You know another type of DVD case that had no business existing? Those cardboard clipper cases that Warner Bros. used from 1997 to 2004. Their cheap, and are a pain to store on anything but a tower rack. Mainly cause the case sitting next to it will get pulled with it and fall off the shelf and its annoying as hell.

Yeah they are also known as "Snapper" cases. Good luck finding those second hand these days without major damages. Is still have all of mine and kept them in proper condition. However the ones i got later on flea markets were often badly damaged and dented. However the actual disc holder for the disc in there, was pretty good. And the internal extended artworks and chapterlist is something they sadly omitted for the later re-releases in standard keep-cases. Which is a shame since the original Snapper release of "The Matrix" even had a foldout insert. Which wasn't common for most Warner Releases.

Glad to hear/see someone else mentioning these abominations. When I used to collect/buy a ton of DVDs, and physical media, in general, I hated getting these d**n things. I would always get scratched up discs, even when I was the original owner, and opening it up, for the first time, and then they always ran the risk of getting even more scratched up over time, or getting scratched up in the first place, due to being stacked on top of one another. A very stupid way they chose to sell anything, especially something new.

the stacked discs gets worse, in my complete series sets of Rod Serling's original Twilight Zone and 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they do normal disc holders but are so stiff ya have to be very fucking careful otherwise you can easily snap the disk, I have to press on the clamps with all my might and there's a second disc underneath but even worse they overlapped the stacks so in order to get to disc 4 for example, I have to carefully remove discs 1, 2, and 3 super fucking carefully and then carefully remove disc 4, my Godzilla millenium era collection does the tall stack though with multi movies per disc and it's super annoying to get to each movie in correct order as they didn't even order the fucking movies, it's super annoying, this is why I prefer things in order, easier to find and to get to, so the complete collections are risky but a good shelf space saver

Those Fullscreen flipper discs are only really a thing on the North American market. Here in Europe & Germany this only happened a few times (like for the german first DVD release of "Sleepers") but usually movies were ONLY available as Widescreen releases. MGM and Columbia Pictures often released movies with 4:3 versions. Sometimes pan & scan and sometimes actually open matte. Like "The Abyss" or "Terminator 3 - rise of the Machines" which were both shot in Super35 and then released as open matte versions in the USA, as individual releases. MGM however usually used flipper Discs (DVD10 format). Warner Brothers mostly used them to simply house longer movies on such a flipper. Like "The Pelican Brief". This was mostly because the duallayer DVD-9 Format was not ready yet. This is why most early DVDs are either single sided (DVD-5 format) or dual sided singlelayer discs (DVD-10 format). The Numbers are a reference to the roughly maximum amount of Gigabyte per side. DVD-5: 4,7GB / DVD-10: 2x 4,7GB / DVD-9: 8,7GB. There was also a rarely used DVD-18 format which consisted of 2 duallayer DVDs glued together.

I didn't think any company was still using the stackable DVD cases past 2010 or 2011. As an anime collector, one of the most prevalent examples of a company that used them was AD Vision. When they were going bankrupt in 2007-2008, they were still releasing series onto the market. For the few new titles released and the titles they decided to release at that point, the dvds were crammed into stackable cases and these sets were marketed as "Economy" editions. Some of these anime series were up to 8-10 discs so it can definitely be annoying to deal with constantly handling these discs. When ADV became Sentai and was re-releasing some of ADV's former catalogue, they continued using these cases (in fact, Sentai continued to use ADV's logo on their releases and discs for several years).

I have a worse one: "The Omen Collection [Blu-ray]" (black box) Four discs, each held on a foam rubber holder in the center. The foam rubber is held on by weak glue. The first time I had it shipped, the discs were loose and bounced all over with their foam rubber dots. Ruined en route. Returned and had another set shipped, which arrived intact. But I still hate the rubber dots.

Gonna agree about the stacked ones. I've seen some tv sets like that Robocop and I don't mind those too much. Some cases that I really don't like are the ones with the left side of the case cut out like your Pulp Fiction one, with either that six piece pie cut or the ones with the recycle symbol cut. It makes the cases so flimsy. Guessing a lot of them now have gone to that maybe to save on plastic, and that the early years of dvd cases had the solid sturdy cases. Someday I will swap all my fave movies into the best cases I have

The Worst DVD cases in my opinion are the discontinued Simpsons seasons 11 to 20 box sets the cardboard cases are cheap as hell and wear out quickly the sleeves are annoying to get the Discs out usually they end up scratching the discs inside the cardboard case sleeves. honestly as a DVD collector this is a nightmare I really wish Fox would re release the DVDs and fix the packaging and also give us more seasons on DVDs but thanks to Disney and streaming services as a whole that's probably Never going to happen great way to treat loyal fans punishing them for not bothering with streaming services lol. Also Another bad DVD box set is the entire Married with Children box set the Discs are hard to get out and are a pain in the ass to put back in the case but the worse is trying to get the Discs out as they hurt my thumbs with the hard sharp plastic surrounding the Discs honestly any dvd case what hurts your thumbs is a huge negative for me. Great video by the way very informative.

