The Aqara FP2 changes EVERYTHING!
This video is sponsored by Aqara, all opinions are my own
The Aqara FP2 is a Smart Home gadget like you've never seen, it is a Wifi presence sensor that works with Alexa, and Works with Apple Homekit, it uses MMwave technology to act as a radar to establish if there is a human presence in individual zones and can carry out Smart Home routines using Alexa, Apple Homekit, or the Aqara ecosystem. There is no hub required, buy it below if there's stock!

Another great episode, sir!! I managed to get one a couple of months ago and have it in our kitchen to trigger the separate lights in there at either end. Couple of things though: Firstly is the firmware upgrade to 1.1.7_0002 was the biggest mistake I’ve made 😂 I constantly have ghosts everywhere, and have to constantly reset the absence status. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 that Aqara will bring out the next upgrade soon as this one has been out about a month or so now. Secondly, I wasn’t been able to get the light sensor to show in Alexa when I set it up, to be able to trigger the lights only coming on when the lux levels are low and had to resort to just setting them to come on between certain times of day. We’re your routines created in Alexa or HA for the lux levels? Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Hi Paul, sounds like a tremendous addition to any smart home! Although it is implicit in this being a presence sensor, I do think you should point another advantage: being a presence sensor rather than a movement sensor it will remain triggered also when I am reading a book, or watching TV! This was the reason I cannot use motion sensors in areas wehre I do not sit still for a while, this thing would also work properly in my living room and bedroom! But is for switching the heating with such sensors: I suppose you can - provided you do not mind getting back to a room and discover it being bloody cold. Light triggers immediately, heating does not. If the kettle is switched off, it would be hours before your room is heated properly again.

Yeah, lots of external possibilities to explore. Perhaps the aqara sensor could be housed in a plastic watertight housing? I'm guessing that plastic in front of it wouldn't affect the sensor as it is microwave? Dispensing with infrared pir's would be genius and most welcomed as presumably there would be considerably less if not no false alarms. I wonder what effect wind or rain would have? Maybe a good project for Mr Hibbert ?

Outdoor cameras are pretty good for zone detections and recognising people and animals. Perhaps they could use with extra features, but biggest caveat is the price.

FP2 early adopter here with a word of caution. Aqara can be absolute derps with firmware! They all but bricked some people's FP2s in May and it took them until THIS WEEK to release a fix. My sensor was unable to show anyone in live view and thus, was a glorified paperweight for over a month. That wasn't very cool.

As have you and everyone else I pay attention to, I have been quite intrigued by the FP2. I've got just the use case you mentioned (two people, separate desks) and I'm looking forward to getting that automation working. "Works locally and without a need for a bridge": Well done, Aqara. Well done indeed. All you folks that require a bridge, pay attention. Directly advertising the zone presences and light sensor: This is the kind of thing that makes those of us who actually program Home Automation sigh in relief because, as you say, it's almost unprecedented. I can hope it's the start of a trend. Mains powered: Agreed. I dislike changing batteries. As much as I dislike cords hanging off things, I like changing batteries less. Doesn't work with Matter: Odd. I can't think of why one would bring out a device these days without Matter integration. Not a problem for me (being one of those Home Assistant, using HomeKit without any iThings) but I can see this could be an issue. 80 quid ($82.99): Yes, it's a bit steep except that the zone functionality can do the work of many individual devices. It would pose a limit on such things as "just getting one for fall sensing and another for zone sensing." Great review as always with all kinds of data I can use. Thanks.

I have 6 of the FP2s and they all have issues with ghosting, where multiple people show up when only one is in the room. Also many times when no one is present. I've done all the smart calibration stuff, no dice. No fans or weird equipment to trip them up in most scenarios. They're not quite ready for mainstream.

One small annoyance is the missing ability to rotate the map in Aqara's app so the device can be installed in a corner, say between living and dining room areas that meet up at the corner of the house. Apparently there was mention of this feature coming on their website a while back, but it was removed.

Thanks for another awesome video. I got this before launch and it was a huge disappointment at first as I had issues with ghosting and my lanky grey cat would trigger it all the time. Including tuning the tv on at 5am. Or as I would be cooking my kitchen lights would switch off as it thinks I’m not here but I am! I then paired my HomeKit routines /automations with a bunch of homebridge virtual switch so I had a bit more fine control. Ie if cooking switch on on and no presence detected, after I had entered the zone to do nothing

On an unrelated subject, many are also shifting to Rumble since YT has been messing with their presentations. I like these presence sensors but are they only a series circuit or can they work in parallel with traditional controls? Do they need to be removed and the device plugged in directly in case the sensor fails in other words for those who don't understand?

