Little correction, wolverines and badgers are mustelids, that makes them caniformes. So they are eqully releted to hyenas as dogs are. Closer relatives of hyenas are mangoos, meercats and that thing which poops expensive coffe beans
@powersurge_beast that not how you read phylogenetic tree, you have to look where the tree branches out, branches that connect dogs and mustelids are later than ones with whole feliformes. It' s like you and your brother being equally related to your cousin
Hyenas actually “laugh” when they’re afraid, more than anything else. Less when they’re hunting and stuff. The “laugh” is just like us shrieking in fear.
Technically, it's closer to being a mongoose! A feliform, sure, but not a cat. Actually telling people hyenas are closely related to mongooses sounds even more bizarre than to cats ngl.
@@SuperbGorilla Yeah but that doesnt say as much as people think it does. Aftet all, sea lions are more related to dogs then they are to lions...but that doesnt mean the're all that much more similar to wolfs then they are to big cats. There are 16 family's of carnivors, of which cats and dogs only make 2 Since the first split in the carnivora order also has dogs and cats on differsnt sides, we devide the other 14 famelies as being on the side with the dogs or cats. Thats all that Caniforms and Feliforms means really, nothing more.
I mean, hyenas are not evil, and ganging up is a evil wya to describe the power of friendship xD Hyenas get so much crap when they're not nearly the worst out there... They're just trying to survive.
There is no real "evil" in the animal kingdom BESIDES humans. Humans are the only animal capable of evil because we can all survive without killing things unnecessarily or each other, but we still choose to do so anyway. Animals have to kill necessarily to survive. We do too to a certain extent, but not nearly as much as we think we do.
Correction: wolverines and badgers are mustelids (weasels), which are Caniform carnivorans, so wolverines and badgers are closer to dogs than to cats or hyenas.
@@theknightwithabadpictotall7639 It's a side effect of the females having such a high amount of testosterone, which was developed to aid with breaking up bones as part of their own diet and for preparing them for younger members of the pack to feed on. I'm guessing that benefit ended up outweighing the reproductive downside.
Even though I'm a Brazillian, I never saw a Maned-Wolf or Lobo Guará. But it is proudly appearing in our 200 Reais Banknote. Unfortunately, I only got copies of them signed by our disastrous former Economy Minister. Language Fact: The plural of "Real" is "Reais", so... One Real, 2/5/10/20/50/100/200 Reais. And this "Real" stands not for Real, but for "Royal".
@@harry.t9523 Though Harley is more associated with the hyenas, it was the Joker who had them first. Once Harley was introduced to the mythos, he left the care of the pets to her, so she has the stronger bond. Which makes SO MUCH sense because of their matriarchal nature
@@Sweetroll_Wolfieactually they did! It was a Pokémon short on the pokemon RU-vid leading up to sword and shield release! They have “dog” like pokemon that LOOK LIKE MIGHTYANTAS! All three of them!
@@Sweetroll_Wolfiecross that, my memory was a lie! It was Pokémon Generation, episode 6….. they look NOTHING like any pokemon besides from the Beta sprites….
Fun fact about hyenas, the Giant Hyena (Pachycrocuta) is said to resemble the Spotted Hyena in appearance but is still considered Megafauna due to be much bigger physically. And on the subject of actual canines, genetic research on the Dire Wolf is actually more closely related to Jackals, Extinct Zoo did video on that a while back. Now that I think about it, we've never really gotten a Jackal Pokemon yet, have we?
@@argentum1738 Technically yes, but also no. Lucario and Riolou are based on Anubis, who is interpreted as a Jackal in modern day due to his black coloration and the simplistic-like design of Egyptian hieroglyphic art, but archeological studies show Anubis is more based on the Golden Wolf (a now rare, possibly extinct) canid that lives/lived in Egypt.
