@@00Fiddlesticks00 Rollins, Jello Biafra, H.R, Ian MacKaye…I love them, but they’re all baby boomers. The oldest Gen X’ers were 13-14 when they hit the scene. I was born in 72, and have seen Black Flag, Minor Threat and Bad Brains numerous times in the mid-late 80s. I remember when Rollins went solo and tried spewing poetry for an entire show, or HR just wanted to be a reggae singer. But, still. They’re really from the late boomer hardcore scene of the late 1970s. Late boomers have hardcore, they have late 70s and 80s metal bands, punk. Gen X has late 80s and 90s hiphop and Grunge.

Incidentally, even much prefer Black Flag pre-Rollins, he did say the best quote I can remeber, "I saw no honesty in keep playing songs that made sense to me as a young guy". As in all those punk and metal bands out there making their 50th anniversary tour or whatever is plain pathetic.

This song actually got to number one in the UK music charts in 2009, a whole 17 years after it was first released! It was part of a grassroots protest against The X Factor, to keep the X Factor song from getting the prized Christmas number one position. I love how this piece relies on the buildup and release of tension, and how repetition is VITAL for the message. "They" just keep doing the same things over and over again, and "we" keep allowing it and following instructions over and over again. But the tension is constantly building up in the background -- at what point does it become too much? At what point does it explode? And after it does, will we go back to what was and simply repeat the whole process over again? Or if we do, does it still escalate a little more each cycle? This music is a brilliant demonstration of the cause and effect of social unrest leading up to a riot. Absolute masterpiece.

I believe the concept behind the lyrics for this one is that he wanted them to be few, simple, powerful and memorable...It's like a protest chant: he wanted to drill this in people's heads. He wanted it to be so intelligible and obvious that even people who hated music like this, people who always said "I can't understand the lyrics because of the screaming" would understand them. He is actually one of rock's greatest lyricists, if not one of the great poets of all time, and other songs are more extensive and more complex...

KKK burning crosses at night and then going to work forces, such as police, in the daytime. A great line about this song is, "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is NOT about Mom telling you to clean your bedroom. It is about dismantling the systems of oppression that these musicians lived in. Both Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha are mixed race with black and Latin blood. Tom is one of the greatest living guitarists but always gets overlooked because of what he stands for.

For some more context for your daughter - I was in Torrance Calif. visiting my gf when Los Angeles exploded into violence - a curfew was imposed so we got a hotel room & watched LA burn both on TV and from the window - the next day I went to drive north & was forced over on the Fwy by a column of marines in full battle gear heading up to stop the violence. Even when the rioting ended, there was an intense distrust of the LA police department and all justice. Rage tapped into that anger. Zack is saying: "Some of those who work (police) forces, are the same that burn crosses (are Ku Klux Klan)." The repetitive nature of the lyrics just pounded the message home and the shows were a catharsis of anger. I've met Tom a number of times and he's incredibly bright & knowledgeable - along with his completely novel approach to the guitar that mimics scratching records and other innovative sounds.

@@andrewchaffee3133I give him the credit for beeing very succesfull and creativ in using guitar effects and weird percussion effects but dude come on. He is a fantastic "Rythm player" and has a good ear for catchy riffs, but he also knows very well his limits. Thats not a bad thing and he found his own way to be on top with his bands. Thats inspiring for new players even that cant play anything on the guitar to find your own sweet spot. Adam Jones from TOOL also admits he has limits and would never master songs from John Petrucci or Steve Vai, because he simply can't. He found his own path and created masterpieces focusing more on song arrangement then beeing a guitar god. But come on dude please consider how many very VERY talented guitar players are around the world. Tom Morello is not even in my top 50 of greatest guitar players. Eruption by the way is not that hard to play... I heared the audioslave album and needed 5 minutes to play the solos, but for Dream Theater i need months...there is a BIG difference in skill. I even would put Wes Borland way over Tom in his era, because he created much more good riffs that really are remarkable.

Maybe because it came out 8 years before she was born and I don't think they play it a lot on country radio these days 🤣🤪. We actually discussed that in the video.

I think most people have mentioned this, but to me, it's the constant onslaught and oppressive nature of what we experience, being hammered by our 'betters' who tell us what to think, what to say, what to do and us being good drones expecting us to fall in line, turning a blind eye to what we would clearly think is wrong otherwise. Until it explodes in a blinding rage in which we lash out.

They have amazing lyrics and definitely future reactions should have lyrics, because they are very content heavy usually. This is one of their more plain anthem songs.

Very confused at the notion that RATM are only sort of angry.

Goes without saying... More Rage songs for Alexis, any other 97% of them with more than 4 bars. She's got a lot to unfold.

Gen xer here. Saw rage live 3 times. They didn’t up with authority. That struck a chord with many of us that were coming from boomer parents who told us we need to follow the status quo and fall in line. When Zack is saying “some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses”, he is saying that there are racist police out there. The original lyrics would change to “some of those that hood office.” The record label forced them to change it. Luckily, they went back to that in live shows, and actually got banned from some tv shows for doing this song when they were told not to.

There is a band named Brass Against (You may google it on YT :)). Years ago they covered (and nailed) this masterpiece, and many other, couple of days ago they released version of Sober by Tool. You probably like it (and subscribe :D).
