My husband and I are a cat owners. The only time our cats are aloud outside is if they're on their leash harness (and We are holding onto the leash). when we encounter people who just let their cats outside unsupervised we tell them exactly the points you made and they usually say "Its my cat, I'll let it outside unsupervised if I want to. Who cares about birds" We have also been complaining about people dropping their unwanted cats off out in the boonies and at farms for years as well (Its a huge problem where we live). But the people who do that kind of thing are either convinced that cats do better outside or literally only want them when their kittens and toss them out when they're adults.

I like how all the cat lovers in here are 100% agreeing with what you said. I love cats and have worked with them for decades, but outdoor cats are a huge problem. TNR only works on smaller, more manageable colonies, and even then it takes about a decade to go down. Not to mention the resources needed to actively maintain it. Regulations DO need to be put on cats. I feel like they should be treated like dogs with having the mandatory licensing, leash laws, etc. Enforcing spay/neuter is also good but there needs to also be a system to make it more accessible, with easier to access low cost/no cost clinics. In my experience, most people WANT to fix their cats, but just can’t afford it. I’m also thinking about rescues that keep feral cats in a contained system, like Cat House on the Kings. Yeah, they’re outdoors, but at least they’re confined to a specific area and can’t roam. And they’re all fixed, of course. But again, this requires a lot of resources. There’s no easy solution in a society that’s connected so socially to cats. But to be fair, many places in America ARE killing ferals left and right, due to full shelters and lack of public awareness. Why go to the shelter when you can just pick a kitten up off the street? Anyway. That’s my own personal rant. Keep your cats indoors. Even if someone didn’t care about the ecosystem, they should at least care about their cat. Outdoor cats only live about 7 years on average. I’ve got the study to back it up lol

I am a hardcore cat lover, but I do agree with this for the most part. I don't believe there should be a ban for people owning indoor cats. I do however believe that having ur cats outdoors is a serious problem, not even just for other people and the ecosystem, but even for ur own household! My parents released all our cats outdoors when I was a kid and all but one got hit by a car. And the flea problem is also a serious issue, not to mention tapeworms, which can be easily gotten by consuming certain types of insects that cats are naturally drawn to. While less common in house cats, it can happen, and did happen to my cat once because my house was invaded by flies when the landlord refused to fix my window. -_- There's just so many problems, so many I didn't even list. Not even accounting for the injuries from fighting with each other and raccoons and getting into people's outdoor ponds and crap. Just a nightmare.

I can tell you that as much as I love my little furry monsters, they are indeed destructive! Cat proofing my house has been a major project, especially since one of them has developed an obsessive taste for books. I spend a lot of time playing with them in ways that satisfy their need to hunt and kill things.

Does spaying them stop the yowling, or at least lessen it? We're going to be spaying ours soon but I'd always figured if they're indoor, nbd, since they don't "spray," like males do. Mine do, however, claw everything and "mark," and it's disgusting! I only had neutered male cats growing up. These 3 little demons ruined a couch! We're going to try pheromone diffusers too. I live in South Florida and can confirm that the feral cats are out of control yet no one talks about it. A lot of people feed them but they still kill countless amounts of small birds and lizards that people like me love having around. The invasive curtly tailed lizards are awesome, I welcome them and I've seen and caught a baby Nile monitor in my yard a few weeks back. FWC came and got it, put a tracking device on it and released back in the wild to study its habits because they now believe that Nile Monitors may not be as harmful as everyone thinks because they are eating mostly rodents, especially invasive rats.

This video has some very good information and I agree with a lot of it. However, I strongly disagree with your position on cats being the most destructive species on the plant. You forgot the most destructive species is actually humans. I would seriously argue that humans have been the source of many animals going extinct, pumping out greenhouse gasses heating up the planet and in general leaving our garbage everywhere. I have yet to see a cat make a plastic bag or water bottle that ends up in the ocean, degrading to micro plastics and polluting the ocean. I'm sure people will think I'm a cat lady, I'm not. But they are the scape goat for a lot of environmental problems that are caused by people. If there were no more cats on this planet, I don't think the environment would bounce back. I also don't agree with cats being shot by arrows as something to be admired. Just saying!