Not sure if Clint's Reptiles would agree with this. Mustelids like wolverines and badgers are on the canindae side but as you said, also have feline traits Ive always thought of them like the real-life Cat-dog but i need to go rewatch Clint's Hyena video now
@@EpicRandomness555 They are. Mustelids belong in the Caniforme group along with seals, bears, and dogs. Just because they have supposed “feline” traits doesn’t mean anything. That’s like saying a Gharial is related to dolphins because they both got big schnoz’s used for catching fish.
I could totally see a hypothetical Mightyena evolution have different stat spreads depending on gender. Like the females have a higher attack compared to the males.
Drawin it. Gonna be a totally masculine monster Chad Pokemon with 100% female rate. And your beloved male mightyena from your 2004 copy of emerald has the choice to evolve into her just like how marills work :)
To quote some random Tumblr post I can't remember (and thus unfortunately can't properly attribute a more specific source), hyenas are dog software run on cat hardware :P
the og post wasnt technically about hyenas it was about foxes, they're cat software running on dog hardware with dolphin soundfonts installed. but yes hyenas are the opposite with dolphin soundfonts installed lol.
@@Beefaroni_Bert Oh yeah, guess it was foxes first. Dunno why I thought it started with the yeens rather than the foxes considering how much more popular foxes tend to be online, hehe :P
If we're talking about kinship, it's true that Hyenas are more closely related to Felidae than to Canidae. But within the Feliforms, they are closer related to Mongooses than to true cats. Basically, you could say that hyenas are like overgrown meerkats.
Not gonna mention Poochyena's tasmanian devil traits or how the split mane, red nose and laugh are inspired by clowns? (Another banger and strike against hyena hate🧡)
0:50 I think Lockin confused behavior for phylogeny here, because - although one is feliform and the other is caniform - both hyenas and wolverines are bone-crushing predators.
Hyena hierarchy is not as cutthroat as suggested, There was one Hyena who formed a alliance with other low ranking females, Overthrew the Matriarch and then when in power she made sure the females who helped were taken care of. Something ive noticed in Matriarchal animals, Its more about Social skills than pure strength most of the time Male Hyenas are significantly less social than the females Elephants, The herds are matriarchal while the adult males are often wandering alone Orca pods are lead by females and males are often only allowed on the outer most parts of the pod , unless there babies You can even see this is Patriarchal animals, Female lions are a lot more social than male lions
Despite being based on hyenas, their canine-like features make them more often seen as "dogs" than cats. (and as you mentioned, it didn't help by them them naming the 1 stage a canine-sounding name)
Your point? They’re still not related to dogs. Koala bears look like bears but they’re not. Just because an animal looks like another animal it doesn’t mean they share the same family tree
@@bennu547 you do know this is a fictional world and most real world animals, aside background ones in older media, do not exist. I never said they were dogs, that some will still see it as a "dog" or wolf, due to it's design looking like one than that of a hyena (which don't have the extra furry appeance and fluffy tail and such) Perhaps you should also go and ask Pokemon Co why Ratatta went from being a Rat to a Mouse despite it still being a rat and retaining "rat" in it's name.
@@bennu547 except pokemon are based off of various things like eevee and its eeveelutions for example. Mightyena can be based off of both dogs and hyenas. It doesn't have to biologically make sense
Fun Fact: hyenas do what they do because they evolved to fill the niche that dogs have in other areas. In the world of cats, there used to be no dogs. None whatsoever. Dogs originate in North America. So, the hyena filled the roll, since they originate in central Eurasia. Their claws can't retract and are used for running, not for hunting. They hunt more like dogs, having adapted for endurance rather than for speed. They were the only dog-like canids on that land mass until the land bridge connected the Americas with Eurasia. Not to be like....advertising other youtubers in the comments...but....if you want a LOT more info on this subject you should check out "Carnivora - In a World With Cats, How Do Dogs Survive?" by Clint's reptiles
My love for Poochyena and Mightyena definitely stems from my obsession with Hyenas I JUST THINK THEY LOOK SO CUTE (it's something about their muzzles i think) Thank you for finaly making a video about those pokemon
Don't forget the female hyena have a pseudo-weenie and pseudo-balls. :') Striped hyenas are so pretty, especially when their manes get long and mohawk like. Mighyena is cool, but I really want a more hyena-like Pokemon. A red-wolf Pokemon would also be cool... and maybe some new berry or fruit Pokemon based on the fruit they eat.
