** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
zetamath makes brilliant puzzles, often with original rulesets. Today's sudoku is one such innovation: it's called Nine Rooms and it seems daunting at first but it's actually fairly approachable and quite beautiful.
Play the puzzle at the following link:
sudokupad.app/38fLLNhq84
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Cells with a solid grey square contain an even digit. Cells with a solid grey circle contain an odd digit. The circle or pill in box N records the sum of all the digits within box N that are orthogonally adjacent to the digit N within the box. Two digit totals are read left to right, top to bottom. For example, the pill in box 6 contains the sum of each digit that is BOTH in box 6 and orthogonally adjacent to the 6 in box 6.

Really enjoyed this new rule set. What can’t you do with Sudoku! To think 10 or so years ago I was plugging away at your normal classic sudokus found in newspapers and enjoying that. I had no idea back then the wonderful world that was awaiting me in variant sudoku. All made possible by this brilliant channel.

36:00 🗨 "It's getting more difficult for this to be a 2" _Narrator:_ It has now become impossible for it _not_ to be a 2. That was a fun puzzle and an interesting ruleset to think about 👍🏻. Took me about 35 minutes - I went down the route of colouring all the cells that _couldn't_ be N to start with, I'm not saying it was the most efficient way to go about it but it helped me to remember where I had already ruled N out from being without having lots of corner marks getting in the way.

I _seem_ to remember the broadcasting of the first episode being disrupted by the assassination of JFK. Or did I imagine that? Something to do with the first episode being repeated the next week because of so many people following the dramatic news instead of watching it on first broadcast?

I've been watching you for several months now, and I must say it's an absolute joy each day. I'm used to it being called Number Place / NumPla (ナンプレ) instead, even though it does come from Japanese as suudoku 数独. But even with using the name Sudoku, I'm glad there's enough people that enjoy it internationally that this channel can exist. Your solves are always satisfying and friendly. In fact, your friendly attitude makes these videos even better to watch, and how you take time to connect with your viewers, explain the rules every video, and even go over important details (like "the secret") to always be welcoming to new viewers. I love how each solve begins with a hearty and warm, "Let's get cracking!" You really put out some incredible videos, and your joy is just so infectious. Please keep it up!

Thanks for sharing this. It was especially interesting to hear about "Number Place." I'd always been told Sudokus were Japanese in origin, and I'd assumed they were really old, too, like 19th century or earlier. So it seemed odd to me that the Japanese would call the puzzle by this strange English name. I looked it up and what a surprise! The version of Sudoku that we use today was developed in the U.S. (in the late '70s!) and was indeed called "Number Place." It didn't catch on, however, until the 80s, when a Japanese puzzle company picked it up and renamed it "Sudoku." The puzzles eventually became a sensation in Japan and then spread to the rest of the world, carrying the new name with it. The only issue was that in Japan, that original puzzle company also trademarked the name Sudoku! No one else was allowed to use it, so over there, Sudokus not made by that company are called by the original English name, now shortened to NumPla. I'm guessing a lot of other CtC diehards probably knew this history already, but I sure didn't.
@himura-miki
@himura-miki 6 месяцев назад
@@andrewbiliter6693 Honestly, I knew there was something about "sudoku" that meant that only a few could be called that, and that there was some legal reason for it not being called it, but even I didn't know the full history. To me and I assume many others, NumPla is just the name of the game. Very interesting! Also, unrelated, 19th century really isn't all that old. Short of about 400 years, I would say it's actually rather recent. This is something I enjoy as a culture shock, how the west views lengths of time.

I am claiming a result on this one. I tend to pause Simon so that when I cock it up, I can fast forward his faultless solution to the point at which my numbers went wrong. It only happened once in this puzzle and I hope that does not make me a bad person. I coloured orange to show where N could not be in each box and I used yellow to show that the circle box pencil marks were ranges and not pairs, eg 36 meant 3-4-5-6.

Ack, somehow I was doing just fine until found the correct cell for the 5 in Box 5 and knew the middle digit on the square had to be 6. Yet I was somehow starting my sum from 5 and saying the circle had to be 8 or 9, so the other adjacent digits had to be 1+2 or 1+3. Once I realized my sum had to start with 6, I was able to complete the puzzle. I didn't make that mistake for any other box except the central one!
@debrawilden1971
@debrawilden1971 6 месяцев назад
I think the example wording is very confusing and misleading--- '..the pill in box 6 contains the sum of each digit that is BOTH in box 6 and orthogonally adjacent to the 6 in box 6.' Since this indicated that we are to take BOTH, it would seem that this would include the sum of the digits in the box, which is 45, then add to it all the #s orthogonally adjacent to the 6 in box 6. It would have been better to indicate that the pill # is the sum of the orthogonally adjacent digits to 6 that are only in box 6. (As was expressed in the rules.)

If r7c2 was a 3, there would be a 12 pair in r8, breaking the pill in box 8.

I really appreciated that Dr Who turned into a woman, Jodie Whittaker, but not so much her short stay in the show.
