These Pokemon Shouldn’t be in Scarlet and Violet. 

It annoys me so much that some pokemon reward you so much for simply sending them out (ex: Zacian, Calyx-s), but Regigigas still has Slow Start for "balance"

It honestly feels like they intentionally designed Zacian to be the single best pokemon in a dynamax format

In my opinion, an unhealthy aspect of the Urshifu twins is that there is no way of knowing which form is coming while in team preview. It’s so unfun to get surprised with a win condition late game when you had no way of preparing for which form was coming other than inferring based on the opponent’s team composition.

Honestly I just want a VGC format that doesn't have legendaries/mythics. The sword and shield meta before DLC and restricted mons was so much fun

That analysis about Regieleki was absolutely brilliant, but I can't believe you missed another very important fact. It being Electric type means it can't be paralyzed ever, so even with Prankster, strategies to shut down fast pokes with Thunder Wave and Stun Spore are completely nullified against it.

Gen 8 just decided to drop the Nukes of Pokemon while all the other gens were still using bows n arrows

The thing about removing one is that Gamefreak would have to remove the others as well. Like if they remove Xerneas, it'd only make sense that they also removed Yveltal. Or for Venusaur they'd have to remove all gen 1 starters - and how could they live without the wonderchild Charizard?

Answer: don’t cut any Pokemon, just ban the overpowered ones in competitive or make multiple different categories or rulesets

Also everyone remember many of these analysis are very vgc oriented, some mons that wolfe might want banned could be perfectly balanced in singles and the reverse for others

They wouldn't remove certain pokemon without removing their counterparts too, which means that banlists are the more healthier option imo

I genuinely do not know how Xern/ Eleci can be balanced going forward. The others feel like they could be brought in line with some small changes (no crown for zacian, no fusion for calyrex, new ability or removing the signature move for ushifu). It would be a shame if gen 8 set a trend of powercreeping the strongest mon of the current gen to make new ones viable.

I love Smeargle - I think it should be banned in competitive or ladder play but should be present in games. It is fun to use in normal gameplay.

Honestly I liked that one formate with a banlist, rotated banlists like that could make it so competitive doesn't have to always deal with unfair mons being added, plus simply gives the main game a chance for more formats to be run at the same time.

One problem I have with how they’ve been handling Pokémon for the past few years is that every game they add a new gimmick which they then abandon by the next gen. I think dynamax is gonna be the worst example yet when the new games come out because so many new Pokémon this gen were balanced around the dynamax format. In the same way that most Pokémon that got cool mega evolutions stopped being used when they phased it out.

I don't play competitively, but I took one look at Zacian and thought: Jesus, this is more broken than Mega Rayquaza.

I feel like you forgot something about what makes Zacian and Calyrex so overpowered. If Calyrex Dynamaxes and uses Max Phantasm, that drops the opponent's defense by 1 stage, which makes Zacian's Behemoth Blade so much more dangerous. Calyrex being just a little faster than Zacian means that you can just hit with Calyrex's max moves and then ensure a KO with Behemon Blade that your opponent could have survived otherwise.

A lot of the centralized meta and power creep in standard play is why I play lower tiers when I play Gen 8. A lot of lower tier metas are more balanced. In particular UU is basically OU but without the main threats of that tier (seriously there’s so few bans in the transition), but it’s enough for the tier to be that much more dynamic. ZU is also a really fun tier, and is one of my favorite tiers in all of Pokémon. It’s really underrated, and more people should try it

Honestly I think zacian’s rusted sword will get removed in gen 9 just like how the red and blue orbs were removed in gen 8 This would make zacian far less broken in vgc IMO

HOW THIS AGED - EACH POKEMON IN ORDER (VGC REGULATION D) 1. (Regieleki) Still fantastic but Transistor was nerfed and electroweb isn't a great strategy anymore so it's less consistent 2. (Zacian) Not legal in VGC. Still absolutely ridiculous in Ubers. Nerfed a bit though so not an instant win button (it's not in AG anymore) 3. (Calyrex-Shadow) Not legal in VGC but unchanged. Terastallization makes it even harder to deal with. Instant win button. Banned to AG. 4. (Urshifu) DEAR GOD THIS THING IS EVERYWHERE IN VGC AND UNSTOPPABLE. THERE IS ZERO COUNTERPLAY. HELP. 5. (Rillaboom) Fakes out and then stops being a threat. Pretty easy to deal with. The removal of Grassy Glide really neutered it. 6.(Grimmsnarl) Fell completely out of usage. Grimmsnarl isn't seen at ALL in Regulation D. Screens just aren't a good strategy anymore. Don't know why. Incineroar, Smeargle, Venusaur, and Xerneas are not in SV.

