A SCREWDRIVER! After all these years! I saw Skynyrd at RFK stadium in 1976 and was up close to the stage squinting with my eyes at Gary's SG on Freebird trying to figure out what the heck was stuck in the first fret, but with him moving around I couldn't get a good look at it. So a screwdriver?! This explains so much! lol...
How many times have they played this yet they sit down and show us pretenders how it's really done! Pure class and thanks GR for inspiring me to learn guitar.
Rip Gary Ronnie Steve Cassie Allen Leon Ean Billy Ed King and everyone else, now the original band is reunited once again up in heaven stay strong johnny and Rickey 💘💔
Most bands couldn’t make 3 guitars sound this amazing in a million years. Humble enough to leave the space and let the music breath. Hard pressed to find people that can do that anymore
Hell i bet u cant find 3 guitar players that can play together in one bandwe as a nation were so lucky to have these guys to come together and make some of the best music ever made so lucky they found one anotherfinding ppl that can play period is a gift from god and some ppl wonder if thier is a godskynard was living proof that yes thier is a god
You gotta wonder what Gary thinks when they play this song does he still feel the other guys around him or maybe even see them every once and a while , I get chills every time I hear this song I wasnt even thought of in 77 but damnit man i grew up in the wrong generation!
Yeah I have always wondered that too. It must feel weird to be the last survivor of the original band. He's outlived them all, his 2 best friends RVZ & Allen. Esp with Allen you could tell how close they were & how much they loved each other & Ronnie was their brother, father figure, mentor. If you think abt it though he has been with Ricky & JVZ for decades but the original guys were such magic together & just the times they struggled, I know they fought but that workin & strugglin to make it bonds you. I am glad that Ricky is honoring Allen the way he does & glad it is him carrying the torch since he was with them in the early days & how better to sing than Johnny. Whwn he 1st took over, he sounded so much like Ronnie but over the years he sounds less like that but my guess is way Johnny sounds today is very similar to the way Ronnie would sound today. Thanks for sharing this, very cool
I remember I was in grade school (1978) and at my first dance at my school. You waited for either freebird or stairway to heaven , the main songs that you wanted someone to ask you to dance to. The twoi songs were synonymous with....some sort of triumph .God love you always, lynrd skynrd ❤️
Allen Collins was a giant to me as a kid. His playing along with his spirit, will always be missed. And Ricki Medlocke as his placeholder is so fitting. Kudos Mr Gary Rossington. Well done sir.
Totally Agreed.!! RIP to them all, for giving us some Kick ass Music!! Would have loved to see how they all would be today Ripping out the same songs and more!!
i guess im randomly asking but does anybody know a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the password. I love any help you can offer me!
@Willie Vihaan thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I've always liked Ricky Medlocke because he has a sense of humor about himself and is relatable when talking about music,...he gets a kick out of what he does and it shows in this clip...no attitude, just straight up pickin...the kind of guy that you could have a beer with.. he still has a sense of wonder and appreciation in regards to what Allen Collins had created...
All them good ol boys from Jacksonville alot of people don't realize before Blackfoot Ricky jammed in the hell house with skynrd but never joined full time after Edd king Steve gains came in for street survivers I spelled that wrong folks let me Know if I'm wrong Rock on people rest in piece Ed king Allen Cassie Steve Ronnie Bob Billy loved ya miss ya
@lilnetty2 there is a great Blackfoot interview from 1981 on RU-vid with Ricky and Shorty that really shows how cool and down to earth they both are. What an interesting life
Allen wrote it all. I read that on the pronounced album, Allen is playing all the guitar parts, including the slide. It’s just what I read, don’t know if it’s fact.
@@ravencountry430 I believe Allen played the leads at the end all by himself, which only took one or two takes, but pretty sure Gary played the slide on original....though Allen wrote all the music.
I've noticed that Gary used to stutter a lot in interviews and get nervous every time he spoke, but overtime, his speaking skills got better. But then again, he always got his point across through his great guitar playing.