I agree with this. Cats wouldn't even be doing what they do had humans not taken such a liking to them. Cats domesticated themselves, but humans should be responsible for not taking more care of them. The only cats who should be outside are working cats who are spayed/neutered and vaccinated, same as dogs. 2-3 spayed/neutered/vaccinated cats on a farm catching mice to protect a crop aren't the problem- the problem is Karen down the street who keeps feeding the neighborhood strays without getting them fixed. Humans are the worst, we won't even swap over to nuclear power because some people refuse to be educated on how clean it is or they profit so much from dirty energy that they don't care what happens to the planet. Urbanization is destroying more local ecosystems than cats ever could or ever will.

I hate the argument people make of "But cats belong outside, its cruel to keep them inside and keep them bored and cooped up." No, what's cruel is you not doing anything to entertain your cat and play with or enrich their mind. If you want a pet you have to put in the work, its the same with dogs. Feed them, play with them, exercise them. Cats are perfectly fine and happy indoors IF you properly keep them entertained and get their energy out. Plus catios are a thing. Or a harness and leash. You cant just let them out because you dont got the time or energy to deal with their energy and needs. You maybe need a pet plant then if you cant be bothered to deal with a pets needs. On top of that, if you truly loved your cat, you wouldnt send it out into the world for god knows what to happen. Illness, fights with other cats and animals, dogs, bad people, cars, weather.. the list goes on. You dont just send your five year old outside and say "Gee, I hope Billy comes back by dinner, alive."

As an avid cat owner (by avid I mean VOLUNTEERED to acquire and live with EIGHT cats, 9th if you count the one living at my husbands warehouse indoors & providing rodent control), THANK YOU. Cats are EXTREMELY invasive. They can live just about any where with the right coat type and huntable food (anything from fish, to reptiles/amphibians/non-toxic toads, snakes, rodents of all types, rabbits, and can even take down animals as large as domestic chickens), breed OFTEN (and even more in areas that don’t have cold winters), produce BIG litters (8+ each), start breeding VERY young (usually 6 months, but can be as early as 4 months), and will hunt for FUN. Granted, they have an extremely high juvenile mortality rate when not appropriately treated with vaccinations and protected from disease and parasites, but that is PRECISELY why they breed so often and produce such large litters. if you feed a colony, I can guarantee you that MOST are still hunting. They may not eat it, but they will absolutely still hunt and kill regularly whether they need to or not. They enjoy, it’s their drive. They are BORN killers, not just sustenance killers. I used to volunteer at a TNR colony, but after reading some rather large and expansive peer reviewed studies on their effects to ecosystems, to the number of native species they helped push into extinction, and their constant spread of preventable zoonotic disease (looking at you Rabies, but also toxoplasmosis that can hit a pregnant woman just gardnening outside which can threaten the life of the fetus or trigger a form of spinal meningitis and brain injection), I just could NOT do it anymore. I do not find it ethical. Unfortunately, unless EVERYONE gets on board with culling cats and being more responsible with their household pets (and not dumping them outside while they are still INTACT), there will always be another cat to move into that territory to prosper and effectively raise a litter, thus replacing all the culled cats. This is why people got on board with TNR, but that still doesn’t address the fact that even FED neutered cats are still prolific hunters. Our cats, unfortunately, are invasive just about everywhere they go. Theirs wild populations in most regions that are remotely hospitable to cats, and they’ve even pushed out wild cats. For instance, the Scottish Wildcat is at GREAT jeopardy, not only due to hybridization, but people catch them thinking they are just domesticated cats, when they just look SIMILAR and can produce hybrid offspring, leading to culled populations, removing them from their natural habitat and neutering them while thinking they are just a lost domestic cat. It’s really quite sad. That isnt the only place that is having small Felid species greatly stressed out by a feral population of domestic cats. I absolutely love me cats, but they do NOT belong in the outdoors. Our warehouse cat got out one weekend (a window slipped down), and she “blessed” us by bringing in a rabbit she killed, ripped the legs off, and ate from the bottom up to the ribcage. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it myself. They are very fast, SKILLFUL hunters, and they will attempt to take down anything they think they can reasonably get. I wouldn’t put it past them to attack a litter of foxes, prairie dogs, or even groundhogs and various small kinks and weasels.