Venusaur is a Kanto starter so it's one hundred percent coming back. And in most of the recent games, they love to find ways to bring back every single legendary pokemon they can so I feel like most of these things happening is unlikely. Also I feel like they will probably bring back Smeargle for Scarlet and Violet because Spain is the home quite a few famous artists, most notably Pablo Picasso, so Game Freak would probably want to represent that part of Spanish history in some way. I don't think the competitive scene has ever been too high on Game Freak's list of priorities when they are designing a new game. They'll toss you guys a bone in the balancing department sometimes, but they will always sacrifice the stability of the competitive scene for the chance to add some new, flashy and overpowered legendary or to bring back starter pokemon.

This may be a hot take but I think that they should put everything in, every gimmick every pokemon, but have rulesets that restrict what you can use. Similar to the different series in gen 8.

Pokémon has been power creeping for its entire life. In the games, the cards, heck, even in Unite. It’s seems their general solution to a broken/unbalanced thing is just to add an even stronger thing. They “fixed” dragon by adding fairy, for instance. So, I wouldn’t be shocked if they make the next batch of legends just as ridiculous as Zacian and Eleki, rather than actually cutting other ones.

Personally I still don’t think any Pokemon should be completely unavailable in the game - I’m still here because I want to “catch ‘em all” like I did in the 90s. What we need is games that let you have every ‘mon, but competitive formats that are more restrictive.

I’m surprised Lando T didn’t make the list despite the thumbnail. Amazing offenses and typing, 2 very useful immunities, has intimidate, access to Swords Dance, Earthquake and U turn and to top it off isn’t even a restricted mon, it’s very existence invalidates normally viable picks like Garchomp and Arcanine and is absolutely unhealthy

I've been saying all generation that the idea to cut Pokemon from games is not, ON IT'S OWN, a bad idea. I'd like to see Scarlet/Violet cut a handful of staples from all tiers so we can see unique metagames develop every generation.

I've been subscribed for so long, and it is insane how amazing the video quality has become. Wolfey eels like a professor!

To your final notes, if they were to implement drowsy into the game I believe both Venusaur and Smeargle would be less viable or at least far less popular in their respective roles as a result.

New Video Idea: Wolfey balances Fairy type from A-tier to C-tier to D-tier. Basically opposite of his Ice and Bug videos, but also taking into consideration that Fairy can easily be balanced by making types like Ghost and Psychic resist it, while also having Ghost and Dark be supereffective against it

The talk on Zacian makes me think about how overshadowed Zamazenta crowned is. People forget it still has 130 base attack (basically the same as Solgaleo) and 128 (A tad slower than Mewtwo) base speed. Having 145 in defences and 92 HP makes it pretty bulky too! (It’s no Giratina-A by any means but…) Just a shame it lacked the tools it needed to truly succeed in this generation (like body press or some reliable recovery).

Zacian's an easy fix: lose the stat boosts. Its stats were good enough already, have the crowned forme give it the steel typing and a new ability at the cost of its item and bam - a still really good Pokemon. Xerneas is also an easy fix: stagger Geomancy's boosts so that it gains its sp.defence on the first turn, then the sp.attack and speed on the second turn. Because it would no longer be a charging move, Power Herb would no longer apply. Forcing it to be a two turn thing opens it up to counterplay and disruption but the payoff is still good enough that its worth playing into and building a team around. As for the rest, I got nothing. Changing Regieleki would break its theming. Everything about Calyrex is absurd. Urshifu is on a perpetual knifedge of being overpowered and wholly mediocre, same with Rillaboom. Everything great about Incineroar fits it so well that you just wouldn't WANT to take away its toys... Shout out to that thumbnail bait though.

