Well, darn! I only know one answer off the top of my head. You got the seeds for that heirloom winter squash from Danny King and I grew some of those in my garden year before last. They stored beautifully. One actually kept almost a year and a half.

Congrats on 100 shows and 75k subscribers. Y’all deserve way more. I’m a young woman who got interested in gardening about 5 years ago. Unfortunately, all the gardeners in my life had passed away before I could learn from them. I was so happy to find your channel on RU-vid. I’m a serious gardener and I grow a lot of food(or at least I try to) so I grow a “traditional” row garden. It’s so hard to find good info on the this type of gardening out there. Everyone has information on the new/hip trends like raised beds or no till. I’ve learned so much from this show. It’s the perfect combination of old time wisdom/experience with the scientific explanation of it all. I don’t do everything exactly like you all. My soil is a lot more dense clay. But you give great explanations behind your methods that let people use their own judgement on wether or not they should do the same. I also want to compliment your store. I’ve ordered several times and had amazing customer service. I even ordered once during this pandemic and got my package just a couple days later. I tell ya, y’all must have been hustling. Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for all you do!

I am in south Louisiana, and the very first time I ever tried to grow squash on my property the borer's got into them as soon as they started making flowers. I can't even grow a pumpkin for my kids. I tried for 4 years and gave up this spring. I have no clue how to handle them. People just a few miles from me have no problem at all.

When weeding in the garden for light to moderate weed pressure using a long handle tool, do you use the “chop and drop” method of clean up leaving those weeds to compost naturally or do you go to the trouble of picking up and disposing of the weeds you disturbed?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
Kind of depends on the weed. If it's pigweed, we usually remove it from the garden because it goes to seed so early. If it's just a grassy or small weed that hasn't gone to seed, we'll often leave it there to die -- assuming it's warm enough outside to kill it before it tries to root again.

Please talk more about your experience and reasoning behind not pruning tomatoes. I felt alone in thinking they are healthier and more productive without pruning. I've grown beautiful tomatoes for 45 years without pruning or disease. The only tomatoes I ever had trouble with, were heirloom tomatoes. I prefer hybrids

The gypsum we use is pelleted and so we just apply it by itself at bloom set.

I am new to your channel and just bought one of your wheel hoes. I look forward to putting it together and trying it out. My question is in regards to fertilizer. When you say that you use so many lbs of fertilizer per 1000 square feet for potatoes for example, how does that convert into a linear measurement for rows. My garden currently has sixteen 75' rows. If I plant two rows of that in potatoes (or any other vegetable), how do you convert the square footage number to the amount needed for the rows? Thanks.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
Just estimate how wide the row is, and multiply that by the length of the row. It doesn't have to be super exact. If it's a row of potatoes, you can presume it's probably 3-4' wide.

Awesome show guys. Thank you for producing this weekly show. It is such a welcome relief to the filth and political BS on the television. Sorry if this has been asked before, but do you plan to offer any fall potatoes. I get best results with fall planting here in AZ, and seed potatoes have become very difficult to source.

We can't get seed potatoes in the fall. We'll have them available again on the site in December

I love you guys! Congrats on your milestones! I feel like your guys channel grows slower because the organic, heirloom, seed saving, raised beds, smaller set up, "sustainable" etc. seems to be "the thing" and what has been a focus for many... And you all seem more commercial, F1 hybrids, "making" varieties and products. So it seems more big rig and you contradict what a lot of others are doing and saying (heirlooms taste better, etc.) Which is hard for some to hear. I feel like people are catching on to your ways of doing things and... As they grow and want to produce more your ways work! And you have some RU-vidrs giving you more shout-outs like Roots and Refuge showing that you can do both (heirlooms and F1 hybrids).
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
We like doing both -- heirlooms and hybrids. We are completely organic with our pest control methods, but do use some conventional (and organic) fertilizers. We try to meet in the middle and let the viewers decide what would work best for their garden. Thanks for watching!

@@gardeningwithhoss I'll be excited to get more of your stuff next year! People, including myself, are just learning that "meet in the middle" portion and there are a LOT of ways to do things "right".

Travis you are always bring up myths. I shared with you the one my dad made us cover a whole garden with fish 1/2 acre. I saw on utube the other day where this person drove a 12 ga. Copper wire into the tomatoe plant to keep down a fungus. What do you have to say about that!!

There are so many of them out there. I'm a scienitific guy based on my formal education, so I don't have much faith in some of these techniques unless they can be explained scientifically.

Greg, I was wondering if you have noticed a loss of natural life, (earthworms, bacterial life, ECT.) when you use fertilizers such as 20-20-20 on your garden. Many articals I have read have said synthetic fertilizers will kill off natural biology. With Travis's background in biology, and your real world experience, I would be interested in both your viewpoints.

Worm castings are great on a small scale, especially if you raise your own worms. But I just cannot understand the ridiculous prices people pay for little bags of worm poop. They best be growing cannabis if they expect to break even with that stuff, much less get ahead.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 года назад
We got a big load of worm castings one time and had it soil-tested. There wasn't much there. Yes it works for amending soils, but not convinced that it has a lot of nutrient content.

@@gardeningwithhoss exactly, even the very best of it is like .0.5 across the board at the most. It's definitely not the magic solution the hype would have us believe. Yes beneficial microbes like it, but they like old rotten kitchen waste too, for pete's sake. Paying $20/pound or more for it is just plain crazy.
