Anyone can ask anything they want for these models. Check sold listings. The most expensive one was dead stock and sold just under a year ago for $4999 asking price. Who knows what the final price was. Everyone thinks their guitars are worth way more than they are. Especially Trogly.
@unclestubs8377
@unclestubs8377 Год назад
The prices on Reverb are what people "want" for their guitar not necessarily what it is worth. If everyone lists them for around the same amount then, that's what you'll have to pay to get one, again not what they're worth.

Yeah, ol' Trogly has had a lot to do with driving the prices up on these things. It's great that he documents these old guitars, yes, and it's nice that he gives people the chance to see guitars that they may otherwise never hear of. But come on - these things are not worth that much money. And now you've got the new Phil McKnight/Tone King collab model going for the "accessible" price of $2500... Lots of good old used guitars out there for nowhere near those prices, just waiting for someone to take them home.

Trogly the guitar investor! Dude thinks he runs the market, take EVERYTHING he says with a truckload of salt. Also this video is nonsense, you need to check the SOLD LISTINGS. The last 3 to sell went for $3600, $3625, and $4000. So they haven't even doubled in value. My issue with Austin is he again thinks he has more say in the market than he does. Then people who own them list them for INSANE prices. Seriously do a test yourself. Watch a Trogly video, wait a week or two then search whatever vintage guitar he covered. There is ALWAYS at least a few listings that are asking asinine prices. Then check sold, they are cut in half.

Let’s face it,, Trogly like what ever he can jack the price up to make a buck off of. There’s a few sub groups on here. True players looking to improve and help other guitarists improve their own talents. And, non guitarists that use RU-vid to hawk their wares while jacking up the prices 300 400%. - Trogly falls into the later. 4 and 5 piece tops??? Really? Never saw any of these in my life. These dreamers will find out sooner or later that they will be left holding a big empty ball. KMs are decent axes but nothing special. The last question- no. Lol.

Hmmm - I wonder if my 1978 The Paul (bought new) will see a similar price jump? I bought it precisely because it wasn't like most Les Pauls back then (i.e. ridiculously heavy!) and was a perfect affordable gigging guitar - really well built, totally reliable, high quality pickups and hardware, and it didn't break your back after wearing it for a couple of hours! 😉I still play it most days, so I wouldn't want to part with it, but it would be fun to see The Paul get the credit it deserves as a great workhorse in the Gibson line-up. 😎

The vintage market is a collector's one, predominantly and as such, vintage classics sit in rooms unplayed, except for those who play where the sound needs to be pristine or in a recording situation. Several guitarists won't take their "classics" on the road which is understandable. They are like works of art. I have always wanted a classic LP but never could justify the price. But to own one good guitar that delivers is worth it and doesn't have to break the bank (for me it was a USA Fender Strat) The guitar player's world is crazy for the desirable Guitar, amp, pedal etc.

Hey Robert, I have a 79KM cherry SB that is completely original, including the frets. It's heavy at 10.8 but it plays great and those cream bobbin HBs sound fantastic. It's my understanding that they made 3,000 of these with the first 1500 having the Custom Made plaques. Mine still has the two small screws in the body but the plaque was missing, I did find a plaque that was on the 335s when they were covering stud holes when installing a Bigsby. They look the same. I bought it in 2005 from a guy that was the second owner and had stopped playing. It had been in his closet for 15 years or so. It literally could pass for 5 years old it's that clean. Anyway, I was at the B3 guitar show in Greenville SC probably 8ish years ago and took it along with a few others to see what kind of offers/trades I could get for them. I ran into Mike Rock who at the time worked for Sam Ash. He offered $2,500 on the spot, even though I only paid $1k for it, I said no. I'm glad I've held onto it. It's a full 2.5lbs heavier than my 72 Goldtop Deluxe LP but it just wails. I know Norlin era gets a bad rap but I love the Deluxe too, those Mini HBs sing!

I think it is in part a generational shift, which happens between the 25-35 year mark for players who grew up with the era reaching ages of disposable income as well as the younger players in their circles influenced by the elder players, whether actually well-known artists those they follow locally. Ten years ago, everyone is bashing the 70s Gibsons and Fenders due to all of the great lawsuit guitars out there coming into their own, but these same folks might pick up a 70-something guitar because they were relatively cheap and had road-earned aesthetics as well as being somewhat vintage. Now that the 70s have aged between 43-53 years depending on the year-model you buy, no one can argue their value as true vintage guitars.

I wonder if the 80' guitars go up in price will that include the Japanese made one will go up in price. Last 2 years I have been turned on to the very well made Aria Pro, Westone, Greco, Antoria, Ibenez, Tokia and many other brands that were made. Some people's opinion that the U.S.A. companies dropped the ball on the quality of the guitars made by companies like Gibson and Fender. A lot of these guitars fall into the category of the law suit Era made guitars. More towards the middle of the 80's some of these company's started making there own designs with the different body Shapes and the pointy headstocks. Since I started getting into these guitars prices have gone up a little because a lot of these guitars are great looking and very good playing guitars. I still like my Fender and Gibson guitars and basses but prices of these guitars have gone up and I am not a collector or a professional musician just want a good instrument to play no matter it says on the headstock, I used to be a bit of a headstock snob but as I get older I just want to play a good guitar.