This generation was very reactive, favoring dynamic match reading ability over in the moment strategy. Moreso than pretty much any other modern generation, the prevailing theme for gen 8 was and is "getting momentum and holding onto it," rather than "continuously fighting for momentum." Dynamax as a concept is a microcosm of that.

It'd be interesting to hear what gen 8 pokemon would be good to see in gen 9. Thinking about pokemon who didn't work well in this meta but could shine with the new mechanics or pairings for scarlet and violet.

You are saving me so much time and brain power analyzing these games so thank you. I’m such a fan I’m scared of playing these games as to what will come of them. This is especially true when you’re trying to play online and memorize rules, and they just switch them up. It’s so refreshing to have someone looking at the games specifically from the perspective of PVP.

I would have to vote for the absolute menace you put in the thumbnail. Lando T has been the poster child of power creep IMO since he was released. Even though it was his regular form that was banned to ubers (i am going based on smogon OU since i have very limited VGC experience), Lando T was polarizing for years but was never banned because "it wasnt fast enough" or "it has a 4x weakness to a common attacking type" when in reality its combination of bulk, enough speed to make scarf very threatening, and absurd attack levels on TOP OF intimidate making it survive hits it shouldn't, made it just ludicrously strong and almost necessary for a team to even compete because the other player would most certainly have one. If you ever watch FalseSwipeGaming and their history of competitive pokemon videos (highly recommend especially if ones like this from Wolfey are interesting), youd notice that once the games hit gen 5, half the roster became completely unviable due to the monstrous levels of power creep. Lando T was the front runner and captain of that ship IMO. Sorry for the long comment, great video Wolfey, love the content, I hate Lando T, Peace.

Did i miss something, or did you never bring up removing Landorus-T? In my opinion he is on par with incineroar, he is better than inc in singles, but a little worse in doubles. They do the same thing but for different formats.

What I really like about this video and the breakdown of broken aspects of Pokémon is that these Pokémon don’t necessarily need to be omitted but it opens the conversation of what could or should be nerfed if these Pokémon stick around in Gen 9

Instead of flat-out removing Venusaur from Scarlet and Violet, I would just remove its ability to use sleep powder (Edit:) in VGC, bc as an overall pokemon it's really good, especially as a gigantamax and/or support option for Groudon and Torkoal

Holy cow, the segues/transitions are like butter - super smooth! On the note of Wenusaur, I agree that playstyle is problematic, but I think it's moreso the nature of sleep and sleep powder than Wenusaur itself - changes to either (or both) would be ideal because there will always be other things to take wenusaur's place.

I don't do competitive but I'd agree I liked 8 for how battling felt Even without D-maxing I though battling was fun. TMs and TRs, free move relearning, the Isle tutor moves, lots of held items, etc

I’d like to see a lot of the restricted Pokémon left behind. Besides the ones that you mentioned kyogre and groudon always have such an influence on the meta when they’re legal so it would be nice to play in a restricted format without them

you know, i really, really, really LOVED xerneas' design when i got to see her in X. however, when i started to get into competitive pokemon last year, holy sh*t i have never despised a "considerably" long-cherished character (X is almost 9 yrs old already) THAT fast 🤣 i still really love her design though; but that's like 20% of her in my eyes now, and the 80% goes to how stupidly broken her shenanigan is in vgc 😂

