@@sergten True true. I can't stand those big ipad screens replacing the traditional controls and hood. No matter how good the rest of the car is, I'll just not take it if fitted with this do all giant ipad. It's way cheaper and easier to do than traditional buttons and controls, so this may be the reason they do it.

Ya know, I was happy with single DIN size radios with bass, treble, volume and tuning knobs. Now, in their bad faith, they make it hard and expensive to buy third party radios for newer cars. These screens require too much attention while driving, with legacy controls you had to be tactile and not visual, while keeping your eyes on the road.

How about offering "google built in" ? Yeah, build in a company whose whole business model is collecting and selling our personal data. Now they can record exactly how we drive and where/when we drive and sell that data to insurers, retailers, and whoever might want to profit from it. Not that the automakers aren’t doing this themselves, but this just adds another layer that we have to deal with. We really need legislation to stop all these companies from collecting data on every facet of personal lives.

OTT. Agreed! 7. Active parking. Not an issue. 8. Large glass roof. Agreed. Needs a shade. 9. Auto gearbox. If too complex, you shouldn’t be driving! 10. DCT. I agree with you on all these unnecessary features for all the reasons you mentioned. They make cars too complex and expensive, and of course, it is a dilemma when they stop functioning. Our car manufacturing has evolved into a state in which formerly excellent manufacturers now have poor reliability ratings, high maintenance and repair costs and consumers are hesitant to buy into all that. We need smaller, lighter cars/trucks that still are safe and efficient. Let the car makers concentrate on those aspects and create cars that people can afford.

One of the BEST and most informative video I have seen for a VERY long time. All car buyers are recommended to save this video, in order to check the features that you should avoid when you are looking for your next car. As a buyer you need to spend some time to do your research. But time that is well spent. I had a big problem finding my next car, without all those crazy features. Cars with naturally aspirated engines are hard to find. My preferred pick was a Mazda CX-5 with a 2,5 l gasoline (non turbo). It ticks all the boxes, except the irritating Stop/Start system. I will probably deactivate it permanently.

The reason why a lot of automotive manufacturers are using touch screens is that after a period of time, they can charge the consumer a subscription fee to use advanced technology that you have to use or the car will cease to function or many of the advanced technologies consumers have come to rely on. Over the air software updates in many of today's modern vehicles are there to boost manufacturers' revenue. So manufacturers use this new technology to convince the public about how necessary it is. Just look at how we rely on our cell phones today, compared to 20 years ago.

I don't want anyone messing with my car except me. It needs to work the same way every time unless I personally and specifically approve a change. OTA updates are out of the question on something as important as a car. I won't use Windows on my laptop because I demand complete control, and no one's life is at stake with that. If there is one thing that is certain, it is that if there is a means for your car to collect data and send it to someone, that someone (usually the car manufacturer) is going to sell it. They benefit by getting money; the buyer benefits by getting information, but you do not benefit... and it's your data! GM has already been caught selling the data on how people drive to Lexis-Nexus, which then makes it available to insurers, which use it as an excuse to raise people's rates. It's different from those little spy gadgets that plug into your OBD2 port and send the info to the insurer voluntarily. Those things supposedly are only used to lower insurance rates when people are extra good, not to raise them when they are not. More importantly, it's voluntary when you put the little thing in yourself. No one came right out and asked the GM owners if they were okay with their info being sold to insurers. I am sure GM can point to some language on page 31 of a EULA as long as a novel that gives them permission, but no one reads that stuff, by design. They make it huge and hard to understand on purpose. Experience has shown as that IoT devices (internet of things) generally have horrendous security vulnerabilities, and to make cars IoT devices is beyond the pale. That is a very complex machine there, and there is a lot of potential for trouble. I don't find it to be worth the risk. I won't tolerate any connectivity between the WAN (internet) and my car.