It really is so sad that the answer to invasive animals is to kill them. It seems so unfair to the animal. It's not the cats' fault that it doesn't have a home and no one cared to get it spay/neutered so it wouldn't make more cats, it's not the burmese pythons' fault that a hurricane ripped apart the facility that they were taken to (which also isn't their fault) and they all ended up in the everglades to make more pythons, it's not the cuban tree frogs' fault that they slept on a plant that got transported to Florida where they also made more frogs. It's just sad all around. It's still the fault of humans, but the failure comes from the people who didn't regulate things properly in the first place. Responsible pet owners were never the problem. Except goldfish might be due to the people who own them (but the people releasing goldfish weren't responsible owners to start with). Same with plecos. But for all I know, the invasive fish issue could also be due to a hurricane (would not surprise me).

Its for sure a tough call, however with Australia and the cat issue, cats have already caused the extinction there of 15 different native and unique species to only Australia and if there is no solution right here and now, then the issue will only continue. Which includes catch and release, they will still kill things. No its not fair to the animals that somehow ended up invasive but its also not fair to the native wildlife. I always get sad seeing beautiful snakes killed here in the everglades, but I also want my native wildlife to survive.

I researched cats and TNR for one of my papers in college. The research I found shows that TNR is not effective and that besides being very destructive to the ecosystem as described, they have also surpassed dogs as the number 1 carrier/transmitter of rabies. Mostly because there are not laws requiring cats to be licensed and regulated the same way dogs are. Now, this paper was over 10 years ago so things may have changed, but it made an impression on me for sure.

Which country because I think it's still dogs globally (but it mostly applies to countries that don't have reliable access to the rabies vaccine for animals or people and have a feral dog problem). In the US, the biggest concern is bats because they can bite you without you noticing so some people go get the vaccine if they find a bat in their house just in case. Not every state even requires dogs to get vaccinated, some states have nearly no precautionary regulations for cats or dogs (like requiring vaccinations or spay/neutering) which is honestly shocking. You can't own a hedgehog in Califonia but could theoretically have an entire pack of ferral unvaccinated dogs in Ohio.

Maine was trying to enact a "leash" law on cats... basically, you'd have to register them just like you would with a dog, and I think they were pulling for microchipping, neutering and rabies shots (if not full vaccination). We are definitely required to vaccinate our cats and neuter/spay unless they are in a breeder's care, and buy a license from the county. Now: is it very well enforced? No. Or every cat I have ever had would not have started as stray or feral. But they have all been indoors once they joined the family. For their own safety as much as the wildlife's.

There are alligators in our sewers here in FL. Not the totally closed up sewers like you see in places like New York. We have many many many large open sewer tunnels mostly for rain water management. You could crouch down and walk through them. They connect water retention ponds, canals, and man made lakes. Every body of water in Florida has Gators. They even bravely take a dip in neighborhood pools. You are right about them not being "flushed pets". But every Floridian grows up knowing gators are everywhere here. I live on the Space Coast and when I go paddle boarding in the river, I have a 10 inch knife strapped to my leg in case the Gators or bull sharks try and get too friendly. It might be like poking a monster with a toothpick but it makes me feel better. Lolol

Keep in mind that in rural areas cats still serve a purpose as much needed mouse catchers. However an outdoor cat should be fixed and cared for appropriately. Our outdoor cat is invaluable to us averaging 10 rodents a day 9 months out of the year (at a certain point it gets to cold and the snow too deep to find many mice). He is a genuine working animal. But he is fixed, doesn't wander off property, gets yearly vet visits for shots ect. I've seen the feral cat and feral dog problem, its in rural areas too due to irrisponisble pet ownership. We still shouldn't blanket approach any issue.

