We've had a few requests to try this puzzle called BYO Arrows by Celery. Very few people seem to have found a logical way to solve it...
This is one of those wonderful sudokus that feels like an onion - you have to peel away its layers to discover its true nature. This is an absolutely exceptional creation.

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. A digit in a circle indicates exactly how many circles contain that digit. Additionally, circles function as the circles of an arrow. Draw arrows that move orthogonally from the circle such all arrows are 2 cells in length and cannot pass through other arrow cells or circles. Digits along an arrow must sum to the value in the attached circle. Cells containing given digits cannot be on an arrow.

Thanks for featuring this! Yes this is a hard puzzle lol. It took me a long time to get the circles in the grid in just the right spots such that you can fit all the arrows with no overlap and then have it all deducible. Hope it was enjoyable :)

Fascinating: to watch Simon make a discovery you would never see in a million years Frustrating: to witness Simon forget his own conclusions after about one minute Fun: once Simon makes´the same discovery again from scratch, to bet A) whether he will suddenly remember what he did before, and B) whether he will forget it again and discover it a third time 😅

Honestly I think this is why I love watching him and why I learn so much. He often ends up proving the same logic from 2 radically different directions. One of the logic routes is more intuitive to me and it's super helpful to learn other ways of coming to the same conclusion.

I always watch the video after I've done the puzzle, and spend the whole time berating Simon for taking ridiculous logic trains to prove naked singles. I'd like to claim Simon's reluctance to see what is right in front of his nose (because some other, more complicated path is available which is somehow obscuring his view) gives me an advantage over him at some level. The thing is though, for all his unnecessary diversions and blatant disregard for the bleeding obvious, he still finishes in half the time I take. That won't stop me from shouting at my lap top any time soon, mind you. It's all part of the fun. (Sorry Simon) :)

I think I found something that Simon missed... the thermo that Phistomefel is holding is wrogn, because it has a 9 in the bulb!

Congratulations. I'm not sure how you're defining "tricky", but I would say they have featured a lot of puzzles that could be described as such, and yet weren't nearly as hard as this one. 🙂👍

At the 1 hour mark when Simon decides to use the most ellaborate technique to count that he has four 6's in circles and needs two of the last three to be a 6, a classic Simon

classic. I took the other route and counted 5s instead, which created the same solution in Boxes 8 and 9. Either way works. But that 8 in Box 9 at the end was just staring at Simon, daring him to discover it. Given digits are his kryptonite.

He did the same thing after getting that not-a-6 deduction in box 4. It gave him 3 5's. There are 2 rows with 3 circles, so the other two 5's must live in those rows. This had me yelling at the screen for quite some time, lol. Along with not spotting the Xwing on 8's (row 1&9, col 1&5) a bit earlier.

I particularly liked how he thought it mattered how he paired his 5s and 6s up, because if they didn't see each other, then they couldn't be guaranteed to be a true 5-6 pair ... at least that's what I assume he was thinking 😂.

Right? R7C6 and R8C8 had to be the same digit because they both saw the other circle. So if you need two 6's and one 5 remaining, it's a fairly basic deduction. Then Simon does...something! Clever, but perhaps a bit more clever than it needed to be! :3

here’s a different way to start this: imagine 8 isn’t in the circles, then the solution can’t be unique because you could always swap all the 8s with all the 9s in the final grid… therefore 8 is in the circles, and the numbers must be 568 because of the given 4. i know some people don’t like uniqueness but this gets you off and running quick!

My line of reasoning for the same conclusion went like this: Suppose 8 isn't in the circles, 9 isn't either as Simon reasoned in the video. Then the circles are from 3,4,5,7. There are 19 circles each with a two cell arrow, none of which can contain either 8 or 9. 3x19=57, plus the three given digits gives 60, plus all the eights and nines gives 78, plus the two sevens we must place outside the circles and arrows gives 80, at most 7 of the sixes go inside the arrows, brings you to a total of 82. So there would not be enough room outside the arrows and circles in that scenario.