Rip Gary Ronnie Steve Cassie Billy Allen Ian Bob and Leon the original band is back together up in heaven, Rickey and Johnny will continue to carry on the legacy of lynyrd skynyrd. 😢🙏
For a non-musician type, I really enjoyed actually getting to see and hear where each of the guitar parts are coming from. Just an incredibly listenable song, Freebird!
God Bless Ronnie, Allen, Ed, Billy Steve, Cassey, and all the Skynerd Family, you were all family, but we get to live in your memories, long live Lynerd Skynerd, we love you so much!
That was a kick in the pants!!! Gary said he didn't know why they called it the "Bolero' part. I believe they got that from Jeff Beck's Bolero. Jimmy Page also uses a similar riff.
" fuck yeah" best song ever. It makes me cry when I watch it in older clips. The whole crowd is in pure bliss. As close to God as you can get. I was lucky enough to see pre crash and post.
So much feeling and heart in every note and chord.... Today's songs do not bring the feeling and emotion from the soul that these guys are able to extract. At least from my heart. Keep on Keepin on fellas!
I Love these Guys, I'm right down the street from where it all started, on the westside of Jacksonville FL. I get goose bumps watching this video, watching Gary play and show how he did it, my ice cream just melted!
Wow, Ricki Medlock, holy $#!+, Train, Train, take me on out of this town, with his dad on the fiddle in the beginning, I used to wake up to this and have coffee & a j0!n+ on the way to work at 5 am. Damn good way to start the day.
I sure miss Stevie. One day I went to the hell house to pick him up. He said come on in I gotta do something. Everyone was working on a song and they dropped in a Cassette. Stevie picked up his guitar, and in 10-15 seconds, he was smoking the song. "That good?" Everyones jaw was dropping.. "Ah yeah, wow" "Ok See ya at rehearsal" and we took off to go fishing. I don't think he got the credit he deserved. AWESOME GUITARIST and a good singer
I saw them in concert in Indianapolis about ten months before the plane crash. I was probably 15 or 16. Allen Collins and Steve Gains were truly awesome guitarists.
I can relate to Gary on his inventing his way of using the screw driver for his oun style and technology on his axe inventing different then anyone else that was pretty good 👍
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1999. I was sitting five rows back and dead center from the stage. After they finished playing Free Bird, Gary Rossington threw his Gibson Guitar into the audience. The Guitar landed directly into the arms of a guy sitting directly in front of me. We both caught a part of the Guitar, but because he had caught the majority of the Guitar and I only had my hands on the neck, I let go and congratulated him. To this day it bothers me on how close I came to catching and owning a Concert played Gary Rossington Guitar!!
Ricky is one of the greatest players still alive..i saw there last concert before they crashed they paid the night before at Lakeland civic Center and stayed another day to play again on the radio at school I heard they crashed.
So, so, so awesome mix of guitar and honesty of true artists. Much appreciation to listen to this brake down of they're interpretation of this song. So, so, amazing
Some don't know Ed played bass in the studio version of Freebird on the Pronounced album. Great guitarist. In his bio he stated that there was a little animosity toward him from other members because he was not a southern boy. Ed was from Glendale, CA.
@@randymcturnan2520 Ed also played bass on White Dove. I saw a clip that said Ed was brought into the band to play bass when Leon left for awhile. Leon came back and Ed moved to guitar. I'm glad Leon came back but Ed did a great job of playing bass.
U guys may think that is a long song because u have to play it but as vocalist and a fan of music you guy our ears dancing with joy all thru this whole song, how your fingers holding out.
They are a Skynrd tribute band... the real skynyrd band died w Van Zant.... love Rossington but he is the sole remaining member of the original line up today... I miss my favorite band but thankfully I have their music.. long live Skynyrd!!!!
Incredible video. Priceless. I'm an old man but hearing this song takes me back to high school. Also get a terrible sadness. Original band about all gone. Rest in Peace.
Man it good to here u guys and see you'll,and thank u for all that great music for all those years,no band every took the sound track from hanging with my friends and partying and have a grand ole time like u guys and made it sound so good,by just keep it real and simple I love all your songs but curtis Lowe is one when I sing along I almost crying at the end of it,thank you,can I here that freebird solo one more time...hah hah...piece.