Cats have to be on a leash or fully contained to be outside, but nobody enforces it or even knows it’s a thing! I know I'll just be dismissed as an ignorant cat person, and my knowledge as someone who has actually worked in cat rescue and sees where feral cats come from will be dismissed and insulted ... I know the routine and people's attitudes and even though it never stops making me feel like walking into an almost-frozen lake, I will try to respond respectfully and I do want to say a couple things: 1) Your comment that Australia is "getting it right" for putting arrows through cats is absurd. I'll skip past that it's cruel, since that seems to bring you and a lot of other people delight, but because if Australia was getting it right, there wouldn't BE any feral cats to kill to begin with. If they were getting it right, everyone would spay and neuter their cat, and keep them inside. Or even just spay and neuter their cats. Cats are a completely domestic animal that can easily and cheaply be sterilized before two cats turn into 1,000 cats. You criticize TNR but it's an effort at humane damage control that shouldn't even HAVE to happen. If the cats weren't there in the first place, it would be better for them and the native species. Which leads me to my next point 2) "cats are the most destructive animal on the planet" ... I hope you mean besides humans. Because every single feral cat on the planet, and every other "invasive species," is here because of humans, period, whether it was accidentally due to transport, a hurricane at a breeding facility, or a dumped pet, or a species brought in intentionally. Cats didn't fall out of the sky, or make a little armada and storm the beaches of Australia. They are there because people are irresponsible ... and those people never pay ... it's always the animals that pay, and the responsible people who pay, in the case of bans, which I agree are nonsense. The only thing positive I can say is, attitudes like this remind me to keep pushing through my problems, because I know what I do for cats is kind and good and I think the world needs me regardless of what others think. You can knock TNR all you want but there are far less community cats in my neighborhood because of the time and money I have spent TNRing despite my disabilities, and there are 12 kittens that went on to be loved indoor cats instead of being dead or out there reproducing endlessly and continuing the cycle. Believe me, I do not want cats to be part of nature, not just for nature's sake but for the cats' sake. Nature is cruel and we have the opportunity to protect domestic species from having to be part of it. However, I believe the people who caused them to be where they are should pay, not the cats. And for what it's worth, I never let my cat outside, except on his leash. But he started there, as a discarded kitten, before he found me. And I'm really glad someone didn't put an arrow through him like you'd have liked, because he was by far and away the best part of my life every day since the day I met him.

I completely agree with this! Great work with TNR! it does work, but takes a lot of dedication and commitment. If everyone who's posted about how much they hate outdoor/feral cats, feels this strongly about cats being destructive should do more than just complain about it but actually help with TNR and spay and neuter efforts. This is a solvable problem than can be solved humanly, not with disgusting arrows. It disgusted me to see a snake shot with a nail gun but I'm equally horrified that cats are shot with arrows. It's not funny and lacks human decency. I said in my previous post that I'm not a "cat lady" and that is true, I'm team dog! But I've helped multiple colonies with TNR efforts and stabilized three. Trapping and fixing more than 60 cats, pulling 25 kittens fixing them and adopting them to caring homes. This prevented 1,000's of "destructive cats" being born. Everyone on the anti-cat bandwagon, can actually help with TNR efforts by volunteering or donating money. That would actually be working to solve a problem not just complain about it. But of course, it's easier to complain than do something about it.