1:02:23 The "pairing up" thing is clever but feels like the simpler way to the same result is to count that there are four placed circled fives, so there's only one left to allocate across the three circled 56 pencil marks in boxes 8-9; therefore it must be in the cell that sees both the others to avoid trouble...

And it could have been done much earlier: as soon as the 8 in box 7 was placed, there were two circled 5/6 pairs in rows 1 and 7 and therefore box 9 must have a circled 6.

One of the most fascinating things about Simon's video is the way he copes with how complicated parts. It's almost like he makes all the simpler parts of the puzzle just as complicated so that every single step is complicated and therefore just as (not) easy as every other step. Genius! Just kidding, this was an incredible puzzle and a great solve! After half an hour of not getting the break in I was in awe watching your solution!

Currently at minute 25, so not sure how Simon solves the break in, but I think I have a proof for why 8 has to be circled (Spoilers) There are 81 squares in the grid. With 19 circles, there are 38 arrow cells, for a total of 57 cells involved in arrows/circles in one way or the other. This leaves only 24 cells not involved in arrows or circles. 3 are used by the given digits, and Simon has already proved 9 can't go in circles. They obviously can't go on arrows either, which means all 9 9s would be in the 24 other cells. Now there are only 12 available. If 8's weren't circled, then all 9 eights would also have to go into those other cells, as they couldnt go on arrows without getting a circle greater than 8, i.e. 9 which we already disproved. Now there are only 3 cells remaining. If we put 7s in circles that's fine, but by the rules we can only put 7 7s in a circle and the other two can't go on arrows since we're assuming the 8s are not in circles. These 2 sevens can take 2 of the remaining 3 unclaimed cells, but the problem comes when we look at 6s. You can't put 6s in circles because there's no way to make the total circled digits add to 19. You could put 7 6s on arrows (paired with 7 1s), but then you'd need to put the other 2 6s somewhere and you only have 1 square available. Therefore 8s must be circled.

This is very elegant if somewhat more complicated than the way Simon did it. Yet still less complicated than the approach I took which involved using the sum of the entire grid and working out that the one square not a 7, 8, 9, or in an arrow would have to be a 38 to make the math work 😂

My solution was: Each digit on an arrow is N instances of N value, so it's N squared. 3,4,5, and 7 squared is 99, so 38 tiles need to add to 99. Using the minimum remaining digits, 9 1s, 9 2s, 6 3s, 5 4s, 4 5s, and 5 6's is 115. Since 115 is greater than 99, 3,4,5,7 is not a viable solution for the arrows. Similar but kind of opposite from what you did.

That's exactly how I did it after spending the best part of an hour trying to disprove you could 'hide' non-arrowed 8s and 9s in the first 3 columns! It was quite a eureka moment.

Easier way to see the 5/6 pair logic at the 1 hour mark - you had 4 circled 5s, and needed exactly one more. That must be in both box 9 and row 7 because of the 56 pairs, so it must be in R7C9, because that's the only circle that's in both.

I notice something weird. If no 8 and no 9 are in circles, the puzzle may have two possible solutions as the 8ths and 9s and switch places.

I'm confused by this comment! I can't tell if you mean 'number' for 'no', or simply the word 'no', so I'll deal with each possibility. You can't put a 9 in a circle, because there's no disposition of 9s that allows a 9 in a circle in every box. Even if you could, you can't put both 9 and 8 in circles, because then the remaining count of circles is 2, and you can't put a 2 in a circle, because it would break the 2-cell orthogonal arrow rule. If instead you mean 'there are no 8s or 9s in circles anywhere', then you need to make a total of 19 from the digits 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and that will break because of the beautiful low digits logic. The numbers would have to be 3, 4, 5, 7 to make the total. Between the given 3s, the 3s in circles, and the 3s making up the 4 totals, all 3s are accounted for. That would mean all five 5 totals would be 14, but that requires far too many 1s: 3 for the 3 totals, 4 for the 4 totals, and 5 for the 5 totals. All of this proves that: 1. 9 cannot be in a circle; 2. 8 must be in a circle; and hence there is a unique solution. Simon of course explains all this logic in his solve.

