Always enjoy your videos. You communicate your thoughts and ideas in a manner that is easily understood. "You" can be the most knowledgeable person on a given subject, however, if you can't communicate your thoughts well no one will ever know. You do it well.

My current tripod set up is 1) For small tripods I have a Joby Gorillapod 3K and a Switchpod which can hold everything up to a mirrorless body or DSLR with a 24-70 lens on it. You wouldn't use a telephoto lens on the Switchpod though 2) I have a carbon fiber and aluminum tripod from Neewer from Amazon and they are both fantastic and not overly heavy... Plus they both double as monopods when you remove the neck piece with the ball head and one leg. I find them super handy.

I agree with your feelings about the Peak Design Fiber Travel Tripod. I bought a Nikon Z50 Two Lens Kit about a year and a half ago and my oldest daughter got the tripod for my birthday (I never could have afforded it). That tripod has revolutionized my photography. It is light, convenient, and unobtrusive enough that I carry it ALMOST anytime I have the camera with me. It is GREAT for travel, it is convenient in the field because the camera mounts and dismounts so easily. Thank you for an informative video.

TYCKA makes a great lightweight tripod, similar to the ones you've received from manufacturers. I like it because the ball head it comes with is decent enough and you can remove the center column, making it perfect for sliding into the side pocket of a pack. Vivitar/Neewer make these pistol grip mini tripods, dirt cheap, like $8 on sale cheap. They're similar to the UltraPods but are thicker and support just a bit more weight. I bought a quick release clamp to place on the pistol grip tripod to use when i'm doing trail videos where I don't want to use a full tripod. A velcro strap lets you attach the tiny tripod to a branch as well if you want some height.

Peak Design tripod for hiking, travel. Really Right Stuff large tripod for Astro, landscape with SL2. To your point, almost all tripods that are sturdy will do the trick. Also have the Joby. One tool I have found very helpful for wildlife is a monopod. Pro photo makes nice gear as well. And yes, Atlas packs are terrific!

My equipment - A probably 45 year old Bogen I found at a thrift store. I had to buy some repair parts, but in the end for under $40, I have a nearly indestructible tripod. It has a cinema type head, but it works fine for me. I don't hike anymore, so it works great. A couple years later, I found another Bogen with a ball head. A few bucks in repairs, and it was all mine for under $35. Anyway, being a complete cheapskate in equipment, I like them. Considering I can stand on either one with complete confidence, they work for me.

Hi, as landscape photographer for me the tripod is of the utmost importance. I own a Peak Design Travel Carbon tripod like you. I use it when I need to stay light, even if I don't like so much its head and expecially its little plate. I changed the plate with the L-Plate for SL2 from RRS and now the set up is way better. When I need the max stability I use my second setup: RRS TVC-24L tripod with an Arca Swiss P0 head. This is definitely all I need :)

The Peak Design tripod is awesome. It’s expensive, but so is all quality camera equipment. I would recommend checking out the Platypod - it’s the best way to get a camera really, really low (like sitting on the ground, but able to be tilted, low) and is pretty much completely flat.

If you are talking about gimbal heads for wildlife photography, check out fluids heads as an alternate option. Although targeted for video work, they can also easily be adjusted for still work and tracking animals with a long lens. The downside is weight (several pounds), however about the same as a good gimbal and far less expensive. Plus you can use it for video work! Another option is to take a ballhead with a 90 degree tilt for verticals - loosen all of the knobs and use it for an inexpensive gimbal "like" option. This option has MANY downsides (such as weight not being centered on the tripod), however it certainly works.

My current and seemingly forever tripod is "the Marchioni Tilt-all, served me in college for either 4X5 Speed Graphics or my Nikon F and after college for my Linhof, Hasselblads or Nikons. Flipable shaft for camera support or copy work. Funny story: the Marchioni brothers made their fortune in father's ice-cream business. 1947 saw the Rutherford NJ based company start in a garage, it grew like Topsy until the father passed away, and then a brother, Minolta purchased the rights to market the Rutherford produced product. Leica purchased the patent and rights when the surviving Marchioni passed, but for three years was selling Leica Ice-cream.

My main tripod in a manfrotto 806 with a Benro geared head and I have the Benro March3 TMA48CXL Carbon Fibre Tripod also with a Benro geared head. I have a number of other that I have out grown. But these I can uses in me studio and for long exposers and work well for me. I do think people tend to buy cheep and then find that they do not use the kit as they find that it is difficult and a pain to use. So spend a bit more and get something that works. Keep well, keep safe and smile.

Tripods aren’t as fun to buy as cameras and lenses, but I’ve accumulated a few. I’m mainly using the tallest of the Benro Mach 3 in aluminum with the Benro geared head. I love that one. It’s sturdy and the geared head is precise. When that’s too heavy, I have a Fotopro Chameleon with the ball head. I also have a Cullmann that I bought in the early 1980s. It’s so old, it’s marked as made in WEST Germany, but it’s as sturdy as when it was new. It has a rail for camera positioning so I use it for products. And, I have one of the tiny ones with the legs that collapse inside that I use for off camera flash.

Have a Benro System Go carbon fiber, Induro aluminum tripod and Joby Gorillapod. Both the Benro and Induro have the twist locks (my preference). As for heads, I like Manfrotto, especially their latching plate system. I like how it latches the camera securely to the head. I keep extra plates handy. And speaking of Peak Design, the Dual Plate interfaces nicely with their Slide straps and Manfrotto heads.