I won't mind having any of these not return, but since they will likely return eventually, I think addressing their brokenness head-on is still worthwhile. Here are some ways I think would be interesting: * These are all assuming Dynamax is gone. Regieleki - Removing its access to Electroweb and lowering the boost that Transistor gives to be the same as Aerialate and Pixelate should make it much more manageable but still a solid threat on Electric spam teams. I don't even want to think of this thing getting access to Hidden Power ever in the future though. Zacian - Just remove Rusted Sword from the game. Base form Zacian should be significantly easier to manage. If the Rusted Sword has to stay, then making it so that it can be Tricked or Knocked Off to revert Zacian to its base form would give some nice counterplay. The big one would be to just make its stats something reasonable. Maybe make is slower when its in Crowned Form like Zamazenta. Or heck, even change its type to Steel and Fighting like Zamazenta; I have no idea what makes this thing a Fairy type in the first place. Zacian is such a colossal failure in balancing that you can weaken in a dozen different ways. Calyrex-Shadow - Drop Astral Barrage to 110 base power and lowering its speed to 120 would make it more manageable in restricted formats. Urshifu - Give it the Gale Wings treatment and make it so that Unseen Fist only works at full health, that way players are rewarded with its powerful ability if they can keep it healthy. Lowering the base power of Surging Strikes to 20 base power and Wicked Blow to 70 would also help if you wanted to go even further. Rillaboom - This one was so easy I'm mad they didn't do it originally: Rillaboom doesn't get Grassy Glide but Tapu Bulu does. Also lower the base power of Grassy Glide to 60. This makes Rillaboom and Tapu Bulu have notable advantages and disadvantages over the other as Grassy Terrain setters. Grimmsnarl - I don't know, it might be fine without Dynamax, but we'll have to wait and see. Incineroar - Just change its Hidden Ability from Intimidate to Vital Spirit. It would still be a good pivot, but it wouldn't be the omni-present nuisance it is now. Xerneas - Power Herb not working with Geomancy is the obvious one, but I think might be too harsh. Xerneas is really the poster child for the Fairy type being overpowered, so fixing the Fairy type might be enough. Venusaur - This thing should not get Sleep Powder AND Chlorophyll. It invalidates practically every other Chlorophyll user because of it. Removing Sleep Powder from its move pool would give Pokemon like Lilligant and Vileplume to have notable advantages over it. Smeargle - lmao, how is Moody still in the game? Just completely scrap it. It adds nothing.

I havent watched your video fully yet, but I would like to see changes to the ice type at the very least to be better defensively at least against flying and maybe water. I would also like to see pokemon that are kind of never picked to become meta (by adding a hidden ability/different form based on the area like galarian weezing (I loved that pokemon)). Better movesets for pokemon that are not used because of their shallow movepools could make them more unique in a sense. Also changes to the ranking. I have been pokeball rank in sword and shield for a while because I just CANNOT find other players. Legit. The 4th rank lol. I would also love to see maybe a new version of meganium. I love meganium, but she has been excluded in 8th gen.

The vast majority of this list would be handled simply by not allowing legendaries into competitive formats. I get that they try to keep things interesting years after release, but it seems crazy to have everyone using insanely broken Pokemon

I'm 100% convinced that most Pokemon aren't designed with the competitive scene in mind. They just want to make a "super cool and powerful Pokémon that everyone will love because it's soooo cool and strong and aaaaawesome" The only balance is a newer cooler and stronger mon that makes the previous one look like a little bi...baby...like a little baby.

While I understand that it's not really problematic in doubles formats, Dracovish is absolutely disgusting in singles. Between Strong Jaw and the damage bonus for attacking first, Fishious Rend is functionally a 255 BP STAB move. In singles Dracovish can get away with a Choice Band, and against that level of power most Pokemon are utterly invalidated. Your only options are to bring a water immunity, or never allow Dracovish in against a slower Pokemon. That's just incredibly restrictive.

Great vid, My biggest annoyance is the introduction of legendries into ranked play, considering at the moment you can have 2 restricted legendries and then have as many trio type legendries or ultra beasts, you can just stack your team with them and away you go. Removing them from the equation is a great idea because other Pokémon get to have the chance to participate. Another problem mainly with your take on Venusaur is that Gen 8 made Venusaur a great shiny hunting asset, been able to use sleep powder and false swipe was a great addition for any shiny hunter. Removing it from the game doesn't just affect VGC but other Post game tasks.

