My 1995 2.2 legacy has over 300,000 miles as well, and it put up with me beating the hell out of it in high school. None of my Subarus since have been nearly as reliable as that one. Those things are so well built and easy to work on. Great first car

I have a 2001 Saturn LW300 wagon that I purchased new that has 404,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. I used it for commuting 160 miles per day for its first five years and then it became an extra car used primarily as a dog taxi and foul weather transportation to save the good cars. Repairs have been few and far between and mostly minor and it has never left anybody stranded and has only failed to start twice. Routine maintenance by a qualified mechanic and taking care of small problems before they cause larger problems and any vehicle can last almost indefinitely not just Toyotas.

Fast highway miles on a new vehicle, as long as the drivetrain has been properly maintained, don’t make a vehicle age as much as “average” mileage and town driving. In my experience.

@garysarratt1 True but only about half of my commute was at highway speeds the rest of it was stop-and-go traffic in Chicago and about 150,000 MI of the vehicle accumulated mileage was as an extra vehicle and it was used by three teenagers who learned to drive in it.

The 1st and 2nd generation Legacy was the best Legacy ever made. The 2.2L is a fantastic engine. They just go and go. I learned to drive a manual transmission on a 1990 Legacy L wagon. I miss that car so much. I also sold a 1995 and a 1996 Legacy wagon when I had a used car dealership. One had a stuck odometer at 191k miles, but still ran like a clock. I loved driving them around. Not sporty cars per se, but they sat low, had a nice growly engine sound, and handled quite well.

We have a 1995 with the wonderful 2.2, and she still runs like a champ. Our tranny has the input shaft going, but it trained three teenagers how to drive stick, poor baby. She's our dog carrier, and our Home Depot runner. She has been all over California, through heat, mountain passes, major storms, and blizzards. She has 242000 and the engine is still going strong. Funny thing is, she's originally a Colorado rig. I'm a HUGE Toyota fan, but this little hippie mobile as I call it (my wife painted it very creatively) made me a subbie lover as well. We've had just as many Toyotas as subbies.

My 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback with the EJ-22 has 219,600 miles on it now, and runs so well I expect it to pass the 300,000 mark without any issues. It has never been rebuilt, and other than once when the fuel pump failed at 193,000 miles, it has never required a tow. I will need to replace the AC compressor once the summer heat hits this year. I have the oil changed once a year, and now averaging just 5000 miles a year, I have never have had to add oil. I recommend any Subaru car without reservation.

Nice. There’s an era of v6 engines for GM that seemingly just last a long time, the 3.8 immediately comes to mind. Manufacturers got fuel injection figured out, but the engines otherwise were relatively simple. Not just GM, but also the ford 4.0, the toyota 4.0, nissan 4.0. There’s so many I don’t even know them. Now we’re going to dump them all for something more complex, more expensive, less reliable in turbo 4s.

If you live in a snowy climate where they also apply salt... then most old cars are hopeless. Everything becomes a crusty mess to work on. After 12 to 14 years even the best made cars stop being fun to tinker on. It would be worth getting one of these type of cars from a milder climate where they can age without the life ending rust issues.

We have an 07 Legacy/Outback and it's a freaking nightmare at 130k miles, I can't see it reaching 150k, much less 300k. One look at that engine and it screams brand new, all the rubber lines and wires look new, the alternator has no black powder from the belt wearing away whatsoever and the copper coils are shiny, that belt bushing looks brand new too, etc.

I would add the gmt800 Tahoe to this list, I see these around and almost all have over 200k miles and still run great. Better interior and seats then the sequoia too

I maintain that manufacturing fewer longer lasting vehicles would utilize far less energy than creating many disposable ones. However, that smacks against the planned obsolescence philosophy.

The Sequoia got a 5 speed transmission in 2004-2007 not a 4 speed. It also only had the VVTI I-force 2005-2007 the 2001-2004 were non interference non vvti. And its a 2uz-fe not fg.

Subaru is ok if you get a manual. Any car with cvt is pos. I had a friend tell me cvt transmission was the best because they’re so popular with automakers. I I asked him you think they’re popular because of their quality? I think they’re popular with the manufacturers because they’re so cheap and they can make a larger profit

How do you know if a used car has been properly maintained?
@quintonulm2435
@quintonulm2435 2 месяца назад
Take it to a trusted mechanic BEFORE you buy it and pay them to do a full inspection. It may seem like throwing money away if you have to take multiple cars to them to find a good one, but a couple hundred now is well worth it compared to the thousands you would have to spend in repairs on a poorly taken care of vehicle.
@michaelmartin2276
@michaelmartin2276 2 месяца назад
Head gasket issues were not as prevalent as the media makes out. Most any vehicle can and will last 200k miles if properly maintained. The old Toyotas have serious frame and under body rust issues . What good is a good engine if you make a hard turn, stop hard or hit a pothole and body and frame separate ! Seen many in my shop where Toyota nuts spend thousands of dollars on frame work or full replacement.

Any car will go 300k miles if you dump endless repairs money into it. I had a 97 subaru and was a p.o.s. it had 2 headgaskets, 2 transmissions, endless wheel bearings all before 160k. Where my 2015 mazda cx5, 05 suburban 5.3l, 07 toyota matrirx all have over 200k miles with no problems but basic maintenance.

Thank you guys, great discussion, often a matter of opinion. Subaru's are generally a good choice, but I've seen a handful with the 100k head gasket issue. Love the 4Runner, and Sequoia, a huge fan of the Toyota 4.7 (from mid-2000's Tundra) the comfortable reliable Jeep alternative

Reliably blows head gaskets. if the subaru was dirt cheap its worth fixing and flipping. those were simple ish stuff back then compared to the crap they are pushing out today
