In this episode we share the sad news about all of our chickens. And we use some live traps to find out what killed them all. Then we move on to running hot wire around the pasture that the angus cattle were in. There’s a problem and Mary falls back to the only way she knows how.

Looks like raccoons guys. So very sorry for ya'll! With the fencing in the chicken yard, we double walled ours with the bottom of the wire L shaping to the ground on the inside and then an outer covering with L shaping on the ground with raw edge facing out about 4 inches inside and outside. It stopped the raccoons and squirrels from trying to get inside our chicken yard. I am sure they are other ways of doing it but we lost several chickens to raccoons and it really helped Good luck ya'll

Dry cat kibble is also good trap bait for raccoons and possums.

The biggest mistake you made with your chicken coop and run was putting it right next to a wooded area! If you look at most farms around with chickens you will see that those chicken houses and runs are out in the open where animals have to cross a large expanse of clear ground to get to them. Leave the live traps set around the outside of the chicken pen in the future, this will short circuit a lot of the activity from predators looking for a chicken dinner! On your electric fence project concerning 'bulls', etc, you may find that you need to run a corresponding ground wire a foot below the hot wire where the animal will for sure get a shock if it pushes on the wire at all. I am 76 years old, had livestock most of my life and lots of experience with electric fences. My favorite way to build electric fence is to use barbed wire for the hot wire, and a smooth wire for ground, the points of the barbs get through the hair a lot better and bring the full shock to the critter, really gets their attention!

Sorry to see this. My first thought was a Mustelid (mink or similar), mainly because your wire fence is wide gauge and could easily allow a mink to pass through. Might be worth changing that for a wire with smaller holes that mink can't get through. Mink are a real problem with chickens - they'll kill them all and not eat them, just drink their blood. If the chickens were mostly uneaten then that racoon may not have been responsible, because racoons will generally eat what they kill. Best of luck going forward.

Thank you for the advice I think we are going to have to add some chicken wire all around to keep the mink out

I think maybe a Weasel, they always go for the neck. Weasel was small enough to get in and then tried to pull them through the wire.

As long as the skunk is in a small enough cage that it can't lift it tail it will not spray. Carefully transport to an area away from your building and open the cage get back and leave it alone it will leave the cage. Handled a lot of skunks this way the only one we had spray was a baby skunk that could get it's tail up.

You used pig wire for the sides. That is way to big of a hole. Weasels can go right through it. That would be my guess at what killed the chickens. The way the chickens were partially dragged through the wire hints that the animal could go through the fence. So it's likely a weasel, mink, or even a smaller fisher cat that got in. On the other hand, it could be the raccoon as weasels tend to only kill one or two at a time. It was the raccoon that went for a complete slaughter with my sister's chickens. For it to be the raccoon though, you would have to have a noticeable entry point. If the door isn't secure enough, they can open and close them on their own. So maybe check that out. That is how the one who killed my sister's chickens got in. I am still leaning into a weasel though. The crime scene looks very similar to what happened to ours. It went for the necks and even decapitated one of them. One chicken was still in the run, the other had been pulled like yours to the wire, and we found the rest of it roughly ten feet away. The bodies were mostly intact otherwise. Raccoons are not so neat. What kept them out: We dug a deep trench around the run and nailed the fence to large timber frames and logs. We did this because even black bears would push through the fence otherwise. We reburied it, but made sure to pile a bunch of loose rocks of various sizes on top. This meant that even if the weasel tried to dig it's way in, the rocks would collapse into any hole it dug. In worst care scenario, you can bury wire underground to cover the bottom of the run as well. Check for any openings a weasel can enter, even the vent holes in the roof overhangs of the coop (if you have any). We have had predators sneak in through there as well. Of course the main thing you need to do is get some wire that has much smaller openings. You want something even a chipmunk can't get through.

looks like a weasel or mink's killing. My father years ago had a weasel kill the majority of his chickens like that. He had to used chicken wire buried underneath his fence to keep them out

Why were they not safe inside the chicken house at night? Nothing should be able to get in the chicken house at night while the chickens are locked up.

You can’t catch enough animals to get rid of all of them. You have your chickens right next to the woods worst place you could have them you need them just like the other person said out in the open at night right need to have a pen by your house or out in the open closerplace you can see
