Bugatti is no stranger to high price tags. Especially with their 268mph Veyron Super Sport. When Bugatti was developing this record breaking car they did not cut costs so it could stay at 200+mph thus bringing about a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Pax tires to hold a $42,000 price tag. Jeremiah breaks down how Bugatti has made a tire cost so much money and how these tires are specifically designed for the Veyron Super Sport.

Not practical whatsoever in my opinion for Civilian Use, I mean if you needed to get from point A to point B on a perfectly asphalted landscape it is but really? Do you need the power of 1,000 horses? Does anyone even need 300 horses? or 200? I am imagining scenarios in my head from centuries ago, a Horse carriage just thundering away with 200 horses in front of it.

Nah. The real reason isn't even mentioned here. What is it? Economy of scale. In order to make these, the manufacturer must maintain a special production line with special equipment and specially trained personal all to produce a very low volume item. The initial cost of engineering an object, engineering the facility and equipment to make an object and building the facility and equipment to make the object is shared across the number of objects to be produced. So your break even point is (upfront investment + overhead) / units produced. From there, it's easy to see why a common tire that is produced in a volume of about a hundred million units per year is much cheaper than a tire that is produced in a volume of around 3000 units per year.

Dad had some 17-18yr old 33x12.50 Khumos for awhile they had some minor dry rot but they worked well. Replaced a little before the tread wore out to “be safe” though.

The glue on the wheels is there also to keep the wheel from spinning inside of the tire because it has so much torque and horsy powers!! F1 McLaren back in the day it was somthing crazy like 40-50 grand to change the tires also, but part of the cost was after they installed the tires they went out on a track to setup and readjust all of the F1 cool stuff like suspension and psi, lol. I dont remember for sure if they had a track to do this on or if they rented one but either way they had to have an ambulance on standby at the track with a crew as they were doing the driving to make the F1 perform like an F1!! It was mainly due to insurance reasons to have the ambulance and i think a fire truck also now that i think about it? There is a few videos covering it if you look for them. Not anything to do with the Bugatti but i thought it was cool and wanted to share is all!! Have a great day!!! :)

The pax system is common on Older Honda odyssey’s and is most often replaced with new wheels and tires to prevent such high cost

About 3 years ago I work at a Honda dealership as an alignment tech (later moved up to a PDI tech before moving onto another job). I remember anytime a main tech would bring over a 2010ish looking Odyssey, I knew they did the PAX wheels and I knew I was in for fun time. The sensors used for alignments usually just connect right at the edge of the wheel where the wheel met tire. Not on a PAX tire. The sidewall stuck out so there was no space to stick the sensors. So we had to get these huge clamps and clamp down in the tire tread and then connect the sensors to those, and the thread connector usually wasn't as firm as the wheel connector, mostly because if you went too tight you'd puncture the tire. The rest was smooth sailing. I remember those tires costing like $350 a piece too.

In a way, yes, but it really isn't that simple. They're that expensive because of how much money Michelin spent on R&D, and making manufacturing changes to produce them. And when you spend a lot of money upfront to develop a product only 20 people will buy each year, you have to charge more to make the investment worth it. It's such a high markup because of both the huge upfront cost and the fact that these babies will only go on a car almost no one has. Think of it this way, you live on a small island with about 40 other people, and a restaurant association asks you to start selling McDonald's food. First you have to spend time and money researching everything, then spend money building a restaurant, and pay employees. In the end, you invested $2 million in your restaurant. How long would it take for you to earn that $2 million back selling 2 for $3 McDoubles to 40 people who only eat there once every 18 months (don't ask why the people are required to eat there at least once every 18 months because I haven't worked out that part of this analogy)? Probably not in your lifetime. So, that 2 for $3 McDouble deal becomes 2 for $100, because you have bills to pay.

@@the_hodgepodgeEven at $42,000 per set, I think that Michellin is still losing money on these tires. I never saw a Bugatti with more than 10,000 miles on it for sale. In fact the highest mileage Bugatti that is owned by a customer has only 27,000 miles. Bugatti's own test car only has 47,000 miles. I doubt that most Bugatti's had ever swapped its tires. However, even while losing money on these tires, you need to factor in the trickle down effect, of Michellin's R&D. The R&D done on these 300mph+ tires will probably allow it to make better tires in the future for mass market supercars. It's also a marketing tactic, Michellin gets the prestige of making tire capable of 300mph, and costs $10,000 per tire. It's literally free marketing for the brand when people report on their insane tire price.

I'd bargain a ton of the cost is from R&D. Think about it this way: there's 2 main categories to determining the manufacturing cost of an item: investments and materials. Material cost is probably a bit higher than other tires, since there are extra parts, but probably not that significant enough to make up multiple thousands of dollars per tire. For investments, im lumping ak the costs prior to production. Things like R&D, manufacturing equipment, and marketing. All these costs are normally divided amongst all the units the manufacturer expects to sell. With a normal street tire that can be put on almost any car, this cost is divided over millions of tires. With these tires however, they only go one the veyron, so all those expenses have to be divided among a much smaller production run. Add onto all that the manufacturers markup and the dealers markup and you have a hefty pricetag

And Veyrons were made back in 2006 so at that time it's a ridiculous amount money to spend on tires. But if you about it because it Bugatti they mark up on price for these tires.

I did this in my mustang as well in the rain was at a stop had to get onto a big road accelerated too apparently because my back end ended up in the left lane luckily the extensive test of my tires that had caused this taught me how to safely handle it but no one drove any where near my car after that

Not really the reason they expensive. Most high end tires can handle that for a some times. In fact indy cars average around 240 mph.on race tires. Is the fact that they weight nearly two tons and are in a bugatti

It is not a mark up because these tires are bugatti specific so you need to consider the development cost for these tires unless there are millions of bugatti on the road then you can say it's a mark up.

42K in 2005. Tire technology is way beyond what it was 15 years ago. Koenigsegg and Michelin tested Pilot Sport 2 at up to 530 kph adequately.

As the velocity goes up, since it’s squared in the force equation, once speeds get really high it becomes much harder and harder to make a tire to cope with the forces. Still 42k for a set of tires is gonna be a markup since there’s no way that the materials cost that much.

It's more the time they spent developing it and making specific moulds and compounds that require their own machines in order to cater to very few people. There's a lot more than raw material costs, especially with something like this

I worked at a Nissan dealer and we recommended replacing wheels and tires to customers when they wore out.. why they thought putting them on a mini-van was a good idea was always a head scratcher to me. Yeah they might be safer but the cost wasn't worth it!

If I remember correctly, one of the other reasons for needing specific tires and a specially trained tech is the actual tire / wheel size. The wheels are 20.47" (f) and 21.26" (r), and the tires themselves are slightly smaller in diameter (no, not like ugly stretched "stance" tires are). This, coupled with the glue, also allows for the heat to expand the tire without debeading itself under the enormous pressure of top speed. Regardless, $42k for a set of tires is crazy. However, if you figure numbers a bit, putting $42k worth of tires on a Veyron is about the equivalent of putting a set of $400 tires on your run of the mill Honda Accord. ($2mil car, $42k tires... $20k car, $400 tires).

Oldest tires were on my 1996 bronco that my brother imported from japan, the tires were from 2002, and I changed them last year, the car was imported not a long time ago, I could only go upto 60mph without the car simulating an earthquake due to old tires, they still had good tread on them, but they were 18 years old.

The longest I ever went on a set of tires was 10 years as a daily. Goodyear wrangler silent armours. They still had lots of tread left just one would slowly leak.