@@karathomson5182 Thank you so much for this reply, it really made me feel better and reminded me to focus on people like you and continue to strive to walk in your footsteps. After watching this video and reading the comments, I went to bed last night wishing I was a person who just didn't care ... which is an awful thing to think, but I'm so tired of feeling so much pain and anger at people's lack of decency. The irony is I watched this video because I've been sickened and heartbroken over what happened to those pythons, as well as the deer the FWC killed with unbelievable cruelty, and I want to be knowledgeable and speak up for those animals too, as well as the people who own or care for them. I agree the FWC and many other wildlife commissions do not actually have nature's best interest in mind. I was just so disappointed to hear Adam use it as a platform to advocate for violence and slaughter of cats, and ridicule of TNR, instead of simply pointing out the double standard between cats and other species as an example that FWC does not care about nature, which I actually agree with. I am sure in some follow-up video he will pat his own back for offending people by "saying what needed to be said," but my issue isn't that he pointed out what a problem outdoor/feral cats are ... they are, and cat advocates do actually point that out all the time, and are the first to push for cats being kept indoors. I'm upset because applauding the slaughter of cats and discouraging TNR is not only cruel but potentially misleading and counterproductive. You are absolutely right that TNR is hard, and requires a lot of people to help and follow-through. Of course it isn't going to work if everyone just says "that doesn't work" and complains that they aren't allowed to kill cats, and leaves it to a tiny few people who actually try to enact TNR, spread the word about spay/neuter for owned cats, and spread the word about the importance of responsibility for cat owners for the cats' and nature's sake. I am so thankful for people like you, and take inspiration from stories like yours. I hope others will also be inspired by efforts' like yours and mine (even though I am just getting started), instead of the laziness and violence chosen by others who have only done enough "research" to tell themselves their desire to see cats killed has anything to do with it being a "solution that works."

She'd been spayed as a 10 month old & I loved her to bits. Any cat I get to replace her will be the same: spayed/neutered & only allowed outside supervised or on a harness & leash. Alligators are NOT invasive in the US; you find them in most of our Southern states, in fact were you aware that Florida has its own native species of crocodile. There is a small population found in a small area around a power plant. Florida has the perfect climate for breeding reptiles, thus people wanting to start a business in breeding and selling reptiles flocked to Florida. Yes, a Zoo was damaged in a Hurricane releasing quite a few reptiles, BUT we already had a problem with Boas and Pythons and other invasive snakes in the Glades, it just added to the problem. We've had a few extremely cold winters, snow, below freezing weather, destroyed citrus groves all over the state. Do you know what it didn't destroy, Boas, Pythons, tagus and all the other invasive species. Turns out, animals ADAPT to changes in their environment, such as weather, go figure. No one has a problem with conscientious pet owners, it's the nutcases who aren't and just let them go when they can't or don't want them anymore. Florida welcomed quite a lot of Vietnamese refugees back in the day. Seems they were homesick for some snakehead fish dinner, so they smuggled some in and released them in the canals. Only ones who'll eat the damn things are the vietnamese. Now they are destroying our native fish and spreading. Now, this once diverse and beautiful state is seeing its native species wiped out and taken over by animals that shouldn't be here.

Love, love, LOVE! Thank you for hammering this home, especially on the cat topic! I’m always saying cats should not be allowed to be “barn cats” / outdoor cats.

Barn cats are fine, IF you have an actual farm and need for working animals. But people who just keep cats as companions have no reason to let them out.

Totally agree on the cat thing!! To be fair though it is also illegal in Saskatchewan to let cats outdoors without a leash (so a bit less hypocritical on their side) yet I volunteer with a bird rescue and the trauma cats put on local birds is so overlooked!

I love cats. I love all animals. Since watching all of you guys, you, Tyler, Chandler, Brian, etc i love all reptiles now too. Really did not like how the death of these cats cats regardless of the problem, was horrible. I dont like it with the Burmese Python in Florida either. So im pissed right now

I have a Cuban tree frog that someone found on a plant at a nursery here in California. Also, thank you for addressing the cat problem. I have a cat. She is an indoor only, as she, and all other cats, should be.

