Sports and Fore by Huey Lewis and the News Their early work was a little too 'new-wave' for my taste, but when 'Sports' came out in '83, I think they really came into their own - both commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, 'Fore', their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is 'Hip to Be Square', a song so catchy most people probably don't listen to the lyrics - but they should! Because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself!

@Yon358
@Yon358 Год назад
@@bencarlson4300 That's true but you could argue that Trent's career is also rich in experimenting with different styles and not staying with the same industrial metal vibes for next two decades. He's gone through synthpop, industrial rock/metal, funk, dark ambient, digital hardcore to even some kind of jazz on "Bad Witch". If there's one thing inherent in Trent's (not only NIN) career, that is stepping into discomfort and always trying something new, even if that's not what most of his fans would like. You could tell that is clearly a trait of Bowie's work too and it maybe kind of influence which Reznor got from him.

John Squire’s guitar work is unique and hypnotic, Mani’s bass playing sounds less like rock bass and really stands out on each track, and Reni’s drumming is immaculate, forward thinking and also inspired by Afro beat. 10/10s from the 80s for me include: Hounds of Love ( I agree with everything you said) Graceland - Paul Simon - Just gorgeous in every way, from the lyrics to the Afro beats and grooves, to the vocals, along with sounding unique in a time when "world music" was becoming popular and most of it sounded very generic, whereas Graceland is so catchy and fun. I'm sure I'm gonna get shit for this, but The Nylon Curtain by Billy Joel is an early 80s time capsule. It captures the Cold War nervousness we all felt, the helplessness we fellt while we watched the middle class fade away, the aftermath of Vietnam war, the pressure cooker of early 80s life and work. The lesser known tracks are the best ones: Laura, Surprises, She's Right On Time, Scandinavian Skies, and that stunning closer of Where's The Orchestra. Billy Joel and Phil Ramone played the studio like an instrument, but it never gets muddy or gross. In these songs and arrangements you can hear the nods to The Beatles without it being a parody. And Billy sings in 10 different voices on this record, choosing just the right subtle vocal shifts to be the perfect narrator for these songs. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. :-)

Black Eyed Peas opened with Erykah Badu filling in because they were between vocalists. Then instead of Gang Starr playing by themselves the Roots came out with them along with Erykah and gave us a two hour jam session. At one point Prince stuck his head out and gave us a big smile and everyone tried to get him to come out. We all wanted Purple Rain. Quest Love kept giving him a head nod to come but never did. I gotta give a shout-out to The Ascension by Glenn Branca , one the best experimental rock records, certainly the most interesting No Wave album that came out in the 80s ,from the guitar tone to the repetitive moments that seem to have had huge influence on Swans to the oddly transcendental feel of the final track, it's a 10 Oh ,i also gotta mention Disintegration by The Cure , easily the best goth album out there, and the psychedelic sound of it which was hugely influential on the dream pop and Shoegaze to come

Wonderful shout on _Remain on Light._ It's not their absolute pinnacle (that would be _Fear of Music_ ) but the percussion and tonal dynamism here are outstanding.

Totally agree with all of them, only felt like this list is missing Thriller or Bad from Michael Jackson. Not only iconic albums but very much influential in all of pop, rock and hip-hop culture. :)

I don't think they're perfect or 10/10s. Jackson has released some killer singles, but he's made some blander songs, mostly deep-cuts. Bad as a whole also just sounds _too_ 80s, you know? It's like a distillation of all the production values of 80s pop.

Yeah for sure, the only song I would argue that takes away from that 10/10 status would be “the girl is mine” with Paul McCartney - really felt like that was out of place

idk if he covers what he considers classic albums in these videos but he did do a review of thriller during classic week and if to him an album is considered a classic I can't imagine it not also being a 10/10

@@zachmacdonald1939 I don't think it takes away anything. It still has that smooth pop/R&B sound and feel that I connect synonymously with Thriller. It's closer to The Lady In My Life which is more ballad-y, but it is a song I still love as McCartney does well with Michael on it.

Thriller is a 9.99/10, drop that Paul McCartney song and it's perfect.

The Girl is Mine is the reason that Bad is the better album imo

Dude is picking some of the most popular albums for each decade, but if you look at his 10’s from the 2010s or 2020s, they’re more so underground with a few exceptions (TPAB especially). Is Fantano looking back at these artists with rose-colored glasses, or will history remember Spellling and Lingua Ignota among the greats like Kate Bush, Prince, etc.?

This is true, but there also has been a seismic shift in how people consume music since 2000. There are very few albums of the last 20 years that had the same universal impact of albums like Purple Rain, Thriller, or Nevermind because there isn't the same unified monoculture. Even TPAB didn't get radio play. Like maybe RAM, Discovery or MBTDF are up there in that conversation, but all of those really only had one hit.

I do think history will remember the great underground records of the '10s. A lot of classic albums were "underground" upon release, but later became commonplace. Meanwhile number 1 charting artists like "Captain and Tennile" can be all but forgotten decades later.
