meant to be read and understood rather than giving headaches to both the writers and readers.

I know Im a little late, but teachers generally dont want you to write all fancy, they want content. But people are lazy and think that using a more expansive lexicon will make them sound better, as its easier to lengthen a sentence than do research another point about your topic. Most college profs I have had just wanted us to be as brief as possible. Strict word limits, make your statement, make your points, conclusion.

Yeah, I always found it funny that they give so many synomyms when you know that all of those words don't mean the same thing. They just mean similar things that greatly vary in context. Like, if I wanted to say I saw someone get decapitated in the street, sure I could say that they were executed, but why would I say they were "brought to the block"? That makes it sound like I was inviting a friend to a night club, not watching someone get brutally murdered. I don't know why I chose decapitation as my word choice, maybe I'm just tired and wanted a really extreme example for the sake of it, but wow, was that an easy one to nitpick at.

@DocuzanQuitomos
@DocuzanQuitomos 2 года назад
My god, this made me laugh a lot; it made me give up all the equanimity I could have had before watching it XD. And yeah, I had to write essays in flamboyant language (while all schools force you to do it, it's a bigger obligation when you study something related to communication :P). Fun fact, though: I never used Thesaurus for a couple of reasons (one that also addresses why its use sometimes makes no sense): 1) I had a dictionary of synonyms. Yep, that's an actual thing (Thesaurus it's an online version that doesn't use that name) and, the older the dictionary edition is, you can get access to even more outdated and fancy words. That's why now I have three (I have barely used since school... but this video has given me an excuse to revisit them). 2) With those essays we were expected not only to suffer to meet the requested elements of the paper (I want 5000 words, explaining if Jaiden Animations' speech favors functionality over structure, or structure over functionality... for tomorrow class) but also to use the terms we just saw in class (functionalism, structuralism, gongorism...) and that we were able to repeat them (we were expected to defend our view against all the other views). Choosing a random fancy word that we could not repeat most of the times backfired horribly. 3) Fancy words don't increase size. Sure, fancy words expand the text to new lines... but not always in word count (which is what we want, most of the times). and the video has an example of that: "penguins live in the cold" could be translated easily to "penguins inhabit the barren polar desert"; we went from five to six words. But what does the trick (and makes the text sounds even more ridiculous) is throwing additional ideas that have to make sense (penguins, one of the few birds that can't fly... or something like that XD). Yep, Thesaurus can give you words to "enrich" those ideas, but if you don't have a way to expand the concept (rather than the count of letters) you were lost. For example: "penguins, one of the few birds that can't fly..." could help me reach the 5k goal if I transform it to: "penguins, one of the most graceful and curious life forms to inhabit earth; one of the very few beings with wings on this planet that has not developed the skill of flying (as if this species was the subject of some curse of the Mother Nature we still ignore)...". We just went from 9 words in plain engish to an "embellished paragraph of almost 50 XD. That's why documentaries love this style: more extended ideas means more time, meaning you need less footage changes to illustrate whatever the voice is saying. But, there is a catch: while Thesaurus can help to increase the "cultured" sound of some words that could still be considered "simple", the list that sometimes the web provides has to be carefully considered because: 4) That a word in the suggested list is less used doesn't exactly mean it's an accurate "cultured" replacement :P. A good synonym dictionary, "curated" by a group of humans takes into account which words/phrases are more accurate replacements; not taking into account (or, should we say, notwithstanding... nah, four words resumed into one doesn't help with volume XD) if they are odd or not. That's why many works in the classroom were "burned": the elegant words were not only odd to say, but they were also oddly used. Another example happens in the video: the list of "questionable" synonyms is "passionate", "smirking, "ravenous", "eyes-widen", "grin-seductive"... all by Thesaurus suggestions XD. But (and that's what we did in the classroom) if you consider that "questionable" is an adjective (words are questionable), the words needed for replacing "questionable" should work as adjectives implying "something forbidden" and "smirking" or "eyes-widen" don't do the trick, at least not in the form the were suggested by Thesaurus. "Smirking words" or "words that are smirking" sounds as if the words were actually smiling to you... and that's not the idea (XD); fixing it to "words that make your smirk"... doesn't work either; while we like to think a smirk is the most "seductive" smile the face can throw (and seems that Thesaurus rescued that idea) what the emoji and the feeling actually want to say is "leering": an expression of lascivious interest and/or malicious intentions (and sounds more natural: "your leering words"). Using "Eyes-widen words" or "words are eyes-widen" makes it pretty evident: the Thesaurus suggestion should be "eyes-widenING", at least. But while "eyes wide open" are used for surprise... they can also mean illumination. "Looking for eyes-widening words" could be also for the teaching to become a better self; so, if we want to mean technically the opposite (the anon user wants its characters... to sin), we could try some other reactions like some "blushing" or "burning" words. Even bigger digress: If any M Fan Fiction writer ever comes this far on the text, this might be of use: one of the most quoted writing rules of Mark Twain is "Use the right word, not its second cousin" meaning that we should use the word that has the best effect for the goals of the text. "Upping" the language will kill the mood for those who just want the facts, not a suitable candidate for the Noble Prize in Literature :P. In the end, all this wall of text is in good fun (the video is years beyond good and evil) so I'll just end with this: Let's look for the most controversial, contentious, unsettling, disreputable, iffy, indecent, indelicate, titillating, risqué, prurient, salacious, off-color, heated, eager, ardent and feverish words Thesaurus has to offer and let's make a dictionary XD. A, pretty much, dumb effort, but now I'm wondering it there is such a specialized dictionary somewhere... I mean, I just found there are interesting publications like the Manual Of the Italian-Esquimo Conversations", the "Dictionary of One Letter Words" (which is said to have 232 pages) or a 1995 english-albanian dictionary of terms of the oil industry (beat that, Thesaurus :P).

