When Patroclus, Achilles' close childhood friend and wartime companion, was killed in battle by Hector, Achilles was devastated. During this time of grief his mother, Thetis, consoles him and asks that he wait for her return while she retrieves a set of armor forged by Hephaestus. While Thetis is gone, Hera insists that Achilles rejoin the battle against the Trojans, but he refuses as the promise to his mother is more sacred than the beckoning of the Gods. This piece is meant to portray the powerful bond between mother and son, and how Thetis prepared Achilles for his victory against Hector.