Mushu is a dragon. Or food. So it’s fine to call your not dog a dog but it’s fine to call the same not dog a dragon. Or mushu pork. Nevertheless facts don’t change because your fragile feelings can’t accept reality
Welcome to another episode of "Lockstin tricks you into watching a video about some real life thing by making it look like it is about Pokémon" Gotta be one of my favorite genres
I think it's the same as Eevee being a generic mammal. Poochyena is the dark type of that small fluffy mammal trope, and then it evolved into a bigger version of generic dark type mammal. Eevee is my favorite and when I was a kid and gen 3 was still new, I was obsessed with Poochyena and Mightyena and I always made fakemons of them with different types that were basically equivalents of Eeveelutions but add dark type.... I really love biology, creature designs, and Pokemon, so I always nerd out with things like that lmao
@@Samsen_ It's more that it's not the best comparison. Eevee is meant to be completely ambiguous, its designer outright said they didn't want it to look like a cat, dog, fox, or any particular mammal, and from its name, descriptions, and the like they keep that consistent. Poochyena and Mightyena are definitely meant to be hyenas with a little canine, they have multiple traits unique to them (particularly brown hyenas) both visually and in their bios, and their names outright include the word 'hyena'. There's no ambiguity intended in what's they're meant to be, it's almost spelled out what was intended for both. And while both are fictional creatures, that doesn't mean there wasn't a difference in direction. Purugly is also a fictional creature, but it's clearly a housecat with some stereotypically ugly traits included, it doesn't look like an ambiguous mammal like Eevee and you can easily tell it's a cat. Both Poochyena and Mightyena are more akin to it, the hyena is the primary focus, it's not meant to be an ambiguous mammal.
Other Pokenerds in comments be like, "Factually" about fictional creatures lmfao. I love being a part of this community it's so funny. Thanks for the entertainment 🤣😂
12:23 this line is wild because I was about to tell all of you that the spotted hyena is my personal favorite hyena and not tell you the exact reason 💀
I actually watched some videos on actual hyenas a couple moths ago. The hierarchy and even physiology (yes, I know about that). Anyway, this is another MIGHTY cool video!
The Hyenas in Lion King did nothing wrong except allow a charismatic leader to trick them into doing his dirty work in exchange for rights they should have always had, and I'll die on that hill. Also it's because of them that I fell in love with Spotted Hyenas as a species, and thus why Mightyena is my favorite Dark Type despite being closer to other Hyena species. Also Also never understood why people don't realize they're hyena pokémon despite having "yena" in the name (and often mispronounce that part of it too)
Didn’t watch the vid yet but hyenas aren’t dogs or cats there more related to mongooses and meerkats. I feel like the dark type is given because of the way they are depicted in culture. In reality lions actually steal from them way more often.
Feliform does not mean felid or feline, it just means the animal falls more into the cat-like than dog-like option; taxonomy only recognizes a binary, cat-like or dog-like. Calling Mightyena a cat is literally the same as saying Urshifu and Pangoro are dogs: it's not a cat, it's a hyena
I've always thought of the carnivora families in a line, ranging from dogs to cats: Dogs, Foxes and relatives Bears Raccoons and relatives Mustelids Mongeese, Civets and relatives Hyenas Cats
I heard there was a study that found a Female Hyena rise to leadership role in her pack from the bottom without fighting! She just made the right friends and kept them loyal, thusly, if you messed with her you risked fighting all her friends. I did find one that stated something to the effect of: Mother Hyena's prefer to protect the young cubs from their bigger siblings.
