Always been a bit uncertain as to when to use braid/straight-through FC, as well as what brands to use, this cleared it up a lot! Can also stand by FG knots, they are amazing! Particularly with spinning and baitcast rods that have very small eyes on the runners where other knots will get caught up!

Thanks for the info mate. Still keen on using braid to FC and getting used to going smaller line size to increase the bite. Still find im a bit heavy handed so a 6, 2x 8, 10lb , then a 4lb when i get aventurous out of my comfort zone. Great informative vid as always Byron. I actually tried 4lb straight through FC on one of my smaller reels a few months back. I didn't mind it, though a very different feel to braid and FC leader and took some getting used to. Keen to rig up some more straight through on other reels so I’d be keen on 2 x 4lb and 1 x 6lb in the Sunline FC2, then maybe 1 x 4lb and 1 x 6lb in the Harris FB leader. Sweet - thank you!

Really informative Byron I've enjoyed my time with straight through fc I heard great things about the Daiwa Finesse in 4lb and I was able to put a serious amount of pressure on it Was really inspired to give it a crack thanks to Adam Costa, in saying that I've always found myself picking up a braid/leader combo for bream Casting distance for me is everything and find that the fish aren't too spooky with the line shadow in my system but also never really put in the time for analysis to really see how much is does affect my fishing If I won, I'd love 4lb,6lb,8lb in Daiwa Jthread fc as I've found it being the leader I predominantly grab to tie on.. love it!!

Hi Byron, you might be interested in the results of my leader material testing, which is not an exhaustive test, and was to determine if buying the advertised harder FC had any real benefits. Tested 6, 8, 10, 12lbs Berkley Vanish in casting FC, 6lbs Nitlon leader FC, 8lbs Yamatoyo Chinu Harris leader FC. The test I did was to determine abrasion resistance as opposed to being cut. Hard should last longer than less hard. My test showed that abrasion resistance is weighted towards hardness, or put another way 2 lines of equal diameter wear through at a different rates under the same load. Softer casting FC didn't last as long as harder leader FC if both were the same diameter. The 8lbs Chinu (0.235mm) lasted 24 passes while the 6lbs Berkley(0.230mm) lasted 16 passes. The 6lbs Nitlon (0.218mm) lasted 17 passes.

Great info again, agree with the over spooling of FC, started straight through last year and had issues with bird nests. Found the FC straight through really helped with top water helping keep the treble hooks in, even though they say use mono for top water. I would go with 6lb and 8lb of the leader and maybe a 4lb, just not sure if I could handle the fish well enough, and a couple of 6lb j-thread finesse fluoro.

I like tasline as my mainline braid the 12lb is thinners than most 10lb line. I then put on anything from 8lb to 12lb FC leader. I have never really had a favourite fc leader and have used a wide range from Sunline, Wilson, Ocea and blackmagic. I am very keen too find a leader that I like more than others so that I don't have to think about what brand to purchase each time. I am keen to try your fav one out whether I win or not. I wld also like to try straight thru fc but need to get another set up as I am happy with my gear as it is now. Always look forward to you releasing content and really like the way you banter. Hi Byron my main fishing outfit for Bream spinning in the Sydney basin is my Shimano T Curve Premium 7'2" 21TCP722SPL rod with a Shimano Vanford 1000 spin reel spooled with the Gosen W Hard type 8 casting braid at 10lb at an unbelievable 0.4PE!, as any thinner line I get air knots with wind.. My fluorocarbon leader is a little hard to get in Australia and its called Seaguar Gold label at 6lb with an amazing 0.185mm diameter (if I compare this to the Sunline FC Rock 6lb line which is thicker at 0.205mm and the FC Rocks 5lb is thicker 0.190mm!) Seaguar Gold label fluorocarbon leader is sold mainly in the US and is considered America's top of the line fluorocarbon leader. I need to be very finesse at Port Hacking due to the crystal clear clean water and it being a high pressure fished river within the large city of Sydney. The rod, reel outfit is light as a feather and casts at forever distances, the Gosen braid casts even better than my old line of 6lb 0.4PE Varivas Avani Light Game. I tried a Shimano Stella 1000 reel with this setup but it felt a little heavier and the balance was off than the Vanford so I went with the lighter Vanford reel. I like the tech side of the talk you do, thanks for the interesting information.

Great explanation Byron, my favorite straight through use to be nitlon Dfc in 4lb and 6lb but it virtually non existent nowadays. Sweet.. Had a look, a little hard to tell now packaging is gone and the sticker on the spool is a little worse for wear. I think I might be due for some new leader line.

Over the years I have used various FC leaders but haven't tried the Harris yet. I usually have 4 rods and reels rigged up. ( 2 with braid and leader for plastics and 2 with straight trough fluoro (daiwa 3/5lb atm) Mainly used FC rock as a leader but also some nitlon dfc. Mainly use 3/4/6 lb leaders

Thanks Byron, haven’t really thought about using straight through FC, though your share has me seriously considering it as lately I am targeting fish around man made structure more. I would like to try 8lb straight through FC and Harris leader 4,6,8 & 10Lb

I mainly fish in saltwater so I would love a couple of packs of 20 Ib mono and a couple of packs of 20 Ib braided line with a 10 Ib liter for throwing soft plastics. It would greatly be appreciated as of right now I'm having to purchase the cheap mono found in the bins your talking about. Love the videos brother ❤! Keep them coming.