Offhand, I can't think of any DVD sets I have with stacked discs (but I have a lot of shows and movies on DVD and it's been quite awhile since I've watched any of them so I might just be forgetting and I still have some I haven't even opened) but I do have some blu-ray sets that came like that and I despise the stacking, also the sets that have discs 'half-stacked' like in the Robocop one you showed. UGH! One thing I hated in DVD TV show sets were the cardboard fold out cases. They might hold 4 or 6 discs and you had to unfold the whole thing to access some of the discs. So unwieldy and awkward! Carnivale is one that comes to mind. Haven't had any of those (so far) with blu-rays but several shows I have on blu-ray come in mock books with cardboard sleeves to hold the discs and while the packaging is attractive I'm always afraid that, even though I try to be very careful, sliding them in and out of the sleeves might scratch the discs. Other packaging I dislike includes those megacases with one big case holding a whole series, often with two 'half-stacked staggered discs on each side of a page, and usually the whole disc holder thing is loose and not attached to the outer case. On some the center disc holder button is hard to remove the discs from too and you have to be very careful not to break the disc. My preferred packaging for multi-disc sets is a standard case with individual plastic pages that each hold one disc, whether it's a multi-movie set (although separate cases for each movie is good too) or a single TV season. If it's a box set, I like a plain cardboard outer box holding the cases for the movies or individual seasons. Just simple packages with easy access and good protection. I might add that some of the Region Free sets I've ordered meet that basic criteria but they're made from a harder, more brittle plastic than the US sets and I've had several that came with the plastic pages broken off and some with cases that have one side that fits over the other and I've pinched my fingers with those a few times. Another thing to add, I really prefer the thick solid hard cases (and full-size over slim cases) much more the ones with thin plastic with cutouts on the front under the paper cover and plastic keep cases in general over the plastic framed cardboard snap-cases. With the latter, if something breaks on the case you're stuck unlike the keep-cases where you can remove the paper cover and slip it into a new case.
@bmasters1981

And worse, there are those huge keepcase complete-series releases with 2 or 3 discs stacked on top of each other- - I have a few of those, for The Untouchables, The Streets of San Francisco and Emergency! (you have to manipulate quite a few discs to keep them in order, and it's hard to manage the discs as you proceed through the series); I eventually learned how to manage them, and I'm glad to have the series to enjoy, but when I first got one in 2018, for The Streets of San Francisco, I wasn't sure if I would ever learn how to use it (albeit I eventually did, and finished the series).

The worst DVD covers are the “super digipaks” as I like to call them, they’re the same size as slimline DVD cases, but instead of plastic the casing is made of cardboard with a self tearing gatefold and the disc is held on a thin plastic platter that’s so brittle it practically breaks itself and you can’t repair or replace them at all. These cases are a crime against humanity and as of currently the only DVD I have that comes in one is Tegan and Sara’s It’s Not Fun. Don’t Do It!, I got replacement cases for all of my other “super digipak” DVDs but this one doesn’t seem to have any replacement art and it sucks because I watch it regularly and just using the case regularly is wearing the shitty cardboard down and putting pressure on the brittle plastic teeth. Fuck these cases, I hate Digipaks for CDs but the DVD variant is EVEN FUCKING WORSE.

Dvd's will go bad sitting on a shelf. My 2006 14 disc box set of Superman, all the disc stopped plying, even one cracked (layers came apart), I am someone who takes really good care of his disc and games. No scratches on my stuff. What happens is temperature changes can cause the disc to expand and contract, causing layers to separate, so then the laser does not read correctly. 3 of my smallville seasons went bad. Warner Brothers did replace them after I contacted them about the problem.

Lots of long running TV shows (Dallas & ER in my case) were released in this format, and although I have treated them well many episodes will not play after only 15yrs. In some cases the entire b-side won't play - essentially rendering the entire collection useless. I am gradually upgrading to Blu-ray wherever possible - which claims to have a better lifespan.

Because they cause the case to be weak and flimsy, and the cover art gets damaged if you press in on the cover too hard. I've had several covers to movies and videos get damaged because of these cases. Even 3DS cases started having stupid holes in them. WHAT'S THE POINT? For the DVD cases like this, I started replacing them with NORMAL cases when it's a movie I like and want to keep. And even my WII game cases as well. I also despise DVD cases like that Adventure Time case at 5:35. Where the discs slide into the side sleeves. That's totally a scratching hazard. Personally I hate anything other than the Jewel Case and Super Jewel Box, because everything else is made out of printed-on cardboard that tears and fades with regular use, and unlike the aforementioned jewel packaging it’s not replaceable in the event it does get ruined, Digipaks and the little mini-vinyl sleeves are definitely the worst offenders, the thing that pisses me off the most is some monster thought DIGIPAK DVDs WERE A GOOD IDEA. yeah, same as a single disc digipak, just as tall as a DVD case. You can imagine how well they hold up (they don’t) and they’re even less replaceable than regular digipaks because they were only really used for some concert movies and a few oddball releases in the early-mid 00s. And no, they’re not like the WB “snapper” cases, they’re worse somehow!

