These are overall steepest. They list Boustead at 29%, but in its middle section is much steeper (Google Earth shows Boustead maxes out at 76% grade while Canton maxes at 70%)but since the top block and bottom block are almost flat Boustead averages at 29%. Canton is just one block that averages out at 37%. Monastery, according to Google Earth, maxes out at 19%. Given the nature of Google Earth I would be careful citing what they show as the grade on those streets. The 29% of Boustead and 37% for Canton are from the City itself and as such should be fairly accurate. I have travels on Boustead and Monastery and Boustead is clearly steeper. I have gone by Canton but I have never gone up Canton but Canton is less steep then the middle section of Boustead (and why both are on the "Dirty Dozen" bicycle hill climb race held in October). No part of Monastery is as steep as Canton and that middle section of Boustead. More on the Dirty Dozen: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dozen_(bicycle_competition) The Dirty Dozen's own web site: www.bikereg.com/pittsburgh-dirty-dozen Please note, there are steeper streets in Pittsburgh but since those streets are steps only, they do not count.
Idk the grade of Rialto street but that one will make you sick to your stomach lol. Probably because it’s so narrow you have to fold in your side mirrors to not hit the passing cars or the stairs on the side and also because if your brakes go out, you’re flying down into major traffic and bridges 😅
That is an Allegheny County problem. When Banksville road was built in the late 1930s (as part of FDR's massive spending program to get the US out of the Great Depression) the County built Banksville Road and the intersections connecting to it. Later on when the State took over Banksville Road, the State only took over the road not the entire intersection. Thus most of Potomac Avenue is the Borough of Dormont, but the part where that slope is belongs to the County, while Banksville Road belong to the State. Thus you see signs "Allegheny County Maintence begins here" and about 100 feet further you will see a sign "Allegheny County Maintence Ends here". That cliffside is a traffic hazard and the state should build a bridge to get rid of it (A bridge over Banksville Road so you can eliminate a red light AND make it easier to get on and off Potomac Avenue). I can not see any other solution to that steep section of road but the state is to cheap to do so, Penndot hates bridges and perfer redlights.
There are steeper streets than those. Within City limits as well as in the Boroughs. There's almost NO flat land here. I grew up here and returned a few years ago...I'm preparing to leave. Permanently. Two reasons - Topography and Weather.