The market was flooded with weirdly shaped guitars aimed at the heavy metal, thrash, death metal and hair bands. I have a 1985 Ibanez X-Series that I bought brand new for $525 (which was good money back then), the same guitar today is selling for......$650. So you can see.... Here I have a guitar that is 38 years old and it has only increased in value $125. So no, 80's guitars will never match the value of 70's guitars. Ever..... well... maybe in a 100 years. Maybe.

Wanna know the truth? I have tried to love Gibson. Be it a R9 Angus SG a L.P. DC I could keep going. The only one was 74 SG Standard that was decent. I have 1 80's Japan guitar that destroys them. Even over my 85 ESP neck through. I still own Gibsons and Epiphones but I don't love them. I am going to try a Kalamazoo made Heritage next. So yeah many of the 80's Shredder's are Great! And cheap enough to mod.

One of the factors in the price going up for 70's and newer is, the 50's and 60's most of them have been bought and there are only just so many available. If some go on the market they are so much higher the actual working guitar player won't be able to afford them. Only doctors, lawyers and corporate investors would be able to buy them. 🤑

I think a lot of the reason for the value increases besides the obvious like inflation is exactly the influence channels like this and Trogly has on the market. Go back 15 or 20 years and the general consensus what that 70’s and 80’s Gibsons were garbage and the values reflected it. And that really wasn’t the case. Sure there were some bad examples but people have been waking up to the fact that there are good and bad guitars of every era with Gibson. Also the fact that they had pretty different specs to the “golden age” of the 50’s and 60’s Gibsons.

Yes the price increase will happen the same way with the 80s stuff. It's a generational thing.... As people of the next gen come of age, the ones with extra money look to get all of the stuff they wanted as a teen but couldn't afford. The clearest illustration of this is the vintage toy market. However as you get newer, rarity goes down..... I guess nobody can predict, but I think it happens

Thanks Robert, having been in my early teens in the late 70s, they are ok guitars (at best) and have similar qualities to 70s cars. Cool looking, but with issues. I bought my 73 Deluxe in 78 and it's my baby, but I wouldn't rave about it's quality or looks. I almost fell over 10 years ago at asking price for something similar and it's gotten worse. Played professionally in the 80s during the guitar play boom and I fully expect that vintage to go crazy soon. A good early 80s Charvel or Jackson used to be in the mid hundreds, now in the thousands and climbing.

It's 100% gonna happen to '80s guitars, ESPECIALLY the ones that had original Floyds or Schaller Floyds, and also especially the survivors of the "had a thin heel joint but doesn't have a crack forming there" category.

Very interesting video Robert. I wonder about the prices going up being due to multiple things: perhaps folks are realizing that not all the golden area guitars were super great despite the years of rumors, supply vs demand, etc? I think channels like yours and others are waking a lot of people up to great “underdog” guitars, which could be influencing the demand.

I live in the UK where we have very limited access to rarer 70's/80's LP's due to poor exchange rate and extortionate import duties. That said, I previously owned a 1981 Gibson LP 'Heritage 80 Standard' prices for which have also jumped. Personally I don't get why they've jumped... OK with the KM there's still the Kalamazoo link, but at the end of the day - like my previous Heritage 80 - they weigh a ton and aren't very close to original Bursts in any way. 70's Fenders are also shooting up in price for some reason... some are good, some are awful but the Norlin/CBS Arbiter eras are hardly renowned for quality. I reckon that the market for some 80's guitars like US-made Valley-Arts and Swiss-built Levinson Blades will justifiably rise in price because they were quality instruments AND are now 'old'... but if I wanted an old Gibson Les Paul that was relatively authentic and played great, I'd go Murphy Lab.

Back in 1988 I could have purchased a used Les Paul Artisan for $600. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $1550 today. Check Reverb. Average price is about $7500. Now I get a “more rare” guitar can command a premium, but $6000 more than the street price from back in the day? That’s insane. Gibson guitars are way overpriced. I love them but can’t touch anything I might want. Which is sad.

It's hilarious with the Gibson stuff. 10/15/20 years ago, all the 70s guitars were said to be terrible. Yet, Mick Jones of Foreigner, Randy Rhoads and others produced dandy music on them. Now, they're "collectible". The 80s guitars have gone up significantly, depending on what you're looking at.

I have a 1981 Gibson Sonex that, back in 1991, I paid $200. For years, since it's one of Gibson's least sought-after models traditionally, $200-$300 would get you one of these. Now? In mint condition, anywhere from $1400-$3000. Now, mine is heavily played, and the only original parts left are the pots, the body, the neck, and the tailpiece, but even in that condition, you're talking $900, not that I ever plan to sell it, it's getting buried with me. Still, all of the sudden, they're a collector piece, and the price went sky high. Weird.

