***********ROCKY CREEK HOMESTEAD****************
After battling Psoriasis for years, I discovered the power of quality food and its positive impact on my skin condition. This sparked my desire to raise my own quality food. So come along with our Family as we transition from urban living to small self sustaining family farm. Learn from both our successes and failures in hopes it may inspire others to try new things. We entered into this journey with no prior experience and hope to provide many laughs and learning experiences. We learned most of how to do what were doing from watching others and hope to be able to provide a similar learning opportunity to anyone else who may benefit from this. Thank you for coming along with us on this journey and we hope it is enjoyable for you and your family.

Also those cups do work well for about a year but after that they usually need to be replaced. Those valves aren't meant to last long.

Great video. I saw on Amazon that someone's chicken had knocked the cup off and the water drained out. They were able to fix it and make it stronger with a cotter pin.

I use the Rent a Coop auto fill bowls during summer and then switch to the Rent A Coop horizontal nipples in the winter with a bucket heater inside the container. I plug the heater into a thermo cube so it only heats when temperatures reach 35 degrees. The Rent-A-Coop horizontal nipples do not freeze if you use the bucket heater.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead Год назад
Thanks for the tip. I’ve used nipple before discovering the cups but they were the verticals style and of another brand. Hearing that definitely is worth considering a transition during winter months. I have a thermo cube so that’s very possible. Thanks for the feedbacks

@pershop4950
@pershop4950 2 года назад
in the future, you can pick the height you want to install those cups to. So you can rest the container on the ground, and still have the cup up higher. However, the limitation of that, of course, is that it means there is a certain amount of water in the container, that will not drip down into the cups. Overall though, I see this new evolution in chicken watering cups and like the premise.

Hi, keep up the good work. I have used these for a few years and you may find that without the wing nuts they may get loose over time. Just cut off the flange on the inside of your container then put the wing nuts on, you could add a washer as well just to make sure that you have no leaks. Keith, Thailand

Do you think these will work for Polish chickens in the winter keeping them from getting icicles on their head feathers?…which is a common winter problem for Polish hens..
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead 2 года назад
At one point we were up to 4 polish chickens and I never had an issue with that. I still have 1 polish hen that’s been with us for 3 years now and she’s not had any issues. I only ever notice their beaks and wattles touching the water, not really any head feathers.
@deniceeverhart7473
@deniceeverhart7473 Год назад
Switch them to the Rent A Coop Horizontal nipples in the winter and your Polish will be fine. Add a bucket heater plugged into a thermo cube which automatically provide power to the heater when temperatures reach 35 degrees. That way the horizontal nipples won't freeze. My Polish do great with the nipples in the winter. I actually keep one nipple and one cup in the summer so they are always used to the nipples prior to winter.

First time chicken owner here. Ours are 16 weeks old and I have had those rent a cups for a while now. I do like them a lot. However, my question is what is the best way to keep the cups clean of dirt? Our cups get dirt in them, not a lot of dirt just usually some that floats down to the bottom. Sometimes one or a couple of them will get a lot of dirt. Is it even bad that it gets some dirt in the water of the cups? Should I leave it alone until next time I fill the bucket up? I use a 5 gallon bucket and I have a pvc pipe waterer, both have the cups. Lately I’ve been emptying out the water every couple of days just to get the dirt out, which defeats the purpose of having an automatic watering system like this.
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead 2 года назад
I’ve noticed the same thing with mine. What I’ve done is every other day or so, I take an only milk jug that has water in it and just pour it into the cups which flushes them. Takes only a minute or so and it pushes out most of the dirt that’s settled.

@@RockyCreekHomestead I have a question off topic. I have 16 week old chickens and I switched them to layer pellets. Now I’m hearing that you can damage their kidneys if you start them on layer feed too early. Is that a real thing? And should I switch them back to chick feed for two weeks?

I personally have raised many chicks on layer crumble without any issue. I think your chickens will be just fine and wouldn’t worry about it.

Have you ever had one that won't fill up with water? I just installed one each on a 5 gallon bucket, and one cup waterer did not fill up with water. Clues to fix it? Mine are new, but from a flea market so I don't know the manufacturer. They look exactly like yours. Thanks! UPDATE: I was able to get mine working after carefully taking it apart. There were dead insects stuck in the valve of all things. All is well now. Thank you
@RockyCreekHomestead
@RockyCreekHomestead 2 года назад
Never when new. Over time I’ve had a couple times when it stopped flowing. Debris built up and I just unscrewed it out, sprayed with a hose and scrubbed with a small brush and reinserted it and it began working again. I’m sure some things could malfunction or break though. Sorry if this isn’t much help, but in 2 years that’s all I’ve done and it’s worked.