Yes, you can use uniqueness to intuit that the circles must include 8s or 9s. You can have similar issues with sandwich, white-dot kropki, XV and various other rulesets whereby you need either at least one given digit or a combination of variants in order to give a unique solution.

​@rentalcustard They're saying that, once you know 9s aren't circled, another way to prove that 8s MUST be circled is by uniqueness. The only constraints on the finished grid are the circled digits, the arrows, and the given digits. If the highest circled digit was 7, there would be nothing at all specifying the positions of 8 and 9 in the finished puzzle. The given digits are only 3s and 4s; the circled digits would max out at 7; and the arrows for those circled digits obviously couldn't contain 8s or 9s on them since the maximum sum for the arrows would be 7 by that same circle logic. Since nothing would be specifying the positions of 8s and 9s, you would be unable to disambiguate them in the solution. Let's say you color coded them so one was red and the other was blue; you could arbitrarily make 8 red and 9 blue and the solution would work, or you could swap them and the solution would still work. If you were okay with using proof by uniqueness then this is an equally beautiful way to prove 8 must be circled imo.

Instead of all of the bifurcation around the 40-44 minute mark, you could have gotten the 8 in box 9 by using logic with the X-wing in columns 1 and 5.

I finished in 167 minutes. I thought I had figured out this puzzle and was cruising along, until I hit an impossibility in every direction. I had initially put in 3457 as my digits. I had ruled out 478 due to column 2 and completely forgot that 568 was a possibility. I wasn't happy with immediately jumping in to 568 being correct, though. I tried to see how it could fail from the start, but I couldn't find it. I gave up and started to watch the video. That was a difficult and quite clever break-in. If I thought about it in the right way, then maybe I could have seen it. I'm really disappointed that I couldn't find it. The rest of the puzzle went much more smoothly. Great Puzzle!

So sad that Simon neglects the Circle count after finding the 568s. You would have been able to distribute the 5s and 6s way earlyer if you thought about you can only have 5 5s in circles and where they have to live.

Definitely how to start was the problem here. I wasn't able to rule out 4 different digits in the circles, until your explanation made it seem extremely simple and worthy of self-chastisement, but after that I was able to progress slowly but surely. Nice puzzle.

I had a similar break-in, but I focused on 6s. If you have 7543 as your circled digits, then you have 19*3 = 57 cells in circles or in arrows, then you have 3 givens and 9 each of 8 and 9, giving 78 cells currently filled. You can only put 2 6s on 7 arrows, so you need to put 7 6s off the arrows, and now you have 85 digits, when there are only 81 cells!

36:30 At that point row 2 has the uncircled 8 in it (in box 2 or 3), so box 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 all have circled 8 in them. So box 9 has only one circle that can have an 8 in it; r8c7.

I was shouting "Box 9!" at you for ages after you'd restricted the missing 8 rows, the 8 was immediately placeable in box 9 - an 8 in R8C8 quickly breaks as it leads to no circled 8 in box 6 or box 4 Amazing solve other than you forgetting your own deductions about the missing 8 row when figuring which pattern of 8 placement was correct!

I lucked my way through the early stages by not noticing the multiple options. Then I gave up. Watching Simon it seems there were deliberately set to have multiple options for nearly every arrow all the way through, rather than it all just collapsing. A wonderful watch (and happy to admit beyond me currently!)

Much easier way to see the circled 8 in R8 C7 that he gets by checking all the possible configurations of 8's is to go back to his column logic from earlier: every column except column 3, 6, and 9 must have a circled 8 because those 3 columns can only contain 2 8's (because those 3 columns only have possible circled 8's in 2 rows, is the easier way to explain that), so you have an X-wing of 8's in rows 1 and 9 in columns 1 and 5, so the only place for the 8 in column 7 is row 8.