Here are some rough ideas on how to fix everyone featured in this wideo: - Regieleki: Make Transistor only a 1.3* boost (I guess you'd also have to apply that to Dragon's Maw and _maybe_ Steely Spirit / Steelworker), and nerf Electroweb to 80 or 85% accuracy. - Zacian: Adjust the stats a bit to give it 128 base Speed, 160 base Attack, with 20 of those points going into Sp. Atk (a 10 point nerf overall), nerf Blade to base 90, and make Intrepid Sword work sorta like Radical Red's Blademaster, but without the crits. To keep it in line with Zamazenta, just take 10 points out of his Sp. Atk. - Calyrex-Shadow: Giving Astral Barrage (+ Glacial Lance), the Groudon & Kyogre treatment would be a good place to start. Also, adjusting Spectrier's stats to move some stuff out of Sp. Atk and Speed and into its Attack stat would mean those changes should also apply to Shadow Rider, effectively nerfing 2 broken Pokemon for the price of one. - Urshifu: Nerf Wicked Blow from 80 to 70, and make Unseen Fist only apply to fist-based attacks. - Rillaboom: Just make Grassy Glide base 55 to 65, and I think that's all you'd need to do. - Grimmsnarl: I think he's fine, honestly. - Incineroar: I think they could make more abilities immune to Intimidate (maybe Big Pecks, Propeller Tail / Stalwart, Unaware, etc.), or maybe even make some abilities protect both Pokemon from Intimidate. Otherwise just remove Parting Shot from its legal learnset or nerf it in a similar vain to Intimidate. - Xerneas: Make it so that Power Herb no longer enables insta-Geomancy. That's all you'd really need to do. - Venusaur: I think just implementing a slightly altered version of drowsy from Legends would solve a lot of stuff. - Smeargle: See Venusaur. Maybe have more moves that Smeargle isn't allowed to use. This one's a bit more wacky, but what if they made it so that only Grass-type Pokemon could put Pokemon fully to sleep with Spore, while non-Grasses like Smeargle would only make them drowsy? (Oh yeah, removing Moody from the game entirely would also be good too)

The way you solve all of this is to add a battle feature to Pokemon Home. All the competitive battles take place via Home. The reason why you solve all of this is that you wouldn't have to release the legendaries over and over again.

I am kind of obsessed with cetitan. I've already speculated a bit for competitive Cetitan will be busted when it becomes a water type and not ice type due to terastalizing. (and it used liquidation in the trailer) 1) originally weak to fire and steel, now resistant to them 2) at first rock and fire hit it supereffectivly, now it hits them supereffectivly. 3) even though it's now weak to grass, it's originally an ice type so it has great coverage. 4) slush rush will make it a threat, and I don't think it will be hit by hail (despite being a water type) just like how dracovish and dracozolt aren't hurt by sandstorm. 5) unconfirmed: it will almost definitely get earthquake/high horsepower for electric types I hope this is its stat spread (and I think it makes sense) Hp: 90 Attack: 120 Defense: 100 Special attack: 40 Special defense: 65 Speed: 75 (although it's heavy, I think it's still possible. If it has strong legs it should be fast. And it's extreme height is probably measured tail to head like furret) Bst: 490

I agree a lot! Despite absolutely loving Regieleki, Xerneas, and Smeargle, one thing that made me stop playing ranked battles is seeing the same Pokémon over and over again, and losing to Pokémon like Indeedee, Incineroar, Togekiss, Excadrill, and many more. I’d rather things be more balanced on the battlefield so I can use Pokémon I like. Losing to Pokémon I hate and using Pokémon I hate just takes all the fun out of it for me. If it were truest balanced, I could leave the Pokémon I mentioned in the trash where they belong and actually enjoy playing.

Bring breloom back. Breloom is such a cool competitive Pokemon and is cool. Would love that menace to come back :).

Considering how generations usually go, the legendaries at least won't be in at the beginning but will likely be there by the end whenever we get the "catch all legendaries" mechanic for the gen. Rillaboom I expect to also return but the hope is more that it loses Grassy Glide since it's otherwise fine without it. As for Pokemon to cut, I love Amoongus and like Togekiss but wouldn't mind having a generation without them on the vgc side of things.

I just wish they would actually add base stats to weaker mons and buff harder than they do know becasue even if ever problem mon gets cut the new box legends are gonna be powrrcrept and there is always going to an alex predator in a game like pokemon so I really wish gamefreak balanced weaker mons up more.

I would honestly like to see them put in the legendary clause for VGC that you can bring 2 in the team, BUT only 1 for the battle. So you couldn't just slap out Kyogre and Zacian and call it a day. I would also like to see Trick, switcheroo and knock off work on Zacian, reverting it to its weaker form with its sword removed, offering more counterplay to it. Leaves me thinking after typing that tho, that most of these pokemon could be checked if more counterplay options that would be commonly used were put in place. More abilities having stat reduction immunities too. Soundproof ignoring intimidate, and Justified reversing it, aswell as reversing any sound based reductions, because Justice would never fall against such trifle words.