Fun fact: the name "Gnoll" in D&D used to denote the mixed species which came from the union between gnomes and trolls. Only later did it come to be used to describe Yeenoghu's accidental hyena-folk children
Mightyena is a cat, enough said. Jokes aside, always nice to see one of my favourite gen 3 mons get some of the spotlight Also, that drow comparison is so accurate
I've always known that hyenas are not dogs and it's pretty obvious that Mightyena is more of a hyena than anything else, but at the same time I still think there's a little bit of gray wolf/African wild dog mixed in the design inspiration too. The word "pooch" means dog; it's right there in Poochyena's name.
Fun Fact: a factoid is, by definition, something that resembles a fact but is not a fact. It really bugs me when someone uses the word to mean "trivia fact."
Factoid has two definitions, that's the second definition. The first is "An insignificant or trivial fact". Trivia, of course, being the root of trivial, so, quite literally, potentially trivia facts lol.
@@andrewolson5471 sure, I guess, if you're that persnickety about definitions of random words that you, personally, dislike. It's not that deep, lil bro
I first learned the “hyenas are closer to cats than they are to dogs” fact from a Batman show Catwomam was fighting someone who was using hyenas to attack her, and Catwomam was able to pacify them because she can like control cats or something (I know that’s not a power she has, but that’s kind of the only explanation for why the hyenas obeyed her)
idk if you brought this up in the video (typing as i watch) But fun fact is that Cheetah Cubs actually evolved to resemble Hyena cubs. As Cheetahs often get the short stick, sure they are fast but they can’t maintain that speed and get gassed pretty easily, and they can’t carry their prey up into trees for safety. So often times there cubs are targeted… however by looking like Hyena cubs it causes a predator to rethink things as they don’t wanna mess with a Hyena.
Not true 😅 Tons of predators will take out hyena cubs if given opportunity! And they can SMELL its not a hyena. Cheetah cubs actually blend in with the environment to not be spotted as easily. Cheetahs typically hunt by night and try to avoid territories of other predators just to avoid other predators! This actually causes them to have little confrontation but when they slip up and come face to face with another predator they are DOOMED
Hyenas are actually closer to mustelids, being the group that includes mongooses, weasels, otters, martens, badgers and wolverines. Also if you look up what kinds of sounds a mongoose like a meerkat are like, they aren't that far off from that of the "laughing" hyenas do.
No. They. Aren’t Mustelids include weasels, otters and badgers but NOT mongoose Mongoose, cats and hyenas are on the feline side of the Carnivora Order.
Hyenas are cool, but Hawaiian honeycreepers are some of the coolest birds, and not many people know about them. Can we have an Oricorio video to show off how awesome they are?
If there's one takeaway from this video everyone should know, it's that Lockstin's real name is Robert. But of course you would only know that if you paid attention to the Helix mattress ad in the middle of the video.
When I was a kid, these two were just the closest thing to a wolf Pokemon we had, in my eyes. I never really payed attention to the "hyena" in their names as they didn't look like hyenas at all. I still think they're closer to wolves or canine creatures in appearance, honestly.
Forgot to mention the important part of "why" hyenas looks so much like dogs - its a process called "convergent evolution" when a species finds themselves adapting to the same ecoligical niche and end up developing very similar traits.
I remember learning that hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs from 2004's The Batman show. I still bring it up whenever the situation presents itself!
I like to imagine a savanna, in which along with the usual Pokémon of the Safari Zones such as Rhyhorn, Tauros, Kangaskhan, and Doduo, is also inhabited by the evolutionary lines of Mightyena, Donphan, Farigiraf, Liepard, Pyroar, Zebstrika, and Espathra.
I first learned about hyenas being feline from watching that batman animated movie when Catwoman takes control of Jokers pack of Hyenas and literally tells him that same fact while he's stunned.. 🙃
Fun fact about hyenas in culture. The idea of a wereheyena is not someone who turns into a heyena but a heyena that turns into a person in some parts. They are seen as evil wizards, known as Bouda. A word often targeted against blacksmiths as their work with fire is traditionally seen as dealing with magic. Saying they cast spells and curses and eat and rob the corpses of people. Bouda is used as a slur, and in Ethiopia is used as one especially in an antisemitic way against the Jewish population of Ethiopia. As blacksmithing and working with kilns is such a common career for Jewish Ethiopians, who have long been discriminated against by the Christian majority population of Ethiopia.