At 18:50, Simon is looking at rows 2 and 4 because only one of them can include an 8. He notices that the 8 options in box 9 are restricted to row 8. Later on, this possibility continued to elude him for the _longest_ time. It's so weird how you sometimes get a blind spot on a simple detail like this and it derails everything. It's happened to me too many times to count. (Yesterday, I mis-pencilled a cell early on and it derailed me for nearly an hour. I'd put in 1234 instead of 123. After finally spotting it, the completion of the puzzle took about 10 minutes. )

66:46 for me. I wasn't anywhere near as rigorous as Simon in proving that 8 had to appear in circles, but it felt very wrong to me to try to make arrows with lower numbers. Once the 8s were placed, there was a lot of staring at the puzzle to see how the arrows could be constructed, before I saw the interaction between box 4 and box 1, which led to an explosion of digits. I expected the puzzle to collapse from there, but there were still some really nice deductions required to fill it out. Really lovely stuff! Thanks Celery, and thanks to CtC for featuring the puzzle.

When I placed the 8s in my solve, I was pretty confident I'd found the only way of doing so. I coloured all 3 circled digits in box 1 and didn't find a way to place 8 of the bottom right digit in circles without breaking one of the others. But watching Simon's solve, I'm not so sure I didn't miss something!

The blue/yellow 8 around 42 minutes could be discovered more neatly using the x-wing of 8s in columns 1 and 5.

Wow! What an amazing puzzle. It took me well over 2 hours and I did have to check my progress a few times along the way but I did spot most of the logic I think. I did quickly prove that 9 couldn’t be in circles but I rather assumed 8s had to be. By trying different possibilities for those using colours, I found 3 circles that were always 8 and the others just fell into place with sudoku. That was the “easy” bit!

At 1:05:00, Simon pencils the centre grid cell with 234. It can't be a 4, though, as this would force a 1 into the next cell to the right, and one of the two cells needs to be a 3. So, that 5-arrow needs to be a 23-pair.

That is a fabulous puzzle. I took a look at it before I went to bed and thought that looks too hard to start now. My subconscious worked out that the circles were probably one of two options while I was falling asleep. Fortunately, I remembered when I woke up. Do I have to add 8 hours to my solve time?

A little scanning in row 8 or column 9 (R9C9 couldn't be 2 or 4 for some time) might have speeded things up a tad. Still a great solve.

I did find the comination of digits in circles, but then nothing else for over an hour..... so I gave up. Lets see Simon figuring it out.

Placing eight 8's in circles or not. New Circle Rule almost as good as 'The Secret' . Any 9x9 box line or column with two circles or more cannot contain the free 8 !!! If it did both circles would have no 8's and that only leaves 7 circles for eight 8's. The free 8 is in box 2!

Row 8 is where to look! At 36:33 and the original conclusion, for the next 5 minutes you've identified the one row without a circled 8 - so row 8 only has one spot for the circled 8 required in it! I wish I had his puzzle mind with my thoroughness! :)

The funny thing is that i was really quick to rule out the different options and was also very quick to put in the 8s, but from there i got hard stuck. I did not see the disambiguation in box 4 and i don't think i would have seen it ever had i not seen your video.

Me: fiddles around trying to see where 9's could go and wahoo can't be 9 after wasting 5 minutes confirming everything through trial and error... and has after continuing in this vain gives up and goes to watch Simon solve this puzzle Simon: oh look at rows 2 and 4, can't be 9's. Me: *doh* I think this puzzle is still a bit advanced for me lol (usually any video over 45ish min is one I know I probably won't be able to solve). oh well, thanks for Simon and Mark I still get to enjoy puzzles that are beyond me (currently! I live in hope!)

18:50 simon is on the verge of finding (if there are 8s on the circles) where every one must be, starting with row 3 column 9....that would have saved a lot of time later!

Not sure I follow. As Simon finds later, there are two possible arrangements of 8s in the grid. Which one is correct only gets determined later, by considering the makeup of some of the 5,6 arrows.

I was sitting here looking at this around the 25min mark thinking it would be better to try placing the arrows in box 1 because of how restricted they seem to be, while you were trying to deduce what was in the circles

54:58, I made a horrible mistake at the start (I read the rules as the marked digits couldn't be in the circles), so I restarted my time on my second attempt. I did check my work a handful of times and ended up seeing that I was on the wrong path once or twice, though, so did have help from the video.

