My wife bought me a Duo Sonic as my first electric guitar almost exactly a year ago. I had just accepted a new job after having tremendous struggles with my previous one, and she got it for me as a thank you for pushing through and finding a better job/situation. For that reason I will never ever get rid of the guitar because of its sentimental value, but it’s also just an amazing instrument. The 24” scale length plays incredibly fast and smooth, and the pickups sound fantastic. I initially thought it felt like a perfect blend of strat and tele (it’s a string through like a tele and the bridge pickup has some tele twang to it, the body is shaped like a strat, and the neck sounds more stratty), but after playing it over the past year I found that it definitely has its own distinct tonal flavor. Needless to say, it’s just fantastic I would highly recommend it to anyone!

@michael1
@michael1 2 месяца назад
I think the key is to focus on the noises coming out of the amp and let the fingers work it out for themselves. The other school of thought tends to focus entirely on the movement of the hands or pick minimising it (rick graham perhaps taking this to its limit) and the hands when they're playing look like they're very precise and doing the minimum movement and thus lots of fast notes can be created - especially if you use high gain, but the resulting sound is arguably not that great to listen to - it's not sloppy and uncoordinated but nevertheless its very monosyllabic. Maybe the best method of developing technique sits somewhere between the 2. The potential flaw with mostly being driven by the sounds you're creating and letting your arms and hands figure out how to play is that your technique may be less efficient and wastes energy or develops some bad habit like tension in your playing. to minimise that I'd suggest putting some focus making sure that you're relaxed and comfortable - like "that's the sound I want, now I want it to feel easy to play" - like Eddie with his big cheesy grin when he's playing something. But yeah, that would be my take. I doubt Chris has spent much time figuring out how to move his hands like that so if it looks complicated or difficult then it might be if you decided you were going to try and replicate it, but the thing to aim for is the tone and sound you want.

@@ViciousMaximus Yeah - a fixed bridge does nothing to counter the neck tension release when a string goes. I mean go and try it - downtune the low E until it's slack and see if the rest of the strings are still holding tune. They won't be. Unless they can defy physics.

Can definitely vouch for the Duo Sonic. I bought a H-S version about four years back and got a lot of fun out of it. Recently gave it to my 17yo as a first 'good' guitar and she loves it. Great for smaller hands with plenty of punch in the H (which also splits) while the S (neck) has a nice warmth without getting muddy.

That little 'Duo' is cool. It's always amazed me how we find tones we like, and how our taste changes over the years. I remember having one of those in the 60's, and selling it for $25!! LOL Another example is the Yamaha Revstar. I needed something with P90's. At the time the Yamaha Revstar is what people were talking, and raving about. I did my research, and ordered a black Standard with p90's. I waited 8 months to get one!! I'm still not sure why!?!? But I was very excited, there was so much good stuff being said about them! I unboxed it, played it for 10 days, a lot! Then sent it back. It was not my bag at all. It felt completely foreign to me. Maybe because I've played Gibson and Fender for 50 years? Now I've found an SG, w/p90's and a wrap tail bridge that I like!! They took the Yamaha back, no questions asked. Thanks, Peace.. --gary

I bought a Duo Sonic when they first came out with the one mentioned today. I had the PU's changed with a custom shop Duncan wound 55 Tele at the bridge and a 66 Rickenbacker scatter wound at the neck. It gives me the era Pete Townsend went between those 2 sounds. I was lucky the the women who wound Pete's PU's was still alive and working for Ric a few half days every week and she did my PU. She even had it shipped as a replacement part so I paid $75. I have the orange Duo with the maple fretboard. the pickguard is vintage plastic tortoise shell. The new tortoise shell is clear plastic with a photo of the old plastic. You can see the difference.

Around the one minute mark, you start to play a faster flurry of notes, I couldn’t quite tell if those were a mix of 16th note triplets or septuplets or other rhythmic subdivisions but I’m curious how you developed the skill to so tastefully switch into those faster passages that help build the energy of the solo. Are you aware of the subdivisions you’re playing or is it all by ear?

I picked up a Duo-Sonic like 2016 or so a bit after Fender did the Offset Series and It's been my go-to ever since. Mine seems to sit right between a Strat and a Tele, not doing either great but does both decently with a super simple layout. I also seem to get along way better with shorter scales so good to keep in mind if you don't.

The Duo Sonic is definitely one of my favourite guitars, so unique and easy to play! Curiously mine has the two pickups out of fase in the middle position, which was the result of swapping the original bridge pickup with a new ona with the "wrong" polarity. It's an odd sound and I was planning to correct it, but lately I got used to it and like it more and more, so I think I'll keep it!
