Only recently found your channel, and for someone who's been struggling to ctually get sounds out of my head into a synth, your vids have been invaluable. Cheers from Texas
@@EDMTips Thanks for putting them out! And now, I'm not saying you should do the lead from Advanced by Marcell Woods...but you should totally do the Advanced lead from Marcell Woods 👀
I don't know if I get more pleasure out of applying what I learn in these videos... Or sharing in Will's emotional response to the iconic and nostalgic sounds from times gone by!
From what I can remember, Faithless used a string pizzicato sound for that riff. Probably layered though? Either way, you did a great job with them all. Impressive.
@@EDMTips Yeah he's right... Ever worked with ANA2? (new to your channel) Love to see some video about Aphex Twins sounds (they were quite pioneers right?)
True. Faitless used a rompler, the Roland JD990 with the famous Pizzcato based on strings You can find the same patch on few Roland rompler, D-50, serie JV/XV/JD, even on the Jupiter X.XM Enya use the same patch as well
Born Slippy is such an iconic lead sound. Your demo of the naked pad reminded me of how in their live shows, Rick would often vary the oscillator mix or the sustain for instance, opening it up toward the end of the track.
One thing to remember is that a lot of Insomnia's feel comes from the fact that Sister Bliss played it in by hand, thus giving very subtle and human variation of velocity and note length.
Very nice and I really liked the A&B patch, which i have tried to re-create... Two questions, first, I am using FL Studio 20, not Ableton, do you have any suggestions for doing the reverb sidechain if you are familiar with FL (no worries if not) and second, just wondering, noticed a key diff in what you had there with what is recorded (believe D Major for what is on Spotify of the actual song) and wondered if this was because you get flagged for being too close to the original if same key. Keep up the channel and thanks for doing these!
Thanks! It's all about breaking down your analysis into 3 or 4 constituent characteristics. If you take the time to write in the correct notes first, it takes pitch out of the equation, which simplifies things further
On that first patch if the sustain is all the way up it won't do anything if you turn down the decay. So basically you didn't change anything by doing that.
Following this video brought me to the idea of making my own version of "Adagio For Strings" because Tiesto's version is not my cup of coffee. So, I tried my very best in the free online DAW "BandLab". And I am really proud of the version. It's more atmospheric, more melodic. Nevertheless, I cannot release it due to licensing. But I had big fun working on the track. And the cause for this is the "Aha effect" that came with your video.
You can release it, of course. If you recreated it from scratch and not using samples, release it as a cover version with full credits to the composer.
@@level16gmbh83 Well, unfortunately not. The rights owner want me to pay a 3 digit amount so I can release it without payment chance and und this clause and that permission. No, simply no.
Will can you show us some more about the moxing process and uasking clashing frequencies please mate 🙏. Using Ozone pro is there a equivalent plugin in max for life ?
Your tutorials are best bro! I have learnt alot. Please show us how to make music like "Talamanca" , "James Wood" , "Vitodito" , "Alex H" . They make similar music. 💯⚘
No ofense but I don't really understand the purpose of reproducing a famous lead (Insomnia) that was part of a Roland synth preset, since your sound is quite different from the original. The midi notes are ok though :)
Great video Will, I just try to follow you on a saturday night with a beer and using ToneBoosters Flow Tones soft synth (also a top tip! Just voor €49!). In addition, I'm reading your e-book "Becoming a Music Making Machine" as part of the radio ready program.
WARNING: The sound of "Faithless - Insomnia" is COMPLETELY WRONG! It was not a Lead, but the "Pizzicato Sound" of the Roland JD-990 !!! Either you do things well or you don't do them!
You should rename this channel TranceTips. "EDM" implies you're actually covering all genres, bit tbh i hardly ever see anything from you even outside of four on the floor genres. Usually its trance or techno, very rarely theres some DNB tips, but like yo.... where is the rest of the Electronic Dance Music? Where is the halftime? Where is the trap? Where is the glitch hop? Where is the downtempo? Where is the dubstep? I get that DNB, Techno, and Trance have been having their moment the last couple years, but personally im not interested in learning to produce whats popular today. I'm interested in innovation, and I'd really like to see you training the artists of tomorrow rather than teaching people to do what everyone else is already doing today. And that means stepping outside of whats currently popular and covering every genre, even those you find less appealing and popular so the people watching can have exposure to other genres, techniques, and methods of accomplishing similar goals. Thats what I expect from a channel calling itself "EDMTips." Tips spanning ALL electronic dance music genres. I get that Will (and the others) has a lot of experience in trance, but this channel is large enough you can definitely, without question afford to hire producers in other EDM realms to explain the things your team can't. If I learned solely from your channel, I'd be basically incapable of making anything but trance, house, techno, and MAYBE some very generic DNB. And a probably majority percentage of people (at least in the US) looking for "EDM Tips" are specifically looking for info on other genres. So maybe you'll consider branching out a bit, i like your content, its just wayyyy too directed at towards house, trance, and techno to be called "EDMTips"
We need more of those last two, classic trance all the way. Have a happy and safe Christmas, thank you for keeping me sane in lockdown these last couple of years. All the very best, Gary
good stuff... but after watching i think you make it clear it’s all about the MIDI programming.. Other than that all patches are the same... unison, filter envelope, delay, verb and maybe a bit of distortion... the sound design part is quite easy compared to the composition side of things. Perhaps in a next tutorial should explain how you wrote the midi and why it makes sense and how it interacts with the rest of the track!
Oh yes sir!definately reminds me of the old days.I used good old octamed on an amiga computer.a whole 1.44mb of floppy disk space!then propellerheads rebirth with cubasis!been listening to me old 90s tapes for inspiration now.cheers
Hi Master !! I Will purchase your Becoming a Music Making Machine as a birthday present to myself !! The videos are the best I have seen , if I had watched 10 years ago right now I will Marco Carola jaja. Are you going to review equipment as well , I have a APC Key 25 and a MPK Mini MKII sadly running Live 11 on Windows but I7 with 16GB and a Focusrite 212.
Hello Will, big fan of yours.i wanted to ask you,if you would not bother to make a tutorial (or a paid private lession) about a lead sound i love very much.i am taking about the lead in v.f.m styles track haram.similar ones you find by producers like zwirek.are you able to recreate lead in that field?greetings