My car came with parking assist. I've had my car nearly a year now, and I've not used it one single time. There is just no need to parallel park where I live. It has run flat tires as well. I hated them at first, but now pay them no attention to at all. My car also has a DCT. It can be jerky at low speeds, but other than that it shifts smoothly and feels sporty. They work best with a sporty car. I also have a dual pane sunroof. It's been fine as well, but thankfully has a sunshade. It would be really hot without one. The best option that came with my car was a heated steering wheel. I thought I would never use it, but over the winter it felt like heaven on ice cold days. You have to keep a microfiber on your lap to keep wiping them in intervals, as well as every time you touch them. Also these fake leather seats that are replacing high quality fabric. I also hate the psychological feeling of having a torsion beam replace a multi link even though it might still work well. Just that feeling that it's a torsion beam bothers. Getting a car that has nothing drilled to the roof is going to heavily limit your choice of cars. Sure, leaks can develop over time, but are you going to remove all the windows from your home because leaks can develop in them over time? There's a trade-off being made. That said, I had a 14 year old car with a shark fin antenna and moonroof. Neither ever leaked.

Great post. Car should serve the driver and not vice versa. It should be simple to operate. "Simple" is not a bad word, it means - less efforts driver has to make to operate the car then more attention he/she will have to focus on safe driving. For example: to adjust digital controls while driving the driver has to take his/her eyes off the road. And for us, babyboomers, we have to put reading glasses on. Is this safe? In winter, can buttons be managed with gloves on? Heated outside mirrors should be mandatory on all cars - good view is not a luxury feature, it is a safety feature. Flat fix is a dumbest thing ever, spare tire should be offered at least as an option to purchase. Rear blinkers placed too low (in bumper) is another dumb idea. Why car manufacturers don't listen to us?

Mr. Prymak has done a comprehensive job identifying bad vehicle technology. For us having a panoramic sunroof rules out the vehicle, even if it has a sunshade. Sunshades don't stop any of the road noise coming through the glass inchs from your ears. They make the interior loud and unpleasant. Traditional sunroofs have a sliding cover which blocks sound. Panoramic sunroofs are just another modern junk tech feature.
@lloydlagera6621
@lloydlagera6621 2 месяца назад
Extra large sunroofs are also a horrible pain. Unless they can perfect the water drainage channels and keep them from clogging - you'll have water in your car after a period of time, especially if you have trees around your house.

Great video, hard to argue against any of your points. I was given a loan car while my work vehicle was in for service, that loan vehicle had lane keeping assist. Coming onto a wet section of road in sunshine, the vehicle violently tried to steer me into the centre nature strip. It was the most terrifying experience I've ever had behind the wheel. I will never take another loan vehicle from them again.

I've had a turbo diesel since 2016 and I've never had a single issue. It's a BMW 2 series 1.5L turbo diesel and it goes like the wind. However I do agree with you on everything else. I have 16" alloys with run flat tyres. The run flats are fine now and very stable with only moderately increased wear but in the beginning with my 2007 BMW 1 series, they hadn't perfected the system and I had to replace a lot of tyres which I am certain now didn't need to be changed. Very expensive. These days I'm happy not to have to stop by the side of ever increasingly busy roads to change a tyre. I got one repaired recently to see what would happen and several months on, there's been no issues!!!! I enjoy your channel and have just subscribed! From Dublin, Ireland, 🇮🇪.😊

My 2021 Niro PHEV is awesome! Truly the best of both worlds. No it is not a race car but the dual clutch transmission with sport mode is efficient and fun to drive. It has driver’s seat memory is power adjustable. Plus the front seats are heated and ventilated and full leather seats all around. The car is easy to get in and out of both front and rear seats, and easy to park and drive around the city, very solid on the highway, with lots of space in the back, plus roof racks and cross bars. I like the regular sunroof (not pano), and the understated styling helps this very cool car blend in. I added on a block heater for winter and rain guards for summer. The regular tinted windows are perfect. The dual zone AC is great and I like having buttons to push. The dual digital instrument panels give a ton of programmable information and again… blend in. Not like other cars that have an iPad stuck on the dash… I could go on, but you get the picture.