I dunno. I feel like people have been waiting for 70s era guitars to be “valuable” for a few decades now. Late 50s - 60s stuff was considered valuable and vintage by the 80s. So…25-30 years after the fact. These 70s guitars are 44-53 years old now. Yet still don’t command the types of premiums those 50s/60s guitars did 30+ years ago. I think this is more of a matter of inflation happening to a specific product segment. “New Gibsons are really expensive. Why not pay 1-2k more for a similarly spec’d 70s guitar instead of a new one.”

Everything goes up a little if it's quality. That being said, I think it will still be a while before other companies guitars begin to bring the really high dollar prices. Gibson and Fender a few really in a class by themselves because of how long they have been at it, but even other icons of the industry like Grestch don't bring as much $. Most of the "shredder" guitars were not really high quality. That's part of where the era of custom building came from. I'm 52, been playing since I'm 14, so I remember how they were. Flashy, gnarly, and in many cases crappy. And no, I'm not nostalgic for them. Other things I don't miss about 80's rock: spandex, chest hair (Bon Jovi, Sammy Hagar I'm talking to you guys among others), boys borrowing Mom's makeup and sisters wardrobe. Yea, miss me with all of that. Thank God for the rise of newer styles. Even grunge had flannel 👕. Beats sequins and high heels.

Yes I think 80’s guitars are already jumping up in price ( if they are clean ) I bought an Washburn A10 in 81 ( it’s a 79 model ) brand new in 81 for $500.00, even in todays market with the rise in value rates, that guitar fetches $1,800.00 to $2000.00 on EBay or Reverb. The market dictates the prices that some are willing to pay, prices aren’t always high for Gibson or Fender there are other manufacturers that guitarist want from back catalogues, Washburn ( US or Japan ) made are selling well atm.

I don't really think typical the 80's shredders will jump up in price astronomically. Unless they were made famous by an artist. Even the Jackson RR series guitars are affordable still. Bolt on or set neck. I have a 1993 Jackson RR3 That I paid $900 for in 2011. It is a bolt on neck guitar that came with EMG's and a hard shell case. It is still worth about $900 to the right person today. It has not gone up in value, but it has stayed at the dollar amount. But...always a but, $900 in 2011 is about $1200 today. So it has actually gone down in value. That is the kicker. Inflation has gone overboard in the last couple of years. So dollar amounts then, are no where near dollar amounts now. Hope that made sense. Thanks for the vid. I love your channel and truly enjoy listening to you.

Ive seen what looks like it's gonna be people jumping to old charvels back to the 80s-90s Model Versions. because i started to see Lefty model 475's charvels start to become scarce as back a few years ago you could find alot of the older lefty charvel model 475s, mostly in the sunburst and metallic black. I have a 1990's metallic black charvel model 475, everything is original except i changed out the crappy jackson active pickups and gave them away to a former friend, and had 2 dimarzio fast track 2's and dimarzio super 3 put in them, plan to have the guitar pleked at Sweetwater, the frets replaced with stainless steel frets and a original floyd rose tremolo and locking nut put in with some FU-Tone Upgrades as well as some Sperzel Locking Tuners. Reason why locking tuners and Locking nut both. Well blame it on Henning Pauly. he convinced me that having both is best. so blame him for that. Personally i will never get rid of this guitar because it was my first real guitar. which why i bought a Gator G-tour case to put it in.

Are those sale prices on the Les Pauls, tho? I see that the list/asking prices are way up but are they actually selling at those increased prices? That being said, I used to buy the 80’s-early 90’s Japanese made model series and toothpaste logo Charvels for $200-$300 all day long. At one time I had 3 Charvel 750xl’s that I got for $500 each. Those were made for 1 year only and all 3 of mine had trans tops and the more rare string thru bridge as opposed to the Floyd. Good luck finding any of those for under $1,000-$1,500 in average shape now…

I think the 70's Gibsons might now be going through what 70's Fender went through already. BAck in the 70's we regarded the 70's Fenders as "lesser than" the 60's and 50s guitars. They weren't desirable. Eventually the rarity and high prices of the 50s and 60s Fenders made people look at the 70s guitars as desirable. They lost their stank with a new generation of buyers and collectors, so the prices went way up. In my oipinion, they're still crappy compared the 60s Fenders, but supply and demand and price change the equation. Maybe thats happened with the 70s Les Pauls too. YOu can get a vintage 70s Les Paul for the same price as a current Custom Shop LP. I think people like the idea of that.

About vintage/modern sutff, slightly off your videos topic. A year ago i got myself a fresh out of factory Gibson LP 50s. And it is absolutely, seriously tremendiously killer guitar. They really really nailed it at Gibson with this model. I was comparing it with LP 60s and PRS S2 245, and 50s is 2 inches above if you are looking for a vintage feel and sound. Everyone who does should definitely should check them out. Also Tim Pierce has some quality vids about why modern guitars are much more conviniet if not straight better then vintage one, if you are a player not a collector.
