@preston9239

It should be noted that it's their own firmware built on top of OpenWRT, not vanilla OpenWRT. My only gripe with the GL.iNet is that they market it as "OpenWRT" instead of "Built on OpenWRT", which is a big difference. Looking at GL.iNet's security updates, we can see that they have introduced a number of vulnerabilities in the past in their own code that do not exist in vanilla OpenWRT. However, part of the reason this is such a strong product though is that if you want to be more security / privacy oriented with your device, you know for a fact the hardware is very compatible with vanilla OpenWRT and can upgrade from GL.iNet's firmware upgrade interface. This also makes the devices extremely reliable long term, and shows that this company's strength isn't really in their software, but rather their amazing hardware and its compatibility with FOSS projects. That is something that is truly unique and will continue to set this company apart from all of its competitors.

@@preston9239 Yes, I see a couple red flags with this company that makes me hesitate buying anything from them, one of which is what you mentioned above. I'm sticking to MikroTik for now, but if they prove themselves trustworthy, or another company comes in and offers hardware made to run OpenWRT, I might switch over to that for home use--I would have to be seriously convinced otherwise for commercial. For now, some MikroTik devices can run OpenWRT, but they really aren't built for that OS.

@@preston9239I personally owned a GL.iNet router for a while. It did DNS things we could not explain, and misbehaved in odd ways frequently. I bought it thinking I was getting OpenWRT, just like most of their customers. What I got was something I was unable to take full ownership of due to the modifications, and it actively caused issues with our internet. I absolutely would not recommend a GL.iNet device for anyone concerned with personal information securty or having full control of their equipment. I'm actively disappointed to see it so openly sponsored by this channel.

It’s awesome to see how far he’s come and how much he’s developed both his on camera comfort level and his knowledge over the years. Also thanks for the comments on Wireguard…it made me check it out. @@ianwakers The last thing a new company with limited resource wants to do is call out the competition.. This was a sponsored video. AKA commercial... When we got 2Gb Hybrid Fibre internet where I live, our ISP said they would provide us with an appropriate router, which I thought would save me having to spend a ton of money on a router. They provided me with one that had a single 2.5Gb port. So I bought one of these and connected the second port to a 5Gbe Network switch. These routers are absolutly fantastic. One thing I found with it that I wish Jake had covered was the WiFi range on it. I live in a brick-built house. I set the WiFi signal strength to "low" and I can still connect to our WiFi network from 60ft away, down the street. Never mind your ISP saying they guarentee coverage across your whole home using mesh pods they will provide. Just get one of these routers. I can't recommend these things ennough. They are worth the money and they are the simplest routers in the world to set up.

Jake forgot to mention that you can access the OpenWRT UI also, unlocking even more features.

Using Flint 1 since 2022 and never disappointed. Now looking for Flint 2 to see if it's worth to upgrade and found your review. I think I'll upgrade because my internet speed soon will pass 1 gbit and I'll add NAS server to my home newtork

So I can use this to trick Netflix to think everyone is at the same address with this?
@TheTruthDragonNJ09
@TheTruthDragonNJ09 Месяц назад
Not entirely. Netflix also looks at billing addresses and cross-checks it with the geolocation of the login.
@thedarofmar9518
@thedarofmar9518 Месяц назад
Wouldn't the geolocation be coming from the VPN on the router?

This router does not come with SQM built-in. The company has specified we would need to install it through Luci.

Would REALLY love to know if this router has any issues with buffer bloat or has good QoS/some magical, better evolution of the tech.

I have 3 pcs. It looks like I could connect all 3 and be happy. Might try hooking the tv to it. The vpn part sounds interesting too.

Just a handful of years ago I went out LOOKING for a router that would be good to flash OpenWRT on to use as a primary. Now they have ones commercially shipping with it pre-installed? I'm sure it's a slightly customized version, but still, I would have loved to have seen this in the line-up. As my current primary is going strong, I have no need to update currently. But when I do, I know where I'm looking first!

I preordered the flint 2 and I have had some issues with it. I wanted to use a flint to make a local Samba server for an in-house NAS, but it seems like the USB port might not supply enough power, which can cause issues with using this router failing to recognize external hard drives or ssd you connect to it, meaning you need external power. I also had issues with the firmware, it was a pain resetting the device because it kept on failing to reset or update the openwrt firmware. Other than that, its excellent, its good if you want to connect this router to a VPN (via wireguard or other sipported protocol) for specific iot devices that shouldnt be exposed over the network which is what I'm using this for.

Got one after watching this video (no to Cox's absurd $15/month rent). First 30 minutes a lot of frustration, could not even reset it. But now it works like a charm. Even got WireGuard set up (but for this I had to watch one of the GL.iNet's support videos). Still do not get what the AdGuard does, because it does not block RU-vid ads. Nevertheless, so far so good. And BTW, it is on sale right now.

Dang, if I had known about this a few months ago, I definitely wouldn't have spent the same amount of money for my TP-Link AXE5400. Two 2.5Gb WAN/LAN is a major selling point at this price range.

Just to note, it does have your typical parental controls without a subscription, but you can also turn on BARK for the extra stuff. Also, if you have less than a 1gig connection, the flint 1 is still an awesome router for around half the price