The is a tradition in one culture that says hyenas eat evil sports and there is a tradition of someone feeding the hyena to attract them to their towns so they can do this. One of the most positive portrayals of hyena I’ve ever heard I just wish I remembered where in Africa they do this.
Whenever I would see “Mightyena”, I would always think, “It sure doesn’t look like any Hyena I’ve ever seen.” Then again, until now, I only really knew of the one. While I couldn’t really understand why that name in particular, I always figured that, by its design, as well as Poochyena, it was simply an attempt at bringing in something that resembled a wolf. The way it was often portrayed in the anime only helped me to further see it that way. I think that that’s likely why, whenever I’d see a game playththrough of what are supposed to be canines that include the two, it never crosses my mind that it might be a bit questionable.
You're stronger then me by being able to talk about Hyenas in-depth without mentioning the pseudo-phallus thing! Hyenas are very cool, I feel like they don't get enough appreciation outside of their aesthetics.
1:11 that carniovra diagram is outdated as skunks are no longer classified under the mustelidae family. They are however members of the museloidea superfamily, so a they're only a step or 2 removed
I have to make a correction. Wolverines and badgers are mustelids which are within Caniformes, making them closer to dogs then they are to hyenas and cats.
My Pokesona is a Mightyena I love your knowledge thank you because when I tell others about it being a hyena mostly related to a cat then dog they say no XD It's a hyena not a pupper sorry guys! Hyenas are my favorite animal I always wanted to study them when I was a kid :)
i'm not into pokemon, but watching this was pretty cool! i'm pretty much obssessed with hyenas so watching this video made me super happy with the hyena facts sprinkled in it. hyenas are pretty misunderstood and are genuinely an amazing animal in the animal kingdom, so it's nice that you shared some facts but also its stereotypes as well :D
Hyena "laughter" makes me laugh sometimes. Once in the middle of work I randomly thought about it and burst out laughing for almost a minute before I calmed down this did not help my image to a few of my co workers as they were afraid of me for one reason or another and I never really understood why.
Hey im glad you finally got around to covering this Lockstin!! You probably don't remember but i suggested the idea of talking about Poochyena/Mightyena's wolf/hyena resemblance. All the way back when u streamed New Pokemon Snap. So thank you for finally getting around to it. Also, maybe just me, but the line still eems more wolf like imo. But hey, just me in my opinion.
It's a slight simplification, but yeah they are part of the family that are essentially classed as 'feline-like' which includes things like mongoose, fusa and cheetahs (yeah cheetahs aren't true big cats) but they are much cats as something like a meerkat is (which is also in the same family)
Mightyena has always been a personal favorite of mine. I admit however, that I originally failed to recognize the obvious name references. I always thought Mightyena was a wolf of some sort, even if watered down a bit. Later on, I realized the name is literally a mix of 'Mighty' and "Hyena'. The problem I have is that Hyena's all have a very distinct body proportion with their slightly odd looking necks and what almost feels like a hunchback design. Yet Mightyena looks very natural and wolf-like. Additionally, the defining feature of a Hyena, their laugh, is lost on Mightyena. It does NOT have that creepy cackle. In the video games, its "cry" KIND of sounds like it, but in the anime it doesn't do that at all. (Unless I'm remembering wrong) But yes, I love my doggo who isn't actually a doggo, but is yet still a doggo in my heart. haha It's a shame Mightyena has such lackluster stats in the games. Mediocre stats fitting of early routes, a typing that doesn't do much to save that. Move pool can be interesting when you introduce breeding options, but otherwise quite lack luster. A mega form or evolution would be amazing. And with Legends ZA, maybe a mega is on the horizon? Give it a secondary typing that is relevant and we in business.