Unfortunately I've had a lot of trouble with mine. Multiple ghosts. I have found that mostly its leaving a zone that sometimes it will leave ghosts and not only going out of the sensor view and when I had a guest it was just got ridiculous. I have had to reset the absence status at least once per day. I have another but with how much one gives me trouble I don't even want to set the other up
@paulhibbert
@paulhibbert Год назад
Try adjusting the sensitivity in the settings and make sure it's firmware is up to date, and most importantly, once you've adjusted the settings reset the absence status. I had a ghost or two, but doing those three things got rid of the ghosts entirely. I had to try different sensitivity to get it to work, and I think I landed on the lowest setting in the end, but it works perfectly now!

The FP2 is an amazing upgrade over the the first FP1 version. Aqara have just made leaps and bounds in millimetre wave technology. I can't help but wonder what they might come up with next. The mains powered is good and bad. Sometimes it can be hard to put the sensor where you need to and hide the power cord going to it, but I can't think of any other device that does what the FP2 does. What is the delay between entering a zone and it triggering? Sorry if I missed it in the video.

That looks cool. Does it only work in one room or can it see through walls (or indeed floors)? The floor plan of my 3-bed house is probably smaller than that guy’s lounge, but it’s not open plan. Of course it would be nice to cover both upstairs and downstairs with as few sensors as possible, too! P.S. I’ve already seen the comments saying that the current FW has problems. I guess this is an older video .. not so NOT greedy .. aqara now is adding features that are temporary, showing they are working towards a subscription so I guess the high price isn't enough. It worries me that they may decide to make the zone presence behind a paywall. The issue with ghosts is not with detection its with after detection. My kitchen has one of these sensors and I constantly have to go into the app and "ai train" it for the room to get the overhead light to shut off. It works well to turn the light on but it doesn't turn off because it seems to "keep" a presence in the room. I may have to try to reset the kitchen sensor because this is about 90% of the time and I actually decided to make a switch to turn off the automation. The presence sensor is not 100% on detecting presence if you aren't moving as it is advertised. I cant use it for my nightly routine because it will trigger the morning routine several times during the night because the bedroom sensor thinks I left the "bed" zone. I think the longest time it kept me "in bed" was 3 hours then there would be a clear for some amount of minutes and then the presence is detected again. Aqara says they are working on position sensing to identify if a person is lying down, sitting or standing but that will probably be a monthly pay to have that since they did add sleep monitoring (which I'm assuming works like crap due to the fact it cant even accurately tell that a person is still in an area) and that is listed as "limited free". I have 4 of these sensors because I thought they were going to be great but am now worried because it seems like they are too busy trying to make subscription based service and not fixing the bugs in the already overpriced product

Sadly I'm sending mine back to Amazon... I'd love to say this works well... But if I brush past my tall plants, all of a sudden another human presence is detected. Of course my misses thinks it's great that she knows Luna is sat fast asleep on her side of the sofa all day but I can't setup any routines involving the sofa or the cats going to trigger them. Not only for what it does now, but for what it means for where smart homes are heading in the near future. I hope Aqara pairs this tech with a smart light bulb. On the one hand this being powered through USB is great, as there's nothing more annoying than having something like this that you're probably going to want to position somewhere a bit hard to reach to cover the space properly running out of battery every 5 minutes and needing to be changed. On the other hand, if you want to put it in a room you've not long decorated, having the option to battery power it would be great so you don't have to either have to pay to get a plug installed somewhere to plug a USB power into to run this thing, or end up with cables running up the walls... Also, this does presence and light but not temperature?

I bought the Aqara cube thing to turn stuff on and off and such by turning the cube up/down/left/right but I could never get it to pair with my wi-fi because it needed ONLY 2.4 but was confused by my wi-fi 5g channel, is this product going to have the same problem?

Do you have the same SSID for both 2.4 and 5GHz networks? Lots of devices get confused if they're the same. Mine are named separately with _2.4G and _5G. Also, if you're using your phone to set up devices like this, you'll want to be connected to the 2.4GHz network during setup.

At this point in time, you should stay away from these, as they've been semi bricked by a shit firmware update. Currently, every single Reddit thread on the FP2, is about them being more or less nonfunctional.