Straight through FC is something that I haven't thought about for a while, after having some bad experience with bird nests in the past with straight through FC in the first few casts, I decided not to use it anymore. Seems like as you mentioned in the vid, it will need 1-2 outings to get used to and let the line take the shape of the spool, I might give it a go again. As for me, 4lb straight through and 4-10lb on the leaders would be good.

Funny that you put this video out as I've been trying to search for a good FC leader to use having dropped a couple of trevally on 6lb in the estuary over the last week (one right at my feet trying to land it). I'd definitely be keen to try out lighter leaders to see the strike rate increase while breaming. Unfortunately I only fish from the land atm so lighter leaders aren't as kind to me but I also want to try out straight through fc for a whiting setup. 4lb straight through and 4-10lb on the leaders sounds like the way to go I guess? Thanks for another great vid mate

Ive always liked berkley vanish. May not be the best on any one point but covers all bases well. Seems to be a good midway between supple and hard abrasion resistance. But i also rate the j thread. The brand i see get the most hot air blown up it is that FC rock stuff. Bloody rubbish! But i havent tried the one you recommend, so in the interest of experimentation and discovery id like to try it. So if i win, id like 3x 4lb and 2x 6lb please. Cheers, keep up the great vids. Really appreciate the openness, bluntness and honesty. Sponsorship and marketing make purchase choices very hard at times.

I'd love some 4lb spinning fluro, and a set of 4, 6, 8 and 10lb of the traditional leader fluro to try out! I'm DMing Hot tackle to get a price today!

Interesting stuff. Not sure I'm quite brave enough for 3lb and 4lb main line just yet, so I'll stick with the 6lb braid! I'd go for leader fc, with a couple each of 4lb and 6lb and an 8lb for chasing flatties.

had to smile mate wen u said the lightest fc u use is 3 to10 being the heaviest. my lightest is 20 up to 60. doesnt matter if u r using light medium heavy fc it all acts n reacts all the same. pleased u talked bout under spooling the spin reel with fc, thats important info n if u dont know this it can make a sesh frustrating. i under spool my spin reels by 5mm, remember i am using heavier fc. something that seems to help me wen i respool my spin n casting reels with fc i tie a heavy clip(not lure or hook)n spool it out while on idle at the start of the sesh. i will do this a couple of times over a couple of seshs. it just seems to help with the spring/coil tension in the fc wen casting n it performs pretty gud for fc after that. i am using 20 to 60 so 3 to 10 it might not work.

Straight thru 3lb fluoro has increased my numbers on the flats by heaps.... I've got 5lb of the daiwa stuff for my crabs/structure cranking. Great vid as always mate, if I win I'd love some 3lb and 5lb straight thru and the rest in 4lb yamatoyo chinu Harris leader 👌🏽 I've been using that leader for a few seasons now and definitely won't go back to the brittle fc rock in the light stuff 🤙🏽

I would love to have a crack at straight through but I just love fishing fluoro to braid via FG is hard to try anything else . I have been finding it is so hard to get quality leader at the moment because I feel the shops are struggling to get stock so end up just stocking what ever they can get .. rarely see 3pound in stock but 3,4,5,6,8 is where its at I reckon .. just my 2 bob as a hack lol .

Hi Byron, I am getting into the lighter style of estury fishing I am always having trouble snapping my Braid-FC at the knot when casting. The knot always gets caught up in the eylets and is usually snapped by the 5th cast. I have tried double blood and F knot. Note: It is not the knot that is failing, failure happens just after the knot in the fluro

No way! I just told my friends about the Daiwa J Thread finesse fc earlier on the same day! I’ve been using 4lb straight through Sunline Shooter Invisible for bream when kayaking around structures. Great high quality line. I have recently tried the Varivas Ajing Master Blue Moon fc straight through 2.5lb for catching small tailor, whiting but I did catch a 40cm flathead and 37cm trevally with this 2.5lb FC lucky me😄. I do agree that straight through fc not so ideal when fishing plastics as it’s harder to set the hook properly. In terms of choice of good fc leader, Sunline FC Rock probably is the ‘go to’ one when I don’t see the need of being too specific. Gosen JUDE has to be my no.1 choice of quality fc leader , anything from 4lb to 20lb . Tight lines!

I tried to put straight through fluro on my 2500 reel but it just felt like it would not hold the reel shape like braid does it hugs the reel. Whereas the fluro feels like its trying to escape off the reel haha.

Was really keen to hear your thoughts on FC leaders and this video absolutely delivered, will have to give straight through FC a try with my hardbodies. I've been using the chinu harris leader myself in 4lb and have found it to be work wonders, and I would be very happy with 5 x of Harris in 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 lbs. Also, have you found a difference in the amount of bites you gets with lighter lines? Cheers!

I've used fc before straight through and liked it but strayed back to Sunline super pe. I just like the feedback too much. It's for sure a bias for.me, I've caught many more fish on my braid combos so I am more comfortable with it. Usually fishing 6-8lb
