Kerry (blond) wrote most of their songs. Robby was a classically trained violinist. I can’t believe Kansas isn’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Excellent choice for a video. I met Phil Earhart (Kansas drummer) in 1983 at the Percussive Arts Society convention in Dallas. He gave a clinic and was very interactive with all of us in attendance. He mentioned that none of the members of the band read music. I thought that was incredible that they could make the music they did without actually being able to read. They all played by ear. Little fact for you lol.

I'm surprised the lyrics aren't the first thing you talk about. Lyrically one of the best songs of that decade. Classic tune. Classic instrumental.

I'm 67 and from Kansas. I used to see the band Kansas back in the early 70s when they were still just a cover band and played in small town bars.

The song that taught us to play air-violin. With a deep meaning and beautiful sound, it will be a song that will not turn to dust or fade away.

Dust in the Wind is my favorite song from Kansas and one of the few songs that we all heard a 1.000.000 times on the radio that I never get tied of. hearing.

From Topeka, Kansas. I'm 64 and my mother wants this played at her funeral. She loves this song and Kansas. She even went to a Kansas concert with me. in Topeka Kansas. 😇

The song is truely evergreen and immortal. You can listen to it a thousand times and never tire of it. One of the top songs EVER.

I listened to this song a lot after my dad passed away….when i heard it as a kid back in the 70s and 80s, it was different…it took on a new meaning after my dad passed.

I live in Missouri. It doesn't happen often but I was lucky enough driving home in a rural area to witness one of the most electric lightening storms I had ever witnessed. It was total cloud to cloud chain lightening. It was so gorgeous and it was horizon to horizon. it was like something you'd see in a sci-fi movie. It literally made the night into day it was so frequent, bright and spread so far it was like a once in a lifetime thing.

This song was playing at the roller skating rink when my first girlfriend kissed me. We were 10. Even at that age, our personalities meshed so well. We were together for 2 years when her family moved from Indiana to Kansas City, MO. We wrote to each other through our senior year. She told me she wished she had never moved because she wanted to see how we would do growing older thru high school. You never forget your first love. This song always evokes my memories of being with her.

This will forever be one of the most epic songs and will be timeless. My brother would quote this song and would tell people, love hard, live your life and find joy whenever possible He 100% did. Lost him 2-23-2020 unexpectedly. This song will always remind me of him.

I remember "Dream On" bought that one on 8-track back in high school in '73. I was supposed to see Kansas in 1977 while stationed at Camp Lejeune. Got the tickets and concert necessities, and away we went. On the way, we heard the show was canceled. Another band I missed out on.

I'm from Kansas, and we're "The Wheat State" not corn. Corn is grown here, but it's much bigger in Iowa. Anyone out there wanting to know more about the band Kansas should check out the documentary about them, "Kansas: Miracles Out of Nowhere." It talks about the creation of this song. The guitarist, who was also one of the two real song writers in the group, was practicing his finger picking at the table one day when his wife came by and said that was really good and he should do something with it. He told her it was just an exercise and to leave him be when she said something to the effect of "No, I'm serious, you should REALLY do something with that." He wrote the song that day and took it to the band, not really expecting them to like it because it was so different from what they normally did. Luckily the bad members were all floored, absolutely loved it, and it became the biggest song of their career. The documentary also has a very funny story on how they finally got a record deal. They convinced someone from one of the record companies to come see them play live. They realized they had to make it look like they were very popular, so they rented out an old opera house in tiny (and I mean tiny) town Kansas, and on every telephone pole for a couple of hundred miles they put up posters that in huge letters said, "FREE BEER," with smaller letters about it being a Kansas concert and admission was only $0.50. By the time the concert started, they said the line of cars outside of town ran for miles down the highway. The band said they played horribly that night but the crowd was so liquored up they were having a blast, and the record company figured anyone able to draw a crowd like that had to be worth signing.

10:50 yes, Robbie Steinhardt just played the violin, as well as singing. Kansas's "new" violinist, who has played with the band on and off since the early 90s, will also play guitar live. But Steinhardt only played the violin.

The first time I heard this song (that I remember) was in Will Ferrell's Harvard commencement speech, so now that's what I always connect it to. I really recommend watching that commencement speech!

Long haul trucker here, I went threw Kansas plenty of times. I don't think many groups had the name of a state as a band name so that's unique.

If I remember correctly, this song started as a warmup exercise for founder/guitarist Kerry Livgren (front left in the video). The vocals and violin just slay me. Can’t get enough.

