You are right most of the manufacturers try to sell with cosmetic changes, Ford was one among them see what happend to them same will happen to VW and Skoda. India is very competitive market with the tax which was one of the reason why everyone increased the cost around 20% or more still they are giving these basic products. May be these companies are thinking if they are not able to sell something in Europe they can try it here. Indian manufacturers are the ones giving more models others are just doing timepass in India. I believe EV is not worth taking all the effort. It is not environmental friendly considering battery manufacturing recycling etc not cost effective for someone using around 10k KM per year as reselling after 5 years will eat up all the profit from fuel savings.

One goes through a very agonising phase when the car you bought a year ahead is offered at a discount, as in this year by as much as 1-2 lakhs on the electric cars, and even on the Jimney which was very highly priced, thus selling in very few numbers. Another point raised by the availability of different models of VW and Skoda or even companies like FIAT, FORD in the countries abroad - whereas there companies mentioned dish out the limited models that they do to us, probably indicating that the huge market in India doesnt deserve a better choice or options. This is again very sad. the JSW-MG collaboration hopefully would bring in many more small car models which are better built and fun to drive. It is appreciable that the JSW boss is aspiring to bring in a lot more cars into our country through this alliance with the Chinese company. Yet another point that you raised is of electric cars where the battery is a huge money drain for the nation - in the developed countries there are many cars on the road which are hybrids and less of pure electric ones. In fact hybrid cars come in three forms, which many may not be aware of - probably you need to educate the car enthusiasts regarding this matter too. I am always with hybrid technique, u can easily get around 25 kmpl in reasonable good capacity engine, which is more that sufficient for average consumer, it also will reduce emissions and imports of oil. So placing your bet on electric won't be a wise choice. I've also read an article quoting "u could make a about 90 hybrids with tha same capacity battery used in an EV"