Wolfey are you able to do a video on why legendaries are OK in competitive? I just think they cause a lot of problems in the game and don't really solve any problems at first glance.

I feel like you don't need to ban Regieleki, just put it on the restricted list, make it take up a restricted slot and then that makes team construction more interesting.

Can agree with a Lot of Pokemon on this list, Lots of them made me miserable Last night in ranked, and love that you mentioned the venusaur... Opponent Hit me with sleep Powder Turn 1, my frosslass was sleeping for 3 Turns straight, the man landed a flare Blitz crit with His incineror, Hit 2 Hydro Pumps and also landed a Double Hit Blizzard while No hail was Up with His lapras.. and i still won that Game by some miracle. As for the Mons i want gone, besides those on your list, imo anything above 600 bst is somewhat unhealthily strong unless it Has a drawback ability Like truant (Skip every Other Turn).

Honestly, the ideal dex to me is 300, about the amount of PLA. But add spicy new Moves and Move sets for returning mons, and boost the stats of underwhelming returning mons by 20-40 BST And also remix Abilities in some new ways, like what if Limber also prevented Speed loss or trapping? Or if Keen Eye allowed increased critical hit rate to Moves that don't Miss? It's a tiny niche thing, but cute and nice. Or what if the Abilities like Blaze, Torrent, and Overgrow gave Crits to those Moves if in low HP instead? Effectively same ×1.5 Damage, and can't get boosted further from crits, but can break through some disadvantages to give it that epic comeback feel and prevent those Abilities from being ignored so much. I know 300 is not an ideal dex for everyone though. I just hope the returning pokemon feel like they get a little love through forms, representation, Signature Moves, or other fun little twists

My smeargle I used are a gambler, running Pay Day, Happy Hour, Trump Card, and Metronome holding an amulet coin for double the money, a Sun worshiper running Sunsteel Strike, Sunny Day, Solar Beam, and Morning Sun, and a Moon Worshiper running Lunar Dance, Moonlight, Moongeist Beam, and Cosmic Power, ran them as themed heroes each specializing in a specific Gimmick, a big pain in the but to do in Gen 7, as I needed to teach a wild smeargle the move I wanted and then teach that same move to my smeargle, but it was fun, and broken using Assist Smeargle

I'm surprised the Tapus aren't on the list. I love their designs, but they are centralizing as heck, we only forgot about them for gen8 because Regieleki is better Koko and both Lele and Fini don't matchup well into Zacian, Rillaboom and Eleki. Bulu was never a problem and was actually very cool, but it's outclassed by Rillaboom and it would be weird to remove the former 3 and let Bulu alone

Y’know, I feel like Gen 8 is the pinnacle of “Gamefreak, Why?” There’s Zacian, Regieleki, Calyrex, Mr. Fish, and those four (mostly Zacian) are so absurdly strong, it’s not even funny.

If Regieleki lost access to electro web wouldn’t that be a significant nerf to it?

I would cut both Groudon and Kyogre, not because they're unbalanced, but because they're super powerfull enablers. Let's be honest, rain teams would not be that annoying if their rain setter was just Pelliper intead of a water spout spamming monster that you can't switch into. And hurting sun would also hurt Venusaur. On another note, I really think all gen 8 legends will not be in SV, because I think they were only made as offensively strong as they are because dynamax exists. Without dynamax I don't know how Shadow Rider would have made the cut.

I think it would be healthy to have some of these pokemon just... not show up for Scarlet/Violet. This isn't to say that current meta battles are completely uninteresting because of them: There are still cool battles and such. However, I tend to find myself rooting for the teams with more interesting comps than the standard meta pokemon you see on EVERY team these days. I did really like earlier Sword/Shield competitive because of the more limited dex/limited options to bring into competitive battles: Sure, there were still "The good pokemon", but you would have a much larger variety of teams because there were a much larger number of "valid" pokemon to bring to a matchup that weren't just invalidated by other picks.