I love this attention paid to your dvd library...and that's what our dvd collections are; no different from private libraries and for collectors it's a big deal. I even go as far as getting colored dvd cases that go with the color scheme of the artwork! It just looks really great on the shelf. The title of this video had me thinking it was gonna be about these certain cases where the "press button" in the center holds the disc too tightly, making it really difficult to get the disc out. I have had a couple dvd's CRACK while trying to get them out of these cheap cases! That really sucks if the dvd is some rare, obscure out of print title that goes for 80 bucks on ebay..(I have a lot of those due to my weird, obscure taste in movies), so whenever I get one of those cases I throw it in the trash...We gotta protect our dvd's!

The only time I've seen a stacker case is with the 4K edition of Black Hawk Down. There's 3 discs, but only 2 slots, so they put 2 discs in one slot. I had no idea stacker cases were used for other titles.

Always hated the stacked disc cases. No longer buy DVDs because they are standard definition and look like crap on my 4k tv. Now stick to buying 4K UHD, 3d (if available) and blu-ray. The cases rarely if ever have stacked discs.

The 3 Stooges? Mine came in their own cases. But when I bought Bewitched every single disc was stacked on each other, in a flimsy plastic holder. I hate it when they come stacked, or put in a cardboard sleeve.

I have a couple of PC games that use this kind of 1 spindle multiple disks case to store multiple disks which is even more stupid than using these cases for movies. Another good example of a case that should be banned is the snap case used by Warner Bros for anything they were responsible for manufacturing and distributing. (thankfully that case type is long dead)

Why is it more stupid? Once you install the game, you only need the top most disk to actually play it.

There was a time that I liked these. ONLY because sometimes when you get the combo disks that flip like pages in a book sometimes they will break. Then I needed the bottom disk from the "all-in-one pile" and from that point on I totally agree. This style is also trash.

@imark7777777 8 месяцев назад
Yeah I hate those too but there's one that's worse the kind where it doesn't have any knockouts for your fingers to get under the disks to take them out. The kind where there is a nicely molded knockout where they put a wall in place. I've never actually seen one where it was half-and-half like at 5:50

The cases that really need to be banned are the ones that hold the disk in place in such a way they can actually crack the inner hole! It's this 3 pronged holder made of very stiff plastic and even when pushing the holder down all the way it still requires quite a bit of force to get the disk in or out with an audible creaking sound. I've run into it more with PS2 games then movies, and even then rarely, but after I lost my copy of Burnout 3 and Burnout Revenge to cracks, I've been careful to check all of my cases and switch out any of the bad kind.

These never bothered me too much, but something that always did were those stupid eco cases like at 0:59. They bend and damage so easily to the point where I buy replacement cases in bulk just to replace them. Ironically, I'm having to waste more plastic doing that.
@scottthewaterwarrior
@scottthewaterwarrior 8 месяцев назад
I've had more issues with really thick plastic cases, the thickness sometimes extends to the disk holder which requires so much force to remove the disk I'm afraid of breaking it! Actually did crack the center hole in a couple of PS2 games with cases like that, now any case I get of that type I immediately switch out.

But yeah the whole stacking discs on blu ray isnt something that happens anymore but stuff like that robocop set still happens. One example i have is rhe back to the future 4k set. All rhe movies are stacked on each side and because they are hard ro get out youll have a fight just to get them out.

It's mostly "budget" labels like "Mill Creek" that still use those stack cases...Like if you buy a "Sonny Chiba Collection" box set, you get the discs stacked like that. Also the quality of the dvd's vary greatly, depending on what source they used..Lately I have started collecting "Boutique Label" blurays. from labels like Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome, Code Red etc...the packaging of these high end releases are really beautiful...they spare no expense. You won't see any "Stacked discs" in THOSE editions!

I HATE the stacker type cases. Some 3 or more DVD sets will have nice plastic spots for each disc. Then some have a circle imprint and they put them right on top of each other. Then you hear loose discs all the time in stores. Too me it is not difficult to secure a disc in a case. I understand transportation and all rattles things but I've moved and not had one come loose. As for discs themselves I dislike dual sided discs you have to flip. Some players have trouble with them and they get scratched in seconds. Id rather pay a few more dollars for a 2nd disc in a set