@42:12 I had found the 8 in r8c7 by noticing that the in that row, there still needed to be a circled-8. I think my board looked similar at that point, too. Is there something illogical about that? just wondering... :)

Nothing illogical about that. 🙂 Simon had deduced there would have to be an 8 in one of those two circles in row 8 (box 9) as early as 18:45. He unfortunately forgot about it later though.

or 3+4+5+7, whose arrows use too many digits between 1-3. 3 uses 6, 4 uses 8, 5 uses 8 to 10 (it ran out of 1s), and 7 uses 7. 6+8+8+7 = 29 > 3*9

I don't think I've understood what you're after, because my immediate response would be the secret, 45 circles, will contain all the digits 1-9, and it is the largest set of circles possible. So it's also always the largest set that contains the same number, for any one of the sudoku digits 1-9. I misunderstood, didn't I? 🙂

@@RichSmith77 I meant like in the sudoku of this video where the circles are already set in a way where it is impossible to fit 9 9s in them without breaking the rules of sudoku. Every row, column, and box has at least 1 circle in it so it isnt obvious at a glance how many of those circles can be the same digit.

hmm the logic at 46:00 is incorrect, you can build the 5 even with the 6 arrow being a 2,4, because you can make the 2,4 arrow for the 6 jot down out of the box, then the 2 and the 4 are free for the 5 arrow to use.

I'm paused at 10 minutes and have a gut theory. 3, 7 and 9 are the numbers. very possible to be wrong but i wonder if there is a better way to prove it that will break down these circle rules. i guess ill have to keep watching im wrong quite a bit here. there is a circle in every row column and box. 9 is possible. 8 is not possible if you take a 9 there would be 1 row column and line missing an 8 but a 7 perfectly fits into every row column and box with at least 2 circles exactly 3 circles are in 3 rows columns and boxes. Edit: yeah immediately proved wrong from 9s.

Because the 6 circle in box 9 IS 2/4, meaning any turn into box 9 from the 6 you asked about would break that arrow. Cant be 24 and the 15 isnt possible if you turn up. Forces it to go left.

@@celery6397 At this stage, yave we ruled put that the 6 in box 9 goes straight up? If we haven't, it could go straight up with a 24 pair, and the 6 in box 8 could go right, up with a 24 pair. Seems possible to me at this stage, or am I missing something?

@@SimonEBurgess The given 4 in grey would eliminate any option for a 24 pair in r8c7 and r8c8. If the 6 arrow in box 9 goes up, and the 6 in box 8 does what you say, that given 4 would rule it out as you'd essentially have a 2/4 pair looking at the given 4

Because of the cells he coloured purple. He knows there can only be two 8s in those purple cells (they occupy just two rows). So there are only two 8s in those three columns. That means every other column has to have an 8. So in column 5, either r1c5 is an 8 or r9c5 is. Those two options lead to the two configurations that he colours blue and yellow.

Took me 100 minutes. Kinda. After about an hour I've figured out what'll be in circles and some 8s in circles, but I needed to watch the video to the moment Simon noticed those thing with 5 and 6. After that finished it on my own. I don't know how you should even notice that without like trying every combination for every circle, it's really far from obvious.

Box 1 would have been impossible to fill if there were no 8's in circles. Because as there is no 9's in any circle, you couldn't put 8 on an arrow, and given 5 of the 6 non circle cells in Box 1 have to be arrows, this would have been impossible.

Wow ehat an intriguing design u don t need the givens to solve all but 7 cells of which 3 of the givens. U just need to know the 3 cell locations cant hold a arrowpart. 1) u can deduce how many digits make up that rule as well as which digits. 2) and based on how the dominkes work u can get 72 of the cells. Unfortunate thay u cant finish the puLe

How many times do I have to inform you Simon that most red/green colorblind people can't distinguish between the blue and the purple. The vast majority of red/green colorblind people can't see the red component of purple, making them see it as blue, so they have to rely on brightness to distinguish between them, but the brightness is to close to be of any help. This means that it is virtually impossible to distuniguish beetween the two colors. If you are so keen on making your videos colorblind friendly then please listen to people that are colorblind, like me.