Living in Interior Alaska, I do a lot of wildlife, landscape (Mostly in Denali Natl Park), and Aurora photography. I think my dream tripod would be the Peak Design tripod, only I’d go aluminum. It’s cheaper and a little heavier, but not soo heavy it’s not easy to take with me. I like to travel minimal so I have a Sigma 18-300 and my D5300 that fit in a GoPro Case (separate body from lense and they barely fit) and put them in my Solomon race vest. I have an off brand travel tripod that sturdy, but it’s heavy, and I have a Bosch construction tripod that’s both sturdy and light, but way too big for travel.

I have 3 Star D aluminum tripods from the 70’s & 80’s - 1 video & 1 two axis 72” and a Star D mini 29 . Also have a no name metal table top tripod with a Colorado Tripod Co ball. I find I favor the Star D video one. I’m over 6ft tall and like to have the camera closed to my head rather then my waist 😎 All three purchased used for less then $130 -great for a beginner like myself One of them from KEH

I have two tripods that I use regularly, for a compact travel tripod I have a Sirui T-2205X with an Acratech GPSS ball head and then I have a regular Leofoto LM-324CL with their leveling base and a Leofoto VH-30R head. Also, own a Sirui Sirui P-324SR monopod.

i am currently using my old trusty Calumet tripod with a Manfroto ball head. Its sturdy and continues to serve me well . I am however, a fan of Peak Design equipment and am very tempted by their tripods. I have hesitated so far because of the price but I just might get over the sticker shock and take the plunge...

I think most of us could only afford one tripod to 'do it all', and I realise that means compromising in most aspects. I have a Hama Gamma 72, but I tend to use a monopod when hiking. What would you say would be your most versatile tripod?

I think what I would have liked to see is more specific practical information about your experience with your tripods - for example, which of the very light tripods, if any, would adequately support a 200-500mm lens? That’s one real-world practical question wildlife photographers are often asking, but I’m sure there are many other such questions of pratical relevance to many kinds of photographers. Cheers. 🙂

I think Tripods should be thought of like cameras and lenses. You pick the tripod you take with you based on the task (and I think most serious photographers have at least two or possibly more). For example, I had a heavy duty CF tripod that's used primarily for landscape or when I'm in wndy conditions, and then I have another one that can be used in the studio, or for travel (which is also CF). But like I said, think of them like lenses or camera bodies... you use the right tool for the right job.

I have the Sirui 3T-15B that came with a Sirui B00K ball head, I think it's good till a 70-200mm 2.8 if doesn't extend. It's less practical for longer lenses (100-400, 300 2.8 and 500 4.0), though it can actually support them. Then my second tripod is the RRS TP-243 ground tripod. That one is VERY solid and I could probably stand with all my weight on it. I have also have an Benro gear head since recently, which I think will be good for AP with my larger lenses. It seems gear heads are also great for landscapes and architecture. Next I think to get a Manfrotto 500AH fluid head with the Kirk bridge and slider or maybe the Gitzo 3-way fluid head. To replace both a ball head and a gimbal. But if that doesn't work, will have go with a RRS BH-55 ball head and the Gitzo fluid gimbal head. Will also need a very tall systematic tripod, I think it will be the Leofoto 404CL. Will need a levelling base, and probably one from Leofoto that has set screws is a good idea. Finally was mulling over if I need a travel tripod, and I think would pick the Peak Design that already has a ball head, but I'm not sure the carbon fiber version is worth almost double the price.

What about a "L" bracket? I use a KM tripod. It does the job. Nikon 105 f.8 macro and my Nikon Z 24-200 with ext. tubes. It does the work .

Speaking of dream tripod - Novoflex doesn't even call their products "tripods". According to Novoflex it's "a camera supporting system". That's what I really like: its flexibility! If you call the Peak Design travel tripod expensive what will you call Novoflex' products (or Gitzo's tripods)? Well I'm also dreaming of a light weight travel tripod. Probably a Gitzo Series 2 with a Novoflex Classic ball 2 and a quick mount (also by Novoflex). I find the Peak Design travel tripod simply not stable enough. (Even the hype on the Peak Design travel tripod and all those influencers saying how great it is makes me very sceptical about it.) 🤔 Thanks for the video though. 😍

The dream tripod: Manfrotto 066 2 section with the 90° center column. But at half the weight, with my old RC2 pistol grip ball head attached. But that Peak Design one looks nice. Have you tried the aluminum version? $600 is pricey. $300 is possible. I don't mind a bit of weight but 4-5lbs. Is the limit. I have a lightweight and short (cheap amazon) one to use when I want to travel really light, but I don't trust it with much.

I've seen many posters saying "PeakDesign is awesome", so there must be some truth in it. I just don't see that truth. The thin center column needs to be expanded for portrait mode. And you need to be happy with just a ballhead. Which in some situations will be the worst head compared to geared-, video- or gimbal heads. But using them is already adding so much weight, that an additional set of more sturdy and longer legs is no longer a concern. I own a few Gitzos and would not replace them for any PeakDesign product. Admittedly because PeakDesign apparently only develops what is founded and financed by their kickstarter campaigns. I rather support companies doing their development the old fashioned way. I've been disappointed by a couple of the PD products which looked cool at the beginning and turnt out to be a pack of new flaws compared to the old flaws of other products.

Gorilla Pod folks must have given away thousands of tripods to get the positive exposure they get on RU-vid for their really crappy product. Too thick to vlog, not flexible enough and wear out fast. Gotta have one huh.