With such a low power consumption it’s odd that they didn’t add a rechargeable battery inside like some pir motion sensors do, they last a while before needing to charge

Not selfless, wallet enhancing. The more it can work with, the more value it has and the more they'll sell. Something Cr-apple will never understand. In other news, cancer necrosis/thrombosis is fun... I have an interesting new little gadget set up. A bank of x large PSU fans can be found for "cryptomining machines". I have a bank of three that are jammed into a window (using the central latch as a support) so they act as an air pump controlled by a smart socket.. Makes a lot of difference. The fan speed is adjustable by controller too. PS will be testing the new zigbee fingerbot they've just bought out. Hopefully this one will last more than 11 months (all the insides on the previous one being plastic that's edam with delusions of grandeur) . It's going to be having hugs with my tuya astromech. 😂

Hi Guys, does anyone know if the FP2 can trigger routines based upon how many people are in a zone at any one time? For example, if more than two people sit at the dining table, can specific routines can be triggered? Romantic lights and music perhaps? Or more practically, setting the lighting just right for eating dinner with the family? I can see this having some amusing results lol!

I'm just starting to get into smart home tech. Just researching a specific problem, how to make sure when my dad gets up in the middle of the night, the bathroom light turns on. He is older, and has dementia. He also takes sleeping pills, so when he happens to get up, sometimes multiple times a night, to go to the bathroom, I've wanted to light his way. He sometimes forgets to turn on the light....and that causes some issues at times. I got that done in the hallway with a cheap motion activated light I bought at the grocery store....but, well, he moves so slow...the motion sensor doesn't trigger a lot of the time. Not joking. It's like he's Robert Redford in Sneakers trying to get the cryptographic box. Except, he's just that slow, especially at night. And I've found that he can actually defeat the cheap motion sensor. The fall detection...is actually a very useful feature for me. Wondering how well it would work for my purposes. Local only is great...but even I, the guy who is just starting to get smart home going, has a power switch for his modem to turn off the internet...guess that's not as amusing as disconnecting your cable :P Definitely considering this for my problem....and this opens up many other possibilities for things to do in the future. Forced to start slow as we have limited funds. So I'm thinking of small projects to solve specific problems. My dad just forgetting to turn on the light is prime for the helpfulness of the fp2. Detecting sleeping vs standing is also a potential for him, as he frequently, again in the middle of the night, gets up and doesn't bother to turn on the light to see where he's going.

I think this will be great however, there’s a few options you can use to try and do the automation you are talking about. Bellman do some pressure sensors for mattresses that you can use to trigger automations based on wether he has gotten into bed or out of it. A much simpler solution would be a motion sensor that is positioned low and will only pick up motion when he steps his foot out of the bed, then turn on the light until he gets back into the bed. There’s many ways you can pull this off.

The Akara FP2 Presence Sensor is a game-changer in smart home technology. This device has been lauded by many tech enthusiasts, including Stu from Stu's Reviews, Brian from Automate Your Life, and Reed from Smart Home Solver, but it's the unique features and capabilities of the Akara FP2 that truly make it stand out. The FP2 is not just a motion sensor; it's a radar. It can detect the presence of up to five separate people in up to 30 separate zones, meaning it can cater to individual preferences in a shared space. For instance, when you sit at your desk, your lights can come on, and when your partner sits at their desk, their lights can come on - all from one sensor. But the Akara FP2 goes beyond just detecting presence. It's a significant development in smart homes in a rather unexpected way. The device works with Amazon Alexa and Apple Homekit, and soon, it will fully work with Google Home too. It operates via Wi-Fi and entirely locally without cloud connectivity or a separately purchased Akara bridge. This means that even if your internet goes down, it will still work. What's more, the Akara FP2 is incredibly open. It stores every piece of information that you set up in the app directly to the device, not in the cloud. This means that your data is yours and yours alone. It's up to you what you do with that information. This kind of functionality is rarely seen in third-party devices, making this a truly selfless move on Akara's part. The sensor is mainly powered, consuming between one and two watts, which equates to about five pounds of electricity per year. The savings you can make by having a device that turns off when you leave the room can be exponential. Plus, the sensor's range is impressive, with a range of 26 feet working perfectly. The Akara FP2 also has three individual modes: it can just detect motion, detect separate zones, or detect if someone has fallen down. This is particularly useful for elderly relatives, as you don't need a camera to know if they've fallen over. At 82 pounds on Amazon, the Akara FP2 is not a cheap sensor, but there is nothing to compete with this level of accuracy. It's worth every penny because there are 30 presence sensors in one housing. Akara plans to take this even further by pairing multiple sensors together to make one single map. In conclusion, the Akara FP2 Presence Sensor is a revolutionary device set to transform the smart home industry. It's a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to enhance their home automation system.
