About National Geographic:
National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Through their world-class scientists, photographers, journalists, and filmmakers, Nat Geo gets you closer to the stories that matter and past the edge of what's possible.
With between 20,000 and 2 million species, diatoms are one of the largest and most important ecological groups of organisms. Through photosynthesis, it’s been estimated that these single-cell algae produce up to one-quarter of the Earth’s oxygen. In addition to their important role within the ecosystem, diatoms also possess uniquely beautiful cell structures. During the Victorian era, this beauty inspired artists to position the jewel-like cells into dazzling arrangements under the lens of the microscope. This unusual art form was almost lost with time, but was recently revived by modern-day microscopist Klaus Kemp. Struck by the beauty and symmetry of diatoms, Kemp worked obsessively for 8 years to perfect his own technique.
In this short film by Matthew Killip, peer into the peculiar art of diatom arrangement and witness a modern-day diatom master at work.

A very thin tungsten needle is mounted on a stand, and it can be dropped a bit, poking into the diatom, then transferred to the arranged slide. Steps can go in microns. This item is called a micromanipulator. While I agree it seems easy once explained, from collecting to sifting out the good ones, to cleaning and then arrangement is a very long processing, yet awarding.

Sharon Keith how old are you guys? Serious question. My gf is 42 and she isn't doing much lately, occasionally she picks up a colouring book but all she ever does is walk the dog and watch netflix. I'm trying to find her a hobby, any suggestions?
@sharonkeith601
@sharonkeith601 7 лет назад
LittleRainGames I don't know what your GF would like but I'll bet she's waiting for you to CHARM her into doing something you like doing. Now what could that be? Swimming, picnicking, backyard BBQ, gospel singing, volunteering? Get up, grab her hand, swing her into your embrace, and romance her, man! Heck, I'm 70 years old and still looking for my Saturday night, music on the radio, dancing in the kitchen, foot stomping, good loving man. So, can you send some old man over this way some weekend? Just lead. She'll follow. Good luck, Romeo.

Diatoms have a unique cell wall that is made from hydrated silica, because of this wall, it allows them to endure emense atmospheric changes with no harm to the organism. A really incredible species.

I watched you on the TV the other night and became fascinated with the subject of Diatom's and would like to know more about this interesting phenomenon. Well at school we simplified the cell draw with just a circle and a doc. To no confuse ya. But 1 cell can be really complex on its own. Uni cel organisms have "mouth" "arm" "foot" "reproductive" part, "stomach" etc etc

The Great Lakes, are in a a jeapordy of dying, due to zebra mussels. The dead mussels are building up toxic BotilismAlgea and killing native plant and fish... Are there corrective algea types, that could consume this? I'm just attempting to think of any possibility, of saving, the only Great Lake System in the World, like ours... The Eco Systems are so very delicately balanced! Any thoughts would be a God send! Thanks for the beauty of your work.
