I've played for 15 years and I'm really impressed with your technique and generally how comfortable you are holding the guitar. 5 years really isn't a very long time, well done
dude I remember going into John's style 12 years ago and at that time he was kinda niche on the internet and there was only Yesyuta with JF's Style 1. And I was thinking like hey people why he's so overlooked. Well now so many peeps say he's so overrated and boy am I happy to see such comments online and with that so many channels play his stuff. Dream come true!
Hello again my dude! I’m the guy that said something about your vibrato on the RHCP Reddit. Couldn’t agree more with your comments on gear vs technique. I see so many guys with high dollar equipment, that are extremely mediocre players. You can sound amazing with a squier and a practice amp if you have the skill. John used a fender H.O.T. Practice amp for some of Blood Sugar. Gear definitely helps, but it is not the key to John’s sound, it’s in the hands.
I like your style. Well done. It's worth noting that the "extra notes" you're talking about are just the other notes in a minor scale (the pentatonic scale is basically a minor scale with less notes - although in application, it's its own animal :) ). From the way you're playing, it looks like you're playing the minor pentatonic on the bottom three strings and the minor scale on the top three(?)
if you crank your amp to the max while using the the wah and distortion, and play with your guitar pressed up against the speaker grill, the sound will "whistle" up and down depending on the wah pedal.
Hell yeah bruh. Good tips. This is actually a good vid to get the essence of John Frusciante. Take licks, take ideas, but at the end of the day have your own style. It's exciting and cool to play something note for note and get that lick right, but it's all about the moment and how you feel and what your fingers think is the best for the next phrase.
Thank you so much, this is truly a gold for me and many others lol ❤ I want to ask though, in the amp settings, you seem to crank all the lows with bass and depth, i know John's tone has lots of bass for that ''roundness'' but isn't 10 too much? I'm using NDSP plugins and i can't imagine how bassy they'd get with that setting haha. Although it just might be my setup too so yeah... thanks again!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I might have it cranked but it’s what John did- it really depends on the amp and speaker setup you have to tweak to yours ears haha
Really great info. The outro was insane, which was your process for making it? Did you just try things with the backing track and wrote it down note by note or did you just make some improv tries and went with the best? I just discovered your channel, you are killing it, I’m 100% subscribing
@@matimaurin thank you man I really appreciate that feedback. I honestly just improvised on the spot while trying to keep what I put in the video in mind to demonstrate it. Hope it helped! Cheers
Amazing video, very helpful!! Honestly any content you have about John's playing I'll be watching it! For example, I can easily do the Hendrix-grip F-chord shape, but I struggle to let the high E ring out bc my hand it muting it, so for songs like Dani California I have to do the traditions barre chord versions. Or for doing the A-chord shape, hitting the high E string while using your ring finger to play the G, B, and high E is tough. Or specifically the third chord in the chorus of Under The Bridge, how the hell does he play the top 4 strings without muting the others? Very niche questions but I figured it's worth a discussion, I'll be thinking of more as I keep practicing lol, keep up the good work bro!!
@@unreborn thanks for much for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it. I’ll definitely do more in the future and can touch base on some things you mentioned for sure. 🤘🏼
Thanks for this video, very informative, much appreciated. One question, how are you avoiding the massive volume jump when using the Ibanez V3 wah? Is it a modded version? Cheers.
@@RHCPDrumma Hey! My Wah isn’t modded no- the Jackhammer is compressing the signal so it stops the volume jump. It’s essential that the jackhammer comes after the Wah for it to help the volume jump. (Guitar>Wah>Jackhammer>Amp). Hope that helps!
hola lucas sos de argentina?, excelnte lo del jackhammer y gloria a dave simpson un genio , espero con ansias su subes un video pero referido a sus acordes y a sus tecnicas funk rock gracias !!
OD Setting, Gain in between 3-4, volume on max. Bass and treble at zero and I have the two last knobs in between 3/4 as well but you can play around with those for your own liking!
Just came across your channel and I'm a huge fan, thanks so much for the great content! Any chance you could do a similar video on John's funk/Jimi Hendrix style rhythm playing?
@@LucasRusso He is a massive influence, and I didn't even really get into him until he came out with "To listen to water for 10 days" and his acute ability to find chord changes that involve key changes, yet at the same time float between minor chords. Nobody had ever done that. Thats his "stamp" on the musical community. Minor to minor to minor, and its like "whoa" I never thought of that. Think about what the notes in your head are telling you. Always be willing to sound bad, always experiment.
I really do like your playing and you’ve made great progress for 5 years, but some constructive criticism for a lesson video… you gotta use more visual aids than just showing position 1 of minor pentatonic for a few seconds. Just show one for all the scales you used. That’s universally easier to digest than just saying “add the 6th fret b string..”
@@sabres0809 hey thanks for the feedback! Next time I’ll try creating a diagram of the shape on the fretboard and put it up on the screen. I appreciate it!