I used to work in a grocery store with a floral department in Seattle and would sometimes get brown anoles or some kind of gecko in the plants. Spiders and millipedes were very common. Never saw a snake 🐍

This is the first time I’ve seen a video like this and I think it’s a wonderful first step into getting the conversation started on a widespread level. The double standards we’ve been seeing for years with ACTUAL invasive animals vs animals that can practically do nothing to the environment besides feed the ecosystem when it dies is just very disappointing. I’ll agree Florida is out of control when it comes to reptiles and some of them are making their way upwards but the fact is that cats are and always will be a thousand generations ahead. I don’t like cats but I don’t want to see them killed either but unfortunately that’s the only way anything could ever be done at this point and even then I doubt it would do much good. It’ll take three times as long to hunt them all down as it did for them to become invasive in the first place. We’d be hunting cats for thousands of years before we made a dent in the population. I don’t want the whole world to experience what Florida is dealing with right now but honestly I think it’s inevitable. The invasive reptiles there aren’t even making that much of a difference in other populations whereas cats have made numerous species extinct and that number grows every year. Why not let every species run wild like we have with cats and dogs? They won’t do anything cats haven’t already done. Any common reptile will eat something that’s already being hunted by cats. They literally don’t even make a difference because cats are basically indestructible as a whole. It’s saddening and frustrating and I hope we will eventually wake up and do something about it.

What!? There is no ninja turtles!? Or are they just not playing with the alligators? 😰 I think a lot of the bans are done due to fear as well. So many people think reptiles are "dangerous". And yes, some of them can be, but most of them are not.

Dang! Thank you for this information. I never really thought about it, but it makes so much more sense than some pet owner with buyer's remorse releasing their boa into the wild. And yes, PETA sucks.

It's one of the things that annoy me. So I have Taiwanese beauties. Taeniru's. Out of ALL the beauty snakes from Asia, incluiding from neighbouring countries..... ONLY the Taiwanese one is no longer allowed here. I can't sell mine, not breed anymore, if I move I will have to notify the goverment as well so they can come control I am keeping them safely but 99% chance they will be taken away and killed off.... When I tried to look for an answer on why Taiwanese only were banned, nobody had an answer. Not even the minister of animal welfare gave me a proper answer besides the, there are released animals found over 10 individuals, thats why we speak of an invasion....

I’m not a reptile guy but am a tarantula guy … That’s like the tarantulas that you can’t sell across state lines in the US even if they are captive bred .. because it’s to “stop” the wild caught poaching of them … don’t make any sense to me if they are captive bred … here is the list of them … oh and I have 4 cats all fixed and none go outside but I agree with the cat thing … Poecilotheria fasciata Poecilotheria ornata Poecilotheria smithi Poecilotheria subfusca Poecilotheria vittata

I don't believe in any all out bans on pets, but I do think there should be regulations on who can keep them. At the very least, more needs to be done to make sure they are going to responsible owners. And that goes for cats and reptiles alike. Regardless of their environmental impact, people should still not be releasing unwanted pets into the wild. Especially if they were raised in captivity, this is cruel to them as they don't have a good chance of long term survival. And yes, people who want cats as pets need to keep them indoors. It's better for both the environment and the cats themselves, as again they live much longer on average when they're indoors only. Letting them out leaves them vulnerable to many more diseases/parasites, car traffic, predatory animals, and the whims of other humans who may want to do harm to the cat.

I am a reptile keeper and I also work in conservation. So I see both sides and I think we as keepers need to address the issue a bit more differentiated. Sure cats are a worse problem in most of the world (respect for addressing this) but this does not mean that invasive reptiles and amphibians are not an issue. It is true that many introductions were caused by the transport of goods but there are also too many examples where animals were introduced by keepers and not only because of storms (for example wild populations of red eared sliders in Europe). If we just pretend the pet trade and irresponsible keeper are not part of the problem and it is all a conspiracy then we leavr the field to people who just come up with stupid laws…

I live in BC we have some of the absolutely dumbest laws there ever were for reptiles/amphibians. My favourite is that you can own the bigger more cankerous monitor species with no checks or oversite whatsoever...species that are fully capable of taking fingers off should they not tamed down and handled properly and are difficultto do... but a tree frog thats hard enough to keep in captivity with everything kept adjusted specifically for their species ahhhhhh we cant have that here it might take over! In BC, 🍁...known for its florida like winters....oh, and theres a city here you cannow WC rattlers without permits but god forbid you have a falsie...yes you can own a snake with medically significant venom that can kill, but not one that has the same 'venomous' level as hoggies and with very clear body language that even the mot oblivious noob could pick up on.