Points: 1 -- Engine start/stop might actually cost you fuel in some situations. A warm engine is more efficient. 2 -- Touch screen climate controls are a danger even when they work as intended. You really should pull off the road and stop to adjust them. It is not possible to keep your eyes on the road and use a touch screen for climate controls. 3 -- Yes, a real spare is important. Even a donut tire can save you when the sidewall of a tire gets ripped out but if you have a lot of driving to do, the donut is just not safe. 4 -- Attention monitoring plus #2 just make driving a nightmare and make things more dangerous again. 5 -- You didn't mention EVs. For many people, they are a better option. When you buy one don't even talk about the 0-60 time. They all have that nailed down. It is other stuff you need to think about. The dealer will try to attract you with the fact that an ICE car can't beat it but do you really care?

Excellent list! I'm not certain one can avoid the Start/Stop one anymore; that seems to be in everything. But, in most cases, it's easy to disable at least. I just encountered the weirdness of the environmental controls one; my brother was visiting from the US and he had a new Kia Sportage which has a capacitive touch system that switches the two physical knobs back and forth between the environmental controls and the media controls! So weird. Another good annoying feature; Push-button start. Again, this one is getting hard to avoid because it's just what they're all doing now. The reason this one is dumb is the reliance on the proximity broadcast of the keyfob. That system is easy to spoof, which is why it's gotten so much easier for thieves to steal modern cars. In many cars, it can be disabled, which reverts the car back to the passive chip in the keyfob (which has to be brought right up to the start button to be read). Problem is, not all manufacturers provide the instructions on how to disable to proximity broadcasts of both the keyfob and the vehicle. If it's there, it's deep in the owners manual. If not, these days one could probably search on the Net for it and find out how to do it. It usually involves pressing certain buttons in the car together or in a specific sequence, then a beep from the car will indicate success.

The fob signals are encrypted now. The encryption requires a public/private "key pair" to work. The original push button systems sent the signals "in clear text" resulting in easy replication and theft rates. Stolen vehicles sent to 3rd world countries are useless if they can't be easily repaired; one of the reasons hybrids/BEVs are not targeted.

@@ScubaSteveCanada I work as a senior network administrator - well aware of how they work. The problem is that it's still easy to intercept the key exchange. By using signal boosters, thieves work in pairs - one by the car, one by the house (as many people have their keys near the front door), and can record the key exchange or even just broadcast the proximity system of the fob to the car so that it unlocks. Once unlocked, they have access to the OBD2 port and the car can be reprogrammed to accept a new key.

Stop - Start. It's so that the manufacturer can pretend that it's more economical than it is IF owners just turn it off. I read so many Journalists who say "JUST TURN IT OFF" - but when legislators work that out, they'll react and demand manufacturers remove the ability to do so. I had a hybrid before my current car - they do it properly.

I drive a hybrid and, if it uses start-stop, it is so smooth in transitioning that I don’t notice it. In fact, it shifts between electric and engine power constantly in city driving. I love the adaptive cruise control and I use it in suburban driving (like at 45 mph) to simply set it at the speed limit to make sure I don’t speed. The “touch” A/C controls are annoying but I don’t need to adjust the AC that often. The “all-around” cameras are very useful for entering the parking stripes precisely and avoiding curbs and other parked cars. The force-ventilated seats are very helpful in cooling off in the hot climate of Florida. (Unfortunately only available on the highest trim level).

I would agree with most of the list. For the driver attention, it is mandatory on all new vehicles in the EU, so it's not like you can avoid it ;o). I'll have to wait for next summer to see if the panoramic roof is a problem on very sunny days. It is supposed to do a good job at preventing heat from entering ... time will tell. Keeping physical buttons for commonly used features (like climate control) is better. I can understand that putting all in the screen enables cost cuts, less wiring, ... but with physical buttons you can do things while still looking at the road. Now some new cars do come with a vocal assistant that can do stuff for you by voice rather than using buttons ... so I'll see while using it.