Fun fact: “walk, think, say” are all native English words while their thesaurus counterparts used here are borrowed from other languages (likely Latin and French). Back in the day, a tooooon of French and Latin words were brought into the language but were originally only used by those of noble/educated status. Words that were often borrowed were used in fields like science and literature which commoners were unable to participate in. It’s kind of interesting that some of these borrowed words have become common but the native English words we’ve kept around still have that feeling of sounding blunt or dumbed down compared to their French/Latin-derived counterparts
@evanlight2550
@evanlight2550 3 года назад

Dearest Jaiden, Before all else I believe it should be stated that I have great appreciation and gain much delight from your illustrations. They contain within them charming imagery and reveal yourself to be exceptionally entertaining. Overall, they truly are exquisite. In regards for this piece, I perceive that the intended meaning for this could simply be stated as "Gobbledygook is pretentious". Regardless, this early gift in celebration of the day of my birth, though unintentional, is much appreciated. Stay vigilant and may God bless you on your journey through this life.

*Translation:* "Jaiden, Firstly I wanted to say I love your art. They're cute, funny, and original. In this video they're great for showing your point. Anyway, thanks for the early birthday gift. Keep up with the good work!" You're welcome.

+Magtone X Although lacking in some fields that which the original manuscript contained, your approach appears to be exceptionally similar in regards to its origin. Bravo!

I've never used it for an essay, but I have for writing song parodies. It helps when you need a rhyme with the right ending.

I think we are ment to use it to make the essay longer because usually there is a insane word count that you have to have in order for the teacher to accept it.

“Faster than a cheetah” A peregrine falcon? “More muscle bound than a gorilla” A peregrine falcon...? “More agile than a great white shark” Falcon...? (Bird pictures start showing up) “Swooping overhead” Definitely the peregrine falcon then “Feasting on our streets, the pigeon.” WHAT?!?!

just finished my bachelor's degree and this is so true... 90% of college is writing a bunch of "blah" non-stop that you don't really mean or care about... So glad it's over...