This was released in 1977....and, obviously, is still being listened to and referred to today! It was poignant enough to be referenced in Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure when Ted is trying to converse with Socrates! Kansas is a fantastic group!

When Kerry the blonde guy on guitar wrote the words the guitar part was a finger exercise he used but when his wife heard it she said you need to put words to this!

Kansas is currently on their 50th Anniversary Tour and will be coming to Shreveport in October '24. I have tickets and look forward to the concert.

Back when they were touring this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CO (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 600 miles round trip with roughly $1.00 gas I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (former Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it. This is my favorite Kansas piece. I started losing family members with perfect regularity of one very couple months from my age five. Mortality was an accepted reality when this song first came out. Another favorite from them is "People of the South Wind". Wayward Son is their most famous but for me it's almost been played out. Good reaction.

Hello from Canada new subscriber here as someone who was a kid in the 80s had parents that grew up in the 60s 70s my parents had LP ' and 8 tracks of those classic artists including Kansas this song and Carry on my wayward son are two of my favorite Kansas songs there are so many messages you can take from this song the message I take from this song is that we all fade from peoples lives and they do not give us a second thought .

Funny story I had a friend in the Army, I was overseas, he was driving his car and I put this song on, and he loved it and wanted to listen to it again, he didn't listen to anything but rap music. It was classic. I didn't know what to think. The second request was priceless, so we listen to it again

This song always holds a special place in my heart because wayyyy back, my girlfriend (now wife of 21 years) first heard this song because of me, and learned to play it on her guitar - she'd play, I'd sing! I love this song but it gives me such terrible sad feelings since they played it for every beloved dead character montage on the tv show Highlander:the Series. I LOVED Highlander! And the song ................ every one...... Every dead friend.......... But it's been a long time since I've heard it all the way through so thank you!

Already mentioned, but good trivia: The guitarist was doing a finger picking exercise and his wife said that sounds great, you ought to write a song around it. So he did. Others in a similar vein: Sweet Child O'Mine opening riff was just Slash doing a skip string picking exercise, then Izzy the other guitarist said that sounds great and put chords around it. The opening riff to Thunder Struck by AC/DC was just Angus Young warming up. Made a song around it.

This song brought me to tears when it was playing on my cars radio as I was driving to the funeral of a friend from highschool back in the late 70's. You are gone, but never forgotten Mike Freitas.

Kansas' Steve Walsh, the singer then, was also in a band with Mike Slamer, the guitarist who did the solos on Warrant's first two albums. The band was STREETS - 1985 release "Crimes in Mind". You gotta listen to it over a few times to get a feel for it because ITS SO 80s! They sound like if Van Halen, Survivor, and Ratt and of course Kansas, were mixed together. Dont Look back, The nightmare begins, Broken glass, Crimes in mind and I cant wait, all good songs!

I want to emphasize the importance of comparing this song with “Dream On” and how Alexis describes them as, “The more life you live, the stronger this song is.” This resonates with my feelings about Pink Floyd’s song “Time.” I’ve checked your channel, and it seems you haven’t reacted to that one yet. I lived in Altimont outside of Orlando, but Tarpin Springs was my favorite place in Florida

A lot of bands back then used to name themselves after locations. You had Kansas, Boston, Chicago, L.A. Guns. (And in country, you had bands like Alabama and Oak Ridge Boys). There was even a band named America (who was British). And then you had a band named Berlin who weren't German, but Americans.

A rare song that will be relevant centuries from now because it is so poignant, true and timeless.

Another good song about getting older is by Tool. "Invincible". It's long, progressive but oh so relevant. So good.

If you like Kansas, You guys should try another lesser known group from the same era and area, "Shooting Star". They have a nice little catalog and really kind of like Kansas in a way never got their full due. I'd start with their best known song "Last Chance" studio version. If you want a little softer side "Hollywood" would be a good one. I guarantee you'll like them. Midwestern rock at it's best.

Funny you mention Aerosmith. Kansas opened for them at the Kansas State Fair and of course the crowd LOVED them So they played longer than they were suppose to and Steven Tyler got mad and pulled the plug on them

Great band. The singer/ keyboardist Steve Walsh is definitely underrated. His vocals are amazing and as far as his keyboard work, you need to listen to The Spider. It's an instrumental off of the same album as this song..Point Of No Return. Great reaction guys.

Aerosmith comment " Dream On " I saw them about '73 and yes still listen to it . Also saw Kansas , and all the Big Good Bands . Even Led Zeppelin - MY favorite .
