Who underrates Mortensen? He is well known, and known to do his acting really well. If some movies are not in top-10 of hollywood showing list....well thats usually just a good sign.
I remember thinking that Tom locking the front door and forcing his brother to lower his weapon to look for his keys was so simple and yet realistic to disarm him. Most of the action in the movie is believable and realistic making all the more intense.
This was a great film, much better than i was expecting at the time... If you're a fan of movies like Taken, John Wick & Nobody then this film is for you. It follows a similar template, but delivers a far more grounded and realistic story and characters that are each consistently intriguing and captivating throughout. It's a shame this film was released prior to the rise in revenge movies as it missed the recognition it deserved... On the other hand however, I'm grateful they never ruined it by forcing it into a franchise, too
This was actually a really good film! The story was written, just right! I didn’t rush and do anything, it built up the characters and had the perfect plot twist. Whenever you thought you knew a character, the film would show you otherwise!
They didn't think he was weak. They recognized him from him disarming and killing two armed robbers singlehandedly. They wanted revenge for some unfinished business from back in the day.
The scene where toerag Bobby gives the finger to the two evil robbers in their pickup, right there you saw the Who Gives The Most Evil Stare food chain. RIP to William Hurt, who was rightly (and should've won) nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role. Ed Harris was also scary af in this as well.
Young bullies can still have some brains. He looked into those dead eyes and saw something he did not want to deal with. Wisdom overwhelmed his hormone-addled sense of immortality.
I don't know how I never saw this movie. It's definitely in my wheelhouse. I had forgotten Vigo and Ed Harris were both in the movie "Appaloosa". A great western btw.
One of my favorite Viggo roles of all time! Eastern Promises kept Viggo's role as an undercover agent hidden and we didn't see it coming. Also.....Viggo doing that knife fight fully nude was crazy.
@@rickbase833 You should read the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King, where the protagonist (the gunslinger) seems sort of obsessed with the idea of a man willing to fight naked must be a real bad ass. I wonder if SK inspired the Eastern Promises script. And I agree, it was a great movie!
This ritchie isn't a wimpy p**** who can't fight though. This guy is a mad dog bare handed killer or he could kill ya in a thousand improvised ways . Steven may not wanna find Ritchie
Love this movie. A good example why ego's can destroying organisation's. A smart leader never seeking for revenge, he's reflecting what happened and take action to avoid situations in the future.
@@ComedyBros5 I doubt he has any clue what he's saying. It WAS the last movie released on VHS. But many, many, many movies have been released on DVD since.
I can’t believe this is the first I’m hearing of it. I feel like Viggo’s whole career, aside from LoTR, is defined by incredible roles in awesome overlooked films. His movies never get good marketing.
6:00 Yea, that's it. Lets get dressed up, look like Mafia hit men, look out of place in this small town, try to walk in a diner in a small town where everyone knows each other, and then try to look inconspicuous. Okay, sounds like a good plan. What could go wrong?
Check out the way Viggo morphs back to "Joey" in the front yard. His walk changes, his face goes calm and cool and his eyes reveal his intensity. The guy is a remarkable actor. He is on my top list. Viggo, Denzell, Butler, Penn, Hardy and Statham.
This was an excellent movie! It's a good reminder that in most organized crime syndicates (throughout history), there is truth to the "blood in, blood out" way of thinking.

I met a couple of guys once like the two dudes who mean no good at the beginning of this movie. It was in South Park at a small cafe and they were especially friendly to me as I was by myself. When they asked me what I was up to, and I said I was headed to a shooting range, their demeanor changed and they weren't so interested in me. They made a good choice not to eff with me. These types are out there and real. So be careful when strangers are strangly nice to you.
@@dannysunay4386 as if a stranger you have struck up a conversation with should not be alarmed to find out your packin??? The guys a doofus and I think THEY made the right choice by distancing him.
'Finishes him off'...actually, they showed Leland with a hole in the side of his face, still alive struggling to breathe even though he had a hole in the side of his face
Realize that this is reality for a lot of people, therefore, people, protect your own 2nd Amendment rights. No excuse for leaving yourselves defenseless w the evil monsters that are out there.
Who woke up one day and thought “I know what people want. They want RU-vid channels that narrate over the top of cut up movies, such that it ruins any enjoyment anyone might derive from watching the movie.”
His hoodlum ride arrives to take him to meet his psycho brother, voice switching from mild mannered Hoosier back to Philly: "Yeah, I'm Joey". Absolutely brilliant acting and a great film.
I love this movie.. I've watched it multiple times and its been long enough, that its about time again. I think they did well with the pacing, 'real' vibe, and portraying the family interactions.
A good example of people who think they have power do not know when to just let an issue go. They think they are above the law, invincible and attack people who would do them no harm if left alone. It is sort of like poking a wolverine and getting mauled by it because they thought the wolverine was small and too weak to fight. Note to all gangs: It is not smart to go after your former hit man.
He was never really into acting as acting -- it's what he did to fund his other interests. He's a photographer, a painter, and a poet, and he's more into any of those things than acting. When he vanished from Hollywood, I assumed he had enough money to do what he wanted, and went off to do that.
The incongruity in this is Joey's treatment by his family when they realize who he is. A bit of an overreaction by the wife and son. That says more about them then it does about the repentant Joey.
Original release had a scene where the son said to Vigo's character, "what are you going to do dad, bump me off?". It was unintentionally hilarious. The scene was changed in the DVD release.
I remember this film when I was a kid. Brother and sister have a deformed child they keep locked in the basement. They run a bed & breakfast. I can still remember the end scene after the brother kills his sister, "Junior, it's a game!"
